Long time since anything was uploaded in this channel. Long time since I played, let alone record, anything related to retro gameplay. Things always get in the way, 2022 for some wasn't the best year.
There's a few dual screen videos in WIP form but, for the moment, another playthrough of this fan game, which reminds me why 2D sidescrollers can be so fun. In this run I use different characters for different stages, and try to finish the bosses using special moves.

This game is essentially a tribute to various action/adventure games from the 16-bit era in the form of a boss rush. It features more than 20+ different bosses, with the "battle plan" of each playthrough being totally random and different (except for the final boss, which is always a fight with Neff from Altered Beast).
22 classic characters, each with their own strenghts and weaknesses.
It's an incredibly fun and addictive game designed to be enjoyed in short bursts. Part of the fun is anticipating what boss the game is going to throw next (the selection and order is always random), a playthrough vid doesn't do it justice, it's just a sample. Initially I recorded hours of footage with different characters and bosses, but then decided to keep it simple and upload just a single playthrough.
Another thing to praise is the presentation and the amount of polish it has - the intro and VS screens, the ending, everything is 100% true to that late 80s/early 90s arcade feel. Everything, down to the selection of fonts, makes it obvious that a lot of thought and work went behind it.
The only thing missing are character specific endings, but I'm not a programmer, and I can only fathom the amount of extra work required for these things.
It's interesting that Eric Lecarde's default colour palette, shown here, is the "enhanced" version from Pyron's Colour hack for Castlevania: Bloodlines.
The video shows version 2.0.0

This is a Mega Drive game ported to the Amiga.
The Amiga can be played only with music or sound effects, but in the video both are shown (gameplay recorded with effects only, and the music added in the editing). It has no sound in the intro, the level intros, the stage clear, the ending.

Of all games based on Stallone flicks, this might be one of the best. Even though one can draw comparisons to Judge Dredd, another sidescroller based on a 90s sci-fi movie starring Sylvester Stallone, Demolition Man actually is more similar to the original Terminator for the Mega Drive.
The two versions play pretty much the same, some levels have minor differences in the graphics or the layout, the top down levels (2 and 6) are easier on SNES. The MD lacks the ending screen of Spartan running away from the explosion.
We've reached the stage where every MD and SN playthrough, and every MD & SN side by side video or comparison, has already been done.

Aesthetically, one of the best games of the 16-bit era. The gameplay needs a bit getting used to - you hold FIRE and then hit a direction to attack - but the visuals and the music are among the best in action platformers from the early/mid 90s.
This was Thalion's last action game.
An Amiga exclusive, it was never ported to 16-bit consoles.

There must be a thousand playthrough videos of this game, here's another one. This is the slower, PAL, 50 Hz version, because this is what we were playing in Europe and UK.
The NES game is much more celebrated, but the Sega version is still one of the most well-liked retro Bat games. Originally made in 1990, in Europe it came out in 1992 to coincide with the release of the second Batman film (and game).
Short and easy, it somehow gives the feeling of playing the movie, with nice pixelart versions of the film's sets and characters, and some of the best music to ever come out of the Mega Drive.

NOTE: The game has about 12 minutes of FMV footage from the movie - originally the video was uploaded with the cutscenes untouched, but in smaller windows, but it was blocked for copyright reasons. It was uploaded again with the scenes mirrored, blocked again.
The video could not be uploaded in its original form. Instead of removing the clips, some editing was done. TV/VHS filters were added to the footage, and most of it was replaced with panels from the comic adaptation. The duration and the audio of the newly edited "cutscenes" is exactly the same with the original FMVs.
Most original FMVs (e.g. the intro, the long cutscene after stage one, the ending) are pretty much the same with the Sega CD, only in better quality.
The game also has some brief pre-rendered cutscenes - as these are obviously not from the movie, they are untouched.
Anyway, this game is like a mid-90s, FMV version of older mediocre movie-based games on the Amiga: a mix of different genres, not being particularly good in any of them. A basic shooting gallery, some fight scenes which play counter-intuitive for anyone who has played proper fighting games, an obligatory car level, and some very basic Doom-like first person levels which take too long to complete, lack any checkpoints and, compared to the earliest version of Doom from 1993, play and look like a slow pixelated mess.

* The ACD32 and A1200 versions are exactly the same, except for the CD music.
* The Amiga version is missing two boss fights (boss 2 and the second form of the final boss) and level 6.
* Gameplay-wise, the Amiga version is generally slower and fairly easier. The player can spam bombs (there's some delay in the Sega version), which makes some areas easier to clear.

