Wick and Archer must find a way to save the land before the Scorch completely burns Aro. Positives This book ended the series in a satisfying way. It dealt with the major plot threads and gave resolution to problems and hope to the characters to move forward. The character struggles weren’t magically resolved, but they were explored, and the progression was clear even when a resolution wasn’t which I appreciated because real human struggles continue even while progression happens. The end made me smile. Archer made me laugh and smile. The characters are lovable and diverse, so they have good dynamics of challenging and helping one another. The friendship and brotherhood are strong and realistic. The book did dig down into deeper emotions. Negative: I never felt immersed in this story. The book does have descriptions but not enough to gain a full understanding of what everything looks like. Also, the plot moves fast. Some important parts felt too summarized, cut short, or speed up, and it left me wondering if I missed details or if I forgot because not much time was spent on those details. And the dialogue is rapid-fire and quick-witted enough so that it often felt like I missed something. I wish more time was spent in building the world and the thoughts and emotions in the characters. Peterson Genre: romcom Audience: Adult Audiobook narrated by Cindy Kay Summary: Maybell Sampson is a librarian in a small town. The budget for the library keeps shrinking, and her mother’s health bills keep coming, but she is handling it all because she has taken care of everything on her own her whole life. When May finds a football superstar sleeping in her library, though, a crazy downpour of events including a fake engagement with the football superstar lead her to wonder “how can this be my life” and how to handle it all. Audiobook: The narrator was perfect for the main female character (May) and added so much emotion to the story. Sometimes it was hard to tell the difference between other characters, especially males, and the main male character’s voice (Chris) was a bit cringy. Positives The book had everything people love about romcoms: humor, romance, supportive best friend, gorgeous and sweet love interest, relatable female main character, and all the drama and expected plot points. The situational humor was truly funny. The voice of May was so grumpy and sassy but realistic and caring that she is lovable and entertaining. Chris was not realistic, but he was downright adorable, so he was easy to root for. May had a real and relatable problem and flaw that she had to overcome. The romance never went too far (no spice). Negatives The book has cursing. Some crude humor and suggestive dialogue are in the book. When the book had about forty minutes left, the action and plot slowed down to the point that I lost interest. I can’t explain why the plot slowed down because of spoilers, but it didn’t have to be so drawn out to make the point. When she begins at the Academy, she meets someone who she believed was only in her head. The boy, Luca, shows her that the universe isn’t what Drammat paints it as, and when Aria begins investigating deeper, she discovers many horrible secrets. The book presents and supports a difficult yet important topic. The main character had a great balance of skills and flaws. She was able yet made relatable mistakes, and she thought through getting into a relationship, which made the romance emotional, thoughtful, and realistic. The book had suspense, action, a bit of mystery, friendship, and takes on several important issues. I really loved listening and didn’t want to stop. Kingdoms of Kartzel (Book Two) Summary: Everything in book two is more perilous, and the stakes are higher. This book hooks you with emotion, peril, mystery, danger, and a history altered by lies, secrets, and brainwashing. The emotion is intense. It’s described in a way that you feel with the characters, which makes the action more thrilling and anxiety-inducing. The action flies hard and fast. So many dangerous situations happen so rapidly that the book zips along. I did not want to stop reading. I needed to know what happened. The characters remained consistent in their personalities and flaws. I didn’t love everything about them, but those parts were realistic. The mystery around Aria and Luca's connection intrigued me in the first book, and more is revealed about it, but those revelations opened whole new worlds of questions. The side romance enhances the main plot. The underlying message is an important one. I need book three! The end was such a good cliffhanger. Urie, Sara Everest, Claire Kohler, & Lydia Mae Genre: steampunk mystery Audience: Young Adult + Summary: Seven contestants are invited to a game at Sky Manor. To win the game, a contestant must find and unlock the vault. Many keys are hidden throughout the manor, but only one unlocks the vault. Before the vault can be unlocked, one player must. Since all the players are connected, they all have reasons to take out the other competitors. Who will be the murderer? Who will die? Who will win? And who will realize life is more important than money? The narration was a bit robotic with the prose at times, but the narrator did great with giving each character a distinct voice. Positives The story is fun and unique. It feels like Clue mixed with a treasure hunt in a manor that has a mind of its own. The story has twists, surprises, layers, and characters who are all interwoven somehow. The many mysteries make it hard to stop reading. Every character had a motive and capacity to be the murderer, so it wasn’t obvious who would die or who committed the murder. I was able to figure out who did it, though, and I appreciated the clues. The characters all felt distinct and unique and all had an aspect of intrigue. The book showed that valuing life is more important than money. Maybe a negative: I did wish the characters were described more through the whole book. The house and rooms were described really well. (But I have trouble focusing on audiobooks, so I may have just missed the descriptions.) Positives The book had plenty of action and romance. It went back