02-APR-24đĄCOACH TIPS Arm Technique Dos and Donâts - Hands in line with shoulders #shortsFORM2024-03-14 | đĄCOACH TIPS Arm Technique Dos and Donâts - Hands in line with shoulders
The most effective âpullâ will follow the line of your shoulder with little deviation - this matters the most when your hand enters and you begin to anchor your hand in the water. Reaching forward in front of your shoulders, anchoring on the water and pulling through beneath your shoulder line will ensure that all of the force you exert onto the water will propel your body straight forward.
If you find yourself reaching across your body, then catching the water, your âpullâ will wiggle you from side to side as your hands cross your body over and over. This results in increased drag, decreasing how can you hard pull. This also can become an injury risk if you are swimming like this for a prolonged period of time - your smaller shoulder muscles wonât thank you for this.
Instead, as your hand enters the water, think about reaching your hand forward towards the end of the pool as your shoulder naturally rolls side to side. This will set up your stroke so that your hand is in the right position in relation to your shoulders and ensures that youâre using your biggest, strongest muscles to pull your way through the water.

#FORMgoggles #triathlontraining #howtoswimđĄCOACH TIPS Arm Technique Dos and Donâts - Finish past your hips #shortsFORM2024-03-14 | The finish of your stroke can really enhance, or be a detriment, to how well your overall stroke stays in sync - you can only create propulsion if your hand is still in the water. Keeping the length of your finish is important to maximize the power that you create đ
Your hand should accelerate past your hips to finish the stroke. Many of us rush this process resulting in little ability to increase our speed, which leads to a shorter stroke that uses more energy.
By staying patient and smoothly pulling through the water as you swim, youâll have room to accelerate through the finish, which will feel like youâre surging your body forward with each finish of the stroke.
This will not only increase the power you generate, but will connect the finish of one stroke into the catch of the next, allowing you to hold your speed better đ¨

#FORMgoggles #triathlontraining #howtoswimđĄCOACH TIPS Arm Technique Dos and Donâts - Pulling under your body #shortsFORM2024-03-14 | Picture this -
Youâre climbing up a ladder đŞ Youâd naturally put your hands on the rung of each step, closer to your body, to help pull your body up as you climb.
Now imagine trying to climb a ladder but your arms are a foot outside the edge of the ladder. Thatâs the difference between pulling under your body, and pulling outside of your body.
While youâre pulling, the trick is to keep your hands inside the width of your shoulders, through the pull. If your hands travel outside your shoulders, your arms re no longer in a good position to maximize the leverage you can create. Itâs like climbing a ladder with your hands far apart.
If your hands travel along the path directly beneath your shoulders, your arms and body will always be in the proper position in order to maximize the force that you can generate on the water. This allows you to hold on to more water and propel your body faster, while improving your overall performance.

#FORMgoggles #triathlontraining #howtoswimđĄCOACH TIPS Arm Technique Dos and Donâts - Open armpits #shortsFORM2024-03-14 | We all know the catch is a vital part of the arm stroke. Describing what makes a good catch usually becomes over-complicated, leading to frustration when youâre trying to improve.
Weâre here to simplify things -
The goal here is to place your hand in the water, anchor it in place, and then move your body past your hand to propel through the water.
Many of us tend to concentrate on what our hands are doing through the water - usually creating an âSâ with the pull or putting too much force into the moving hands. As soon as your elbow is by your side, âclosingâ your armpits, you end up using the smaller muscles in your hand/forearm to swim instead of your bigger arm/shoulder muscles.
By keeping your armpits open, you can ensure you are catching the water and using your biggest muscles to propel you forward. This results in more strength and stability to anchor your hand in the water, and propel your body forward with power using your biggest arm muscles đŞ

#FORMgoggles #triathlontraining #howtoswimđĄCOACH TIPS Arm Technique Dos and Donâts - Relaxed Recovery #shortsFORM2024-03-14 | R+R is often under appreciated - the same goes for your swim stroke - improving your recovery can be difficult to practice. As youâre not trying to create any power during this part of the stroke, your recovery must be relaxed and in rhythm with the rest of your swimming.
As a swimmer, you tend to exaggerate how much your air has to clear the water and end up recovering with stiff, straight arms. This results in losing energy when you should be relaxed. On the other hand, you could end up rushing your arms back to the water, which results in an out-of-sync stroke.
The đ here is to let your elbows lead the way during the recovery phase and keep your hands and forearms relaxed. This means your fingers will be closer to the water and your arm will stay in time with your opposite arm thatâs pulling, during your recovery phase.
For those of you who train at higher stroke rates, the centripetal force of your recovery may lead to a bigger stroke where the arms are straighter. The key distinction is that you do not force your arms straight, it should be the result of a relaxed recovery done at a higher rate. By keeping your hands and forearms relaxed, you can then put more of your energy into creating more propulsion once your hand is back in the water.

#FORMgoggles #triathlontraining #howtoswimđĄCOACH TIPS | Body Position Dos and Donâts - Head Pitch #shortsFORM2024-02-20 | âKEEP YOUR HEAD DOWNâ - a common coaching cue most swimmers have been given throughout their lives. Whilst the cue remains true, it doesnât paint the full picture of what you need to do with your head to maintain not just good head position, but proper body position as a whole.
Many swimmers often look up, towards the end of the pool. Since you are in the water, lifting your head up encourages the rest of your body to sink, creating a huge amount of drag. On the other hand, if you look too far down, youâll end up burying your head, which also creates a significant amount of drag by burying your body under the surface of the water.
The đ? A neutral head position that is relaxed and allows you to maintain good posture. Typically, the optimal head pitch will have you looking towards the bottom of the pool, but about 1-2 metres ahead of you (instead of straight down). This will help keep your head, hips and heels in line with the surface of the water, decreasing drag and improving your overall performance.
If youâre looking for the perfect tool to measure your head position - weâve got you covered. By using HeadCoach in your FORM goggles, you can now receive real-time feedback on your head pitch as you swim.