This isn't a reupload of my older SNES longplay (youtu.be/OMhZyg2A514), but a newer, a bit tighter this time I hope, playthrough, in better video quality. I thought the intro should also be included, I think it makes sense for playthroughs of a movie-based game to include a short clip from the film.
Even though this film was never thought of as a "proper" Dredd movie, more like a Stallone action/sci-fi vehicle with the name Judge Dredd slapped on it, see this great analysis about the ways this film was actually influnced from 2000 AD.

A full singe-player playthrough of version 4.7 with Batman.
This is still a Work in Progress game
A lot of Batman's gameplay is based on Batman Returns for SNES (in earlier versions, the sprite itself was a modified BR one), with some Death and Return of Superman. Even though this is a MK fan-game and Batman is just a "guest" character, his gameplay is so good it makes it my favourite 2D fan-game with Batman, and it could be the basis for a Batman-themed OpenBOR mod. Some urban levels in the game, downtown and dark alleys, could very well be Gotham City.
What this version is missing is the Batmobile fatality from the previous one I've played (Version 3.0)
This mod, alongside Avengers: United Battle Force, is one of the best OpenBOR mods IMO, it's obvious a lot of work went into it, and is very fun to play.
The characters have a plethora of moves, playing with each one feels different, as a 2D brawler, MK The Chosen One is among the very best.
There's quite a few mods with very good visuals, but gameplay which is rather wanting, Avengers and MK: The Chosen One are almost perfect as they are and what they really need is a proper "final level" and ending sequence.

Thunder Force III was originally developed for the Mega Drive, and this is really the definitive version - the AC plays exactly like the MD and it's a matter of preference whether one enjoys levels 4 and 5 from the MD or the Arcade, while the SNES version is good port.

Like Shadow of the Beast, Leander is a Psygnosis game for the Amiga ported to the Mega Drive by Electronic Arts. The Amiga version is the definitive, even with its one obvious limitation: the game can be played either with music or sound effects, but not both (this is briefly shown in levels 1-1 and 1-3, but for the rest of the video the Amiga is shown with both music and sound effects).
One glaring omission in the MD version is level 3-7.
This was the first game by Traveller's Tales - their 16-bit games had a distinct, and very pretty, visual flair (see Puggsy, Mickey Mania, Toy Story - even Bram Stoker's Dracula has nice visuals) and hard, hard gameplay. Seeing this running on a real Amiga in 1991 must have been something.
Note: Even though the European Mega Drive logo is used in the background of these videos, the version shown is always the 60 Hz/60 fps (unless stated otherwise in the video title or description). The reason is that I just love the European MD logo, it's the one I grew up with.

The gameplay differences between the two versions in brief:
* Game Gear has a health bar while in Master System getting hit costs a life.
* When you lose a life in GG you restart the stage, in SMS you resurrect at the exact same spot.
* In GG the player can choose between three different types of Batarangs (heavy damage/ short range, medium damage/ medium range, weak damage/ long range) while in SMS the Batarang upgrades with pick-ups, until you lose a life where it reverts to default.
* GG has a special Batmobile or Batmissile attack, absent from SMS.
* Both versions have a Route 1 and Route 2 for every level. In SMS Route 2 has much more challenging platforming sections while in GG it isn't really harder than Route 1, just different.

Batman Returns on the Amiga isn't... very good. In fact, the game was universally panned upon release, and with good reason (see the reviews in Amiga Magazine Rack http://amr.abime.net/amr_search.php?search=batman+returns&mag_id=0&action=Find ).
Even if one gets past the tiny, badly animated character sprites, the gameplay is awful, the controls and collision don't work as they should, some sections which require precision platform jumping (like Level 3, the Rooftops) are the absolute worst. This game plays like it hates the player.
That said, as a fan of the film, I quite like the presentation, the music, some background graphics, it follows the movie pretty closely. Why did the gameplay have to be so bad.

The PC port of the original PlayStation game is pretty much the same except the higher resolution and the placement of some pick ups.
Played on Windows 7 using Daemon Tools to mount the ISO, the game plays fine but I couldn't get the CD redbook audio to work, so the in-game music was added in the editing process.
The video is 4:3 because it's the original aspect of the game, and I want to avoid stretching.
I keep uploading on 720 because I still work with a decade old PC - an i3 540 from 2011. Rendering one hour of footage on 1080 takes days (1440/2160 shouldn't even be mentioned). I hope it's still good enough for this sort of retro.

