Bandsplaining 2025-07-30 | After experiencing a demoralizing copyright claim earlier this year, I wanted to better-understand how YouTube's copyright system works, how it came to be, and why it's been getting worse for creators. By pure chance, major music channels like @RickBeato, @theneedledrop and @ProfessorofRock started discussing this same issue right after I had finished this script. I hope this history and personal narrative can add to the discussion, and perhaps add a modicum of pressure to record labels to start respecting fair use.

There’s a word uttered in music forums. A genre recommended only to the deepest, most cynical music nerds. A proverbial last stop for those who’ve already explored the far reaches of popular music and need something new to brag about: Library music.

Library music gets its name from the record labels, or “libraries” who licensed background music for TV and film – particularly, during the 60s-80s. It literally is commercial music, and yet it was often far more innovative than its mainstream counterparts. Stranger yet is how this sound has been passed along over the decades, reappearing in hip-hop, ambient music, vaporwave and— yes, Mac DeMarco.

China’s Punk Rock TV Show: A National Paradox

What New Music Genres Were Created in the 2010s?

Bandsplaining 2024-04-24 | Every decade has spawned new genres of music: Rock in the 50s, hip hop in the 80s, etc. So what about the most recent full decade: the 2010s? Has musical innovation slowed to the point where no significant new genres have emerged? Or was the decade, in fact, full of innovation; you just had to know where to look? Well if the length of this video is any indication, it turns out it's the latter. There were a TON of new genres, more than we could include even in a 1 hour+ video.

How West Africa Went Psychedelic

Malian and West African music has long been intriguing to western rock fans. In particular, the way the region adopted the electric guitar. Often being used to complement traditional rhythms and melodies, the outcome is fuzzy, groovy, psychedelic and brilliant.

Zani Diabate and the Super Djata Band has long been my favorite in this genre we could loosely define as "Bamana Psych Funk." Their story is part of unique trend of African history; when newly-independent governments were investing in bands, providing them with state-sponsored drum kits, guitar amps and PA systems. It's a fascinating chapter in history, and even more fascinating is the music it yielded.

The 2005 Radio Scandal Was a Glorious Mess

Bandsplaining 2023-06-18 | A little-remembered scandal back in '04-'05 gave a revealing and hilarious look into music industry corruption. Dozens of popular bands, from Pearl Jam to Norah Jones, relied on a playbook of unscrupulous tactics in order to get their songs played on the radio. "Gifted" playstations, six-figure payola schemes, hiring college kids to make phony song requests: These were among the tricks employed just to stay on the Billboard chart an extra week.

The 2005 radio payola scandal is a disturbing reminder how much the mainstream music market was, and continues to be, fixed. It's also, in retrospect, really, really entertaining.

The Japanese Doom Psych Band Who Hijacked an Airplane

Bandsplaining 2021-03-04 | Most people are introduced to Les Rallizes Dénudés as the band whose former bassist hijacked an airplane during Japan's late 60s/early 70s counterculture movement. But while this did indeed happen, it's hardly the most interesting thing about them. The Rallizes' blistering, feedback-laden "Wall of Sound" music is awe-inspiring and incredibly innovative. They played doomy shoegaze punk rock years before shoegaze, or punk rock were even a thing.