#howtoswim #freestyleswimming #swimtraining #triathlontrainingđĄCOACH TIPS | Body Position Dos and Donâts - Keep a stable head position #shortsFORM2024-02-20 | When swimming, your head leads the way. Keeping your head position stable is important to make sure your body stays streamlined and in the direction of where you want to go (hence the black line on the bottom of the pool weâve all got a love/hate relationship with).
For most swimmers, your head will rock from side to side with each stroke. When this happens, the power driven by the arms dictates how your head is moving, leading the rest of your body to âsnakeâ through the water instead of going in a straight line.
Your shoulders should feel like they can roll independently from your head.
Try this before you hit the pool next -
As you are sitting, imagine rolling your shoulders from side to side, while your head stays still - this is exactly how you should move through the water. By keeping your head still, the rest of your body will follow your head straight down to the other side of the pool, resulting in an improved body position and increased performance đ

#howtoswim #triathlontraining #freestyleswimming #swimtrainingđĄCOACH TIPS | Body Position Dos and Donâts - Maintain steady kicking #shortsFORM2024-02-20 | Keeping a good balance between how you use your arms and your legs will let you easily maintain a good body position. Doing so significantly decreases your drag, and avoids using additional energy to keep afloat.
When kicking wide, you might feel that youâre working too hard with your legs, creating excess drag that is too difficult to overcome.
On the other hand, by kicking too slowly, you wonât create enough force in the kick to ensure that your heels stay close to the surface - which is needed to reduce your drag.
Sound familiar? Weâve got a suggestion for you -
đ By keeping your kick small and steady, youâll minimize the energy you need to use to keep your head, hips and heels in line with the waterâs surface. This significantly decreases the drag you create and ensures that all the power you generate in the water goes towards faster swimming, not just staying afloat.

#howtoswim #freestyleswimming #swimtraining #triathlontrainingđĄCOACH TIPS | Breathing Dos and Donâts - Keep rhythm through breathing #shortsFORM2024-02-09 | When trying to maintain a consistent swimming rhythm, getting the perfect âbreathâ can be tricky.
Often, when you breathe, your whole body stops to take a breath, before continuing to swim after your face returns to the water. Frequently this is the result of holding your breath while you are swimming and trying to breathe out AND in when your head is turned to breathe. Itâs tough!
Weâre here to help -
đ Next time you hit the pool, blow bubbles into the water while youâre swimming so that when you turn your head to breathe, a sharp, short inhale is all that is needed. This saves time, ensures you get your full breath, and maintains your stroke rhythm đŤ§

#howtoswim #triathlontraining #freestyleswimming #swimtrainingđĄCOACH TIPS Breathing Dos and Donâts - Look to the side to breathe #shortsFORM2024-02-09 | Keeping a good posture when you swim can make all the difference to your swim performance, especially when it comes to breathing. Doing so ensures that you maintain good body alignment and less drag, allowing you to glide through the water (every swimmers dream!)
See below a couple of points to remember next time you head to the pool -
đ If you are looking backwards, or forwards, during your breath, you are no longer holding your posture, creating unnecessary drag and slowing down your pace.
đ If you focus on looking towards the side of the pool, instead of the end, behind or ahead of you, your head will stay in line with your body to maintain good posture during your breath. This automatically limits any unnecessary movement.
Limiting unnecessary movement = more streamlined swims đ

#howtoswim #triathlontraining #freestyleswimming #swimtrainingđĄCOACH TIPS Breathing Dos and Donâts - Turn your head to breathe #shortsFORM2024-02-09 | We all know itâs completely necessary to turn your head to breathe. What is often missed, is ensuring you minimize how much your head moves while youâre breathing. This minimizes drag and maintains the rhythm of your stroke - a win, win!
For many swimmers, itâs easy to turn a little too much, resulting in your whole face coming out of the water. Going this far to breathe isnât necessary and affects your stroke rhythm. Next time you hit the pool, think about this simple cue -
đ Try to keep one goggle in the water, and one out of the water while you breathe. This is a great visual cue that will help you to turn your head just enough to take a full breath, without any unnecessary movement when you turn.
Simple changes can often make all the difference to your overall stroke - give it a go! đ

#triathlontraining #howtoswim #freestyleswimmingđĄCOACH TIPS Breathing Dos and Donâts - Roll your body #shortsFORM2024-02-09 | Improving your breathing technique makes a massive difference in your performance. By moving your head up and down while you breathe, you end up creating more drag and using more energy leading to slower, fatigued swimming.
Donât fear - weâve got you covered. Simplify your breathing by following these simple steps -
đ Keep your head in sync with your shoulders to breathe. This keeps your breath more in sync with your stroke and will minimize any unnecessary head movement used to take a breath.
đ Imagine your body is connected on a skewer. As you turn the skewer, your head will turn to the side with your shoulders to take your breath.
By keeping your breath that simple, youâll decrease the drag you create and keep your breath in time with your stroke, resulting in easier, faster swimming đ