NOTES:
Level 4 of the Skystriker mission seems to have some kind of "glitch", if you are quick to eliminate the first enemy bomber, it ends prematurely.
Level 7 was edited because it would be too time consuming - originally, each torpedo takes 7 bombs to kill (and it takes just one to sink the U.S.S. Flagg, so the player can't ignore them), and the Destroyer itself takes forever, so this means it would be constantly going back and forth between bombing and refilling. It was changed so each Torpedo needs just one bomb, and the Destroyer's health was reduced from 1000 to 500 (same as the Frigate).
The Pit stages were edited too as they're just too hard and require a lot of patience to complete - losing a life means going back to the beginning, and enemy soldiers are very aggressive and take a lot of hits.
Changes:
In stage 1 the health of the Lieutenant was reduced from 300 to 150
In stage 2 (elevator) most enemies were reduced so they need 2-3 hits to kill.
In stage 3 Hawk and Gung Ho were reduced by half (from 400 to 200)

Batman: Return of the Joker | NES, Mega Drive/Genesis & SNES | Comparison - Triple Longplay
Haven't uploaded anything for quite a while due to a variety of reasons out of my control, reasons that have nothing to do with youtube or this channel. Sometimes you just have to leave some things aside.
June 23th of this year marked the 30th anniversary of one of my favourite movies, 1989's BATMAN, so I decided to revisit some games related to this classic.
Return of the Joker is not directly related to the film, but it was released in the interval between the two Tim Burton movies (it came out in late 1991 - Batman Returns was released in June 1992) and some elements (like the first stage, or the stage clear screens and the ending featuring the Batwing) make it seem like it was intended to be seen as an unofficial "sequel" of sorts.
Needless to say, the NES version is the original, the best, and the definitive one. Some impressive parallax scrolling one didn't see often in 8-bit consoles and, like all the Sunsoft games based on the 1989 movie, an excellent soundtrack. The MD version is like a watered down version of the NES original, while the (unreleased) SNES port is something else entirely (the rotating background in the tunnel stages is still really nice). There's also a totally different version for Game Boy, which is really good.
Anyway, I hope some of you find this video to your liking.

Batman 1989 The Video Game - NES | Original and "Dark Knight" Hack | Comparison - Dual Longplay
A pretty good hack, and an excuse to do a dual screen video of Sunsoft's Batman for the NES. This hack changes the colour palette, alters some cutscenes, changes the stage maps to make them less hard (though some areas become a little trickier), while the bosses become much easier as they take a lot less to kill.

Ecco remains one of the most visually brilliant and atmospheric games from the 16-bit era. Both the graphics and the evocative soundtrack hold up really well IMO. This is a recording with the slightly slower PAL setting (50 Hz/50 fps as opposed to the NTSC 60 fps most are used to playing/watching) which is closer to what us kids from Europe and UK had in the 90s. Nostalgia reasons. As is this entire channel anyway...

Note: The level numbers follow the Amiga and SNES versions - in the Sega versions different sections of the same level are given separate numbers
The level structure/layout differs between versions. Level 1 (Wolfship) is the same in all, Level 2 (Jungle) is the same in Amiga, MD, SNES, and from Level 3 onward the MD follows the Amiga while the SNES is the same with the SCD.
Opinions differ as to which version is the "definitive". Some say the Amiga because it was originally developed for the computer, others say the Sega CD because of the CD-quality music and longer levels, while others prefer the SNES because the weapons are noticeably more powerful, making the game easier.
I know this turned out absurdly long - a standard playthrough is at around 40 min, and the video is almost as long as The Company of Wolves - but I intended for it to include the different level layouts.
Like other vids of this type, it's not intended to be watched in its entirety, use the timecodes to skip to different levels. I'm aware that this type of video is not for everyone and I merely edit them for my own nostalgia trip, just... don't hit that dislike button! :D

Even though nowadays the original Arcade version is widely available, the Sega CD remains a great port, and the combination of the improved colors by Pyron and the fantastic CD soundtrack make it worth playing.
I burned the patched ISO on a CD-R and tested it myself on my PAL European Mega CD II (using the DATEL CDX converter as it's the Japanese version) and it works great.
