EVO 2015, 801 Strider, one of the top Abel players in the world, was set to play a pools match against a player named Skullzer.
Up against a literal child, Strider was the clear favorite, but that didn’t mean he was going to go easy on him. Ruthlessly following the Abel flowchart, Mike Ross and Gootecks could only watch in horror as 801 Strider earned a quick 2-0, which included 3 perfect rounds.
To add insult to injury, he leaned into the boos from the crowd and popped off as well.
But that’s not the end of the story. A year later, the two met once again at EVO 2016 to face off in a grudge match. While 801 Strider ended up winning 2-0 once again, it was much closer this time, and although the two have yet to face off again, we’re sure that Skullzer is out there training, waiting for the perfect moment to get his revenge.

So far Zero has made 5 appearances in Capcom Versus fighters
- SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos
- Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars
- Marvel vs. Capcom 3
- Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3
- Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite
In all 5 games, not only is Zero a top tier, but he is arguably the best character in every single one. Apart from having access to insane combos like lighting loops in every Marvel vs Capcom appearance, or a infinites and touch-of-death combos in SVC Chaos, Zero is typically one of the most flexible characters in these games and synergizes with pretty much everyone.
Whether it’s powerful BnB combos, access to incredible mixups, or just amazing buttons in general, if you want it, Zero will definitely have it.
So the next time you launch a fighting game and see Zero on the roster, you should probably go ahead and pick him.

This game is a regular feature on Sajam’s “Will it Kill?” series, and Kyanta is a game that can be best described as wacky and insane. It features a roster of whacky characters, like Investigator Azuma and his powerful gun and Kinoko’s RNG rocks. Not to mention the flash-inspired art style that makes the whole thing feel like a browser game from 2005.
But the game is far from simple. Kyanta features systems like CvS 2’s Ratio System and Groove system. There’s also the Boko bar, which combines the guard bar and stun bar, and an infinite input buffer. All that is to say that Kyanta is an incredibly fleshed-out game with fast-paced gameplay that is both simple to pick up while offering enough depth for players who want to take it seriously.
Plus, it’s got rollback netcode?
If any of that interests you and you want to try out one of the coolest fighting games out there go get the game on Steam for free and try it out for yourself!

At Pound 4, Armada lost to SilentSpectre, marking his first and only in-tournament loss to a Captain Falcon player ever. For years, this victory was a point of pride for the North American Melee community.
But it likely didn’t actually count.
On May 17, 2019, gamerjim on Twitter reposted VODs of the set, commenting that some of the interactions seemed… off. Hits didn’t seem to send as far as they should have, and throws weren’t behaving as expected. After Smashers went in and recreated some interactions from the match in their own games, it became apparent that the knockback ratio was likely set to 0.9 or possibly even lower.
So how did it happen?
Well, back before emulation and 20XX, every time you booted up Melee on console you’d have to go in and adjust the settings manually. When doing it quickly, it’s likely that whoever turned on the GameCube accidentally pressed the stick a bit to the left when scrolling down, changing the knockback ratio.

In Tatsunoko vs Capcom: Ultimate All Stars, the key mechanic that defined the game was Baroque.
Baroque is a mechanic that allows you to cancel your attacks at the cost of whatever red health your character had. After becoming a glowing rainbow, the rest of your combo will do extra damage based on how much red health you had, and you gain an extra jump and air dash.
By being tied to your red health, Baroque was a really interesting mechanic you could use as an all-in comeback mechanic, you could use slivers of red health to ensure your attacks were safe on block, pull off mixups, or even hit some nasty unblockables.
With its versatility and other mechanics in the game like Mega Crash, the game’s version of Burst meant to counter Baroque, Tatsunoko vs Campcom had tons of ways to approach and mixup your opponent, and it remains one of the most underappreciated crossover fighters in Capcom’s library of games.

Across the board, everything was toned down: Character movesets, movement options, combos, you name it, and it was probably toned down. Along with new mechanics like Wall Breaks to limit the maximum damage of combos and force resets, Strive just feels much more simplified across the board.
Freaking sell-outs.
Although long-time Guilty Gear players may not enjoy all of the changes that ArcSys made to Strive, there’s no denying that it made the series easier for new players to get into while remaining a fun fighting game with one of the coolest rosters out there.

Although we can give it to Guilty Gear Isuka due to the game being literally terrible, the real answer is Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R.
And it’s not just because it’s hard to say.
Now, it goes without saying that most Guilty Gear games are difficult to get into. But Plus R sets itself apart due to its incredibly complex systems, long drawn-out combos, and incredibly tight execution windows with no input buffer.
On top of this, mechanics like Force Roman Cancels and Slashback have ridiculously strict windows, and when you first try out the game you’ll definitely feel overwhelmed by how much there is to learn for each character. But if you stick with it and take the time to learn the game, you’ll find that Plus R will be one of the most satisfying fighting games you’ll ever play.