and forth in a good balance of the two. The message was clear and important. The story showed that no one is too deep in evil for God to save, love, or use for good. It showed that God can change us yet also showed that when we choose evil, we will have to live with the consequences. The narration was amazing. Every voice sounded unique and fit each character perfectly. It was so fun to listen to. I cared about the characters. They felt real and had relatable feelings and struggles. Negatives Quite a few details of the romance felt cliché. Especially in one section, the actions, events, and words were ones that occur frequently in movies and books. One section of the story felt long and unnecessary. After an important event, the people celebrated, and Aiden viewed and then participated in the celebrations, and it took a lot of time with little effect on the story. BOOK REVIEW: Beyond the Last Gate by S.C. Phillips HAPruitt Anelthalien 2025-07-17 | BOOK REVIEW: Beyond the Last Gate by S.C. Phillips Beyond the Last Gate (Lightseer Chronicles, volume one) by S.C. Phillips Genre: epic fantasy (adventure, desert world) Audience: middle grade (The writing felt middle grade, the characters were young adults, and the story was really enjoyable for me, an adult.) Summary: Isaac and Eva know that they have a unique ability to see light that no one else can see, but they don’t understand it. When they get a chance to go on an expedition to find artifera, objects that contain light only they can see, Isaac and Eva find ruins that want to trap them, a victim of a deadly plague, and many questions and mysteries about the light within the artifera. The twins are swept into a whirlwind of danger and unknowns in which they are the key to everything. Positives I loved this book. It was stuffed full of mystery around what the light is, what it can do, and how Isaac and Eva are connected to it. It seemed like each time I found out a little bit more, tons more questions open, and I had to keep reading. The plot was complex but easy to follow, and that reveal and pull deeper was magical. The world building was amazing. The world felt so vast, with history, depth, connections. It was fascinating and exciting to learn how it all connected, why it all mattered, and what it all meant. This book is just so cool!!!!! How did this author come up with this crazy awesome network of connections?! (Lots of clapping) The end was tragic and exciting. I need the next book! The characters were lovable. Isaac and Eva are twin brother and sister, and they have a fun dynamic. Isaac is spunky, carefree, and sarcastic. Eva is serious yet full of determination and childlike wonder. The side characters also developed into a full, rich people. All characters had clear flaws, and many had growth. The Expanse and all the weird phenomena that happen in it were so imaginative and thought out. The action was exciting. Certain parts of the book absolutely wrapped me up in the story. I can’t spoil it, but lots of clapping for the author for setting up such an experience at the one place and the other place at the end. The book had strong themes of loyalty, overcoming fear, friendship, doing what’s right instead of what is easy, and the power of pure human bonds. The cover is amazing. The descriptions made every person, scene, and move clear. This book was so immersive, I can’t get my head out of it. Negatives Much of the exposition and explanation was provided through prose, which did explain it well, but it wasn’t the most exciting way to do it. I wanted more dialogue for that and in general Some chunks of information were repeated. It was usually helpful, but the information reminder didn't need to repeat everything, and they often interrupted action. The syntax could have used more action verbs and less repetition to create more efficient, engaging language. Overall: This book is a must read. It is amazing. BOOK REVIEW: Unforseeable by Jeff T. Jones HAPruitt Anelthalien 2025-07-03 | BOOK REVIEW: Unforeseeable by Jeff T. Jones Genre: Speculative Christian fiction (time travel, aspects of The Screwtape Letters and A Christmas Carol, is political, novella) Audience: Adult (subject matter, vocabulary, and some cursing) My summary: Steven is given the opportunity to travel back in time and make changes to better the present. Steven takes the opportunity, and he believes his three choices in the past will better the modern world. When he returns to the present, though, Steven sees a different outcome than he expected. Positives The story has clear influence from The Screwtape Letters and A Christmas Carol yet uses those aspects in a unique way so the story feels like its own. The story Is political in a sense, but it focused more on the truth behind political topics and depoliticizing them to be what they are. The story brings social issues to a personal level to show that making these human choices into “social issues” dehumanizes them. The book upholds truly valuing human life rather than enabling people to do what feels good or makes them happy in the moment, which leads to a continual, futile search for satisfaction. Most of the arguments were solid, and the reasoning was well explained. The ideas, theology, and examples were sound and worked well to prove points. The Dolan character was well done. The plot itself was very intriguing. The main premise that you could travel back in time to make a better today is interesting, but watching it play out and seeing how Steven’s choices affected him was convicting and sad. I did cry. The idea of one mistake taking the life of someone you care about got me. The language was uniquely descriptive, and the style worked well for the story. Negatives The proofreading and editing could have been more polished. I did notice a few story inconsistencies, things that didn’t quite line up, and quite a few general tense and punctuation errors that pulled me out of the story. Some of the dialogue and character actions felt contrived or set up rather than natural. Those parts did make the message come through, but if more time was spent making the dialogue and responses natural, the impact could have been even deeper.
