Armed with their striking combination of found sounds, stringed and DIY electronic instruments, 'Rites For Crossing Water' is a bridge to something new for the duo.It follows their debut album, BRACE, which was greeted with a BBC Proms performance and an Ivors Composer Award nomination. The title track of the new EP has been featured as Tom Robinson’s Track Of The Week on BBC Radio 6 Music. Direct and catchy, the new songs are filled with folklore, old and new. Hawkins’ debut single ‘Christine’ is being released on 18th November via Accidental.Hailing from Rochester in the Medway area of Kent, Hawkins grew up watching local heroes such as Billy Childish and cites the area’s punk and 60’s garage revival as continuing influences alongside artists such as The Fall, Neu, Velvet Underground and Iggy Pop.This can be heard throughout the new single with its simple, uncompromising, infectious, fuzz-laden power chords, crunching drums and youthful energy underpinning his galvanic vocals: “I really love 8-bit metronomic beats with loose distorted riffs” explains Hawkins. “The synth sounds are processed guitar riffs using Ableton. Big fan of repetition and loops.”The song’s excited almost naïve energy is no accident. Hawkins built ‘Christine’ from the first guitar chords he learned, and the song has been adapted from one of the earliest he wrote with an old art school band. It captures the thrill of his initial wide-eyed musical experiments. He was careful to retain a live and spontaneous sound, recording the guitar solo in a single take.‘Christine’ serves as a musical and thematic introduction for the Sonic Hawkins project, in which art, pop culture and music feed into one another, influencing everything from the project’s name (inspired by a life-long fascination with Sonic The Hedgehog) to the track’s lyrics, inspired by Stephen King’s novel of the same name in which a young man’s car is possessed by supernatural forces.The artwork and the video were produced by Hawkins to match the mood of the song. Utilising collage, which he describes as “an important part of all my creative processes, using different elements and layering to create a finished song or image”, the visuals are bright, vibrant and impactful, akin to his Immaculate Confection exhibition recently featured at the Saatchi Gallery.‘Christine’ is the first in a string of singles due for release with a debut EP expected in 2021.