Taj is a Melee legend. Hailing from Arizona, the undisputed best MewTwo player in the late ots and early 2010s has quite the resume. He has wins over top players like Forward, ChuDat, King, and many others. He and Forward were the first players in history to beat the legendary team of Ken and Isai. At FCD 2007, he took 13 stocks off the Midwest crew by himself. And his Shadowclaw combo videos are some of the swaggiest montages from that era.
So, when the MBR released its 2008 tier list, it had two separate spots for Mewtwo. Regular old low-tier MewTwo at #24 with a rating of 1.8, and Taj’s Mewtwo, who was placed in the high tier with a rating of 7.8.
When this post went up, many on Smashboards simply accepted that “yeah, that checks out”. Taj had such a legendary status in the community that it kind of made sense to separate his MewTwo from everyone else’s.
It took almost half a year before the inside joke was revealed. Taj’s tag on Smashboards was Taj278. As in Taj Mew 2 - 7.8.

For the past 6 years, Armada has had one of the most dominant streaks in competitive Melee history. From 2012-2018, only 6 players were able to take sets off of the Swedish Peach and Fox main.
Mang0, Hungrybox, PPMD, Mew2King, Leffen, and Plup - 4 of them “gods of melee” and the latter two vying for 6th and 7th respectively. No one outside of this upper echelon could even touch him.
That is, until this pools match.
As if by some irony, the first player not in the top 10 to take a game off of Armada was a player named Swedish Delight, a tag inspired by the very player he defeated.
Shortly after this loss, Armada would announce his retirement from competitive Melee, ending his career with just one blemish on an otherwise sterling record.

Apart from Evo titles and a trophy case full of hardware, one thing that doesn’t get talked about enough is Daigo’s impeccable record in FT10 sets. Among those he’s demolished are prime Tokido and Infiltration, and if one thing is clear, it’s that when given time to prepare for just one player, Daigo will not lose.
One of his biggest wins in this format came in 2013 against Xian. Fresh off an EVO title, Xian faced off against The Beast in a FT10 set during Mad Catz Unveiled at Pax Prime and while things looked even at the start, Daigo quickly took over.
While Xian had his moments here and there, the set was completely dominated by Daigo, who patiently and methodically picked Xian apart, cruising to a 10-0 victory.

Riot Games has given the game incredible dev support, art direction, and unique characters. But what if this game had a spinoff? A card game with smooth animations, the ability to play your favorite champions, and even more lore to support League’s Runeterra world.
Well, that game is real. That game is Legends of Runeterra. And that game failed.

EVO 2002, in a USA vs Japan 5vs5 match, Justin Wong went up against Tokido, who was making his American debut at this tournament. The set starts off as most typical third strike sets as both players build meter. Eventually, with meter mostly built up Tokido would being fishing for shoulder tackles before landing one on a blocking Justin Wong in order to begin his offense and show fans in attendance something they’ve never seen before.
As James Chen would explain years later on his stream, what fans thought was Justin simply not blocking the second Aegis reflector, was actually an unblockable setup on the second due to how the move is supposed to be blocked.
After watching Justin get demolished in the first round, it became clear to fans that Justin’s defensive playstyle wasn’t going to cut and that Justin had to prevent Tokido from building meter again but it was too late as Tokido would go on to destroy Justin again in the second round to take the game.
While Justin wasn’t yet a master of Third Strike at that time, it was still an insane performance from Tokido who capped off his first visit to the States by winning CVS2 as well, no wonder he’s one of the gods fighting games.

- Pressing b with clone out toggles it between offensive and passive states
- If your boulder is already on field neutral b becomes a command grab on the ground
- Holding A during nair will cause orcane to bounce off the ground extending the attack.
- Orcanes forward air actually has a strong hitbox on the back which scales with speed
- Zetterburn can cancel out of his down b with air dodge to keep opponents guessing
- Kragg can cancel out of his side b to get an incredible horizontal boost
- Wrastor back throw at the ledge will throw the opponent off-stage, Maypul’s downthrow also does this.
- Maypul can stick to walls
- Fleet can get a boost from her tornado by floating through it
- Ranno can super jump by jumping out of crouch.

