Homemade 3D Printer - RepRap Prusa Mendel 2 Poppy Mosbacher 2015-06-01 | When I made this 3D printer, I didn’t like the shape of it with all the exposed wires. But once it starts working, it’s quite mesmerising. So I’ve made a short video to demonstrate how it makes objects with moving parts. I made it from a kit that cost less than £500. It's called a RepRap because it's self replicating, once you have one you can print all the custom parts and everything else is standard components. It's on long term loan at my local makerspace where members have used it to print their own 3D printers.Plastic filament is thread through the top of the printed and then heated so it melts. The plastic is made from cornstarch, and is Polylactic Acid or more commonly called PLA.This is filmed at the speed the machine is printing at, but the progress jumps because it takes 1hr 5mins to complete.