August 16, 2008, at Super Battle Opera 6, one of the biggest Third Strike team tournaments in the world, Ino Japan, a team consisting of Kuroda, Inoue, and EVO 2024 champion MOV faces off against Betrayal Star, consisting of Saru, Chinta, and K in the grand finals. Despite having one of the best Third Strike players of all time in MOV, Ino Japan would enter with a disadvantage as MOV was competing with an injured hand, causing him to play with only two fingers.
After trading games back and forth, MOV ended up the team’s final player facing down Chinta’s Ken and Saru’s Yun. With his team’s championship dreams resting on his shoulder, MOV would have to pull off a performance of a lifetime to bring the setback for his team ,and considering his injury, things were looking grim.
Luckily MOV is one of the greatest for a reason.
In his match against Chinta, MOV’s Chun still looked as clean as you would expect and apart from some pain between rounds you would’ve never been able to tell anything had happened to him at all on his way to a quick win. Then in the championship-deciding game against Saru, it was more of the same as MOV put on a clinic, taking 2 quick rounds and the entire tournament.

Ranno’s up-special is usually used as a recovery tool, but it can be canceled in two different ways that make it much more versatile. The first is by pressing down B during his upward trajectory. This will cause him to make a sharp 90-degree turn, and come down towards the stage, hitting the ground with a bang and damaging anyone caught in the shockwave.
You can also input an aerial while he’s going up, causing Ranno to turn into a ball of death, shooting poison darts that add poison stacks to enemies hit by them.
These can be used to mix up recovery, or offensively to reposition and catch your opponent by surprise.

Along with EVO, CEO is widely considered one of the biggest fighting game tournaments of the year but it stands out from other tournaments in a big way.
For top 8, players compete in a wrestling ring and they get a chance to enter the ring for the first time with a special entrance.
While we’ve seen some absolute bangers throughout the tournament’s long history, our money for the best entrance of all time has to go to K-Brad’s Stone Cold Steve Austin entrance at CEO 2015.
Channeling the energy of the Texas Rattlesnake, K-Brad walked into the ring with all the swag in the world and gave fans an entrance that would even make WWE hall of famer proud.
To cap off his sick entrance, K-Brad finished it off in the only reasonable fashion, by delivering a picture perfect stunner.

Clark Douglas "ClakeyD" Smith is a former League pro who eventually became an observer for the LCS and is now a Broadcast Director at Riot Games. But before all of that, he was a pro-fighting game player.
Back then, he competed in games like Street Fighter x Tekken and Super Street Fighter 4 but you’ll probably know him best for a particular set against Tokido. At SoCal Regionals 2010, ClakeyD took on Tokido’s Akuma in the losers just outside the Top 8. After trading the first 2 rounds, game 3 was all Tokido who finished things off this iconic raging demon that will go down in history.

For haters of the drive system, they might say Street Fighter 6 rewards playing like a bozo, others might say Street Fighter 5 due to its generous buffer window and straightforward combos.
But for us, the easiest Street Fighter game is probably Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo.
Now before you get upset, hear us out. Super Turbo is a very simple game compared to modern Street Fighter titles and within a few minutes, most experienced fighting game players should be able to learn a basic game plan with their character and be ready to take it online against players.
Along with that, there’s some pretty cheap stuff in the game that you can pick up with enough practice to feel like a super turbo veteran without actually investing that much time into it.
With many different ways to try out the game and to play others from Fightcade to the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection, everyone should give Super Turbo a shot to appreciate where the franchise came from and hopefully, you will never feel helpless.
#streetfighter #gaming #fightinggames
Some might argue the original Street Fighter due to its clunky controls and lack of input buffer. Others might say titles like Third Strike for its parrying or even Alpha 3 due to the precision needed for v-ism combos and infinites.
These are all great answers, the game that we think takes the title is Street Fighter 4. In a game awash with 1-frame links, advanced tech like meterless Focus Attack Dash Cancels, super jump cancels, and other character specific moves, Street Fighter 4 really lived up to the stereotype of fighting games being the hardest genre to master.

In fighting games, a DP - or Dragon Punch - is typically a rising uppercut often used by Shotos. Many DPs have invulnerable frames - or I-frames - on startup and are often used as an anti-air or wakeup “get off me” move.
The term originates from the aforementioned shoryuken, performed by Street Fighter’s Ken and Ryu, and the z-shaped joystick input of forward, down, down-forward, is referred to as a “DP motion”.
Other great examples of DPs in fighting games are Sol Badguy’s Volcanic Viper and Darius’ Grievous Wheel in 2XKO.
#fightinggames
There are three types of grabs in Rivals 2 - standing grab, dash grab, and pivot grab, which respectively have longer range but more endlag.
Attacks have priority over grabs, and if two players grab at the same time it will result in a grab release. You can perform a standing grab while dashing by inputting a jump and grab in quick succession. This is called a JC grab and is generally safer in case you whiff.
When a player gets a grab, they can throw, pummel, or special pummel. If they throw, their opponent will be immune to re-grabs until they get hit or touch the ground. If they pummel, this re-grab immunity will be lost, allowing them to be potentially chain-grabbed. If they special pummel, they’ll perform a move unique to each character.
If you’re the one getting grabbed, you can guess which pummel they’ll choose and press the same button to immediately break out of the grab. This is important against characters like Zetterburn, whose special pummel will set you on fire and can power up his throw into a kill shot.
Some characters like Loxodont have a command grab, a special move that lets you get a grab after a dash animation or in the air and can’t be broken out of.
#fightinggames #rivalsofaether #rivals2
When Kragg’s pillar gets destroyed, anyone standing on top of it will be put into a special fall. So, if your opponent lands on it while recovering, you can Up B to destroy the pillar and they’ll fall helplessly to their death unless they perform a wall jump. Even better, if you already have a pillar off stage a well-placed back throw can net a surprise kill as well.
Another tricky setup is to pillar if your opponent and rock both line up underneath you. Most good opponents will be able to react to getting scooped up by your pillar, but few will react to the shattered rock projectile, preventing them from getting a move out, and giving you time to line up a filthy smash attack.
Kragg's side special is a great mix-up tool to recover with as it gives you super armor, and it can also be canceled during its start-up animation. Just press air dodge at the start of the move and Kragg will pop up in the air, essentially giving him a bonus jump, but be careful as you can’t pillar after doing this.

Essentially, your normals combo into each other in ascending order from Light to Medium to Heavy. This basic framework applies to all characters and acts as a foundation to l.
Other games that use systems similar to the magic series include Guilty Gear Strive, which calls it gatling, and 2XKO, where every character’s light pulse fuse combo utilizes the magic series as its most basic combo. Magic Series may also be generally referred to as a target combo or string, but they all refer to basically the same thing
This is also the case for 2XKO
Magic Series is an important concept for fighting game players to understand and a starting point for making your own flashy custom combos.

Oki is short for the Japanese slang term Okizeme (起き攻め). Oki, short for Okiru (起きる), means “to get up” and zeme, short for Semeru (攻める), means “to strike or attack”, translating literally into “get up attack” or “get up offense”.
In fighting games, when a player gets knocked down, there is a brief moment where neither player can hit the other. Okizeme refers to this brief lull in battle where the attacking player is deciding what to do once their opponent finishes their getup animation. Will they throw out a hit? A grab? Some other mixup? Oki is the attacker trying to guess the correct option to continue their offensive pressure.
The flipside of the Okizeme coin is called “wakeup”, which refers to the defender waking up from being knocked down. Will they attack? Or block? Or some other mixup? Oki and wakeup are like yin and yang, and this guessing game with your opponent after a knockdown is one of the fundamental mindgames fighting games.
So, next time you hear a commentator ask what the Oki is going to be, you’ll know what it means!

Despite selling more than 2 million copies with Soul Calibur 6, Bandai Namco is in trouble. Key executives are leaving the company and many fans wonder what the future holds for the Soul Calibur series.
Recently, on the 6th anniversary of Soulcalibur 6’s release, game director, Yoshinori Takahashi, tweeted a sketch of Xianghua with the ever famous question “Our souls are still burning, right?”
This was followed up with a response from former series producer Motohiro Okubo, and signaled to fans that at least there is still love for the game from Namco employees past and present.
Unfortunately, with Namco laying off staff and canceling games,it’s unlikely that fans will hear anything from Project Soul in the foreseeable future. But fans can still hold on to hope that there are executives and other higher ups like Takahashi fighting for the future of the series.

An OTG, which stands for either "on the ground" or "off the ground" depending on who you ask, is exactly what the name implies, it’s an attack that hits the opponent when they’re in a knocked state. OTGs allow you to either extend a combo or get in that tiny extra bit of damage to secure a kill.

The term’s exact origin is unclear, but it definitely comes from Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3. As the story goes, one player, possibly PR Balrog, was celebrating their birthday while competing in a tournament.
In the late stages of the bracket, they called in a poorly timed assist and watched helplessly as their two remaining characters were knocked out. To rub salt in the wound, their opponent stood up and wished them a happy birthday.

The life of a professional Counter-Strike pro requires a ton of sacrifice to be the best. The Counter-Strike schedule constantly asks players to remain disciplined if they want to win.
But what happens if you have a team that sacrifices all the wrong things, wins, and then complains about it?
This is the story of how one of the hottest teams in Counter-Strike decided to get drunk the night before playoffs, showed up late for the Grand Finals, lost, and had more than half their roster leave the team in the aftermath.
