Anders Enger JensenHow many of you remember this old classic? I spent hours in front of the screen trying to hit that hole-in-one, only managed it once! Such a fun game, and that catchy intro song stuck with me ever since. Been meaning to remake it some time now for almost 30 years or so. Finally got off my butt and did it. I had initially begun filming me playing the parts, but then my MKS-50 died on me today so, I got kinda down and didn't have the will to film things. Gotta sort out this little baby first, so the video is only stock content and screen capture. And please ignore the terrible playing.. I like mulligans! ^_^
So here it is, from the Real Sound™ and the tiny little speaker in your PC, to a full blown 80s inspired synth pop song. Looks like you hit the tree, Jim!
Original song used in Links, is from Douglas Wood - Manouver #1 (youtu.be/rWPLAeOzpZg) Thanks to the keen eyed "SLON 1936" for telling me about this.

How could I ever improve on something that's already perfect? I hope I have at least been able to add a little extra beef here and there, basing it on Rick Beato's detailed insights on "What makes this song great" episode where he dissected Jump by Van Halen a couple of years ago.
Using those snippets he provided as well as what I believe is a recording from one of the singles back in the 80s with the a cappella vocals from the original, I set out to reconstruct my own take on this song, with some beefy synth bass, drums and keys to boot. The hardest task was to time-align the original song with the isolated vocals which also drifted from each other (I'm assuming tape/turntable drift somewhere in the loop back then) and then trying to mesh that with my more four on the floor grid approach (Sorry, Rick! ;)). I did end up doing a slight tempo variation throughout the song though to match the feel of the original session we all know and love.
I used a lot of layers to fatten things up, so there's a lot of Yamaha electric bass from Motif-Rack, Parker from reFX Nexus4, four layers of synth brass from Oberheim Matrix1000 (I don't own an OB-Xa/OB-8), Yamaha XS7, Ensoniq SD-1 and Roland JD-800. I've used some synth guitars and other sounds for the background guitar parts, but ended up using the original guitar solo from Eddie - it was impossible for me to translate it into something useable on my synths.
Hopefully I've managed to show this song some honor.

Alex Ball]Anders Enger Jensen2022-10-28 | The 90s called and wanted its groove back. I told it to stop, collaborate and listen! I've had this Alex Ball song on the agenda for quite some time too, and finally got around to finish it up. As always, he made some really catchy hooks that instantly got my 66% shuffle groove going. And I of course went a little more happy-pappy dance floor early 90s style, sprinkled with some glossy 80s FM ear candy and more.
This is for those who wonder, taken from Alex' video on the Yamaha TX81Z sound module and how he made a "90s Banger" on it. I've also used some TX sounds and enhanced the palette with all sorts of 80s and 90s relevant gear. Hope you like it! ;)

LYRICS
Verse 1: Now this is the verse rap section Cover your ears for your own protection ‘Cause I’m gonna lay it down Drop my lyrics all over the town
I got prose up in your face Teaming up with that Lately Bass We’ll be here for a little while With rhyming couplets in a 90s style
Verse 2: ‘Cause this is the way it should be Got funky sounds from the 81Z I got class, I’m a rapping hero My FM sounds are truly through-zero
I got MIDI to play the notes Sing back the melodies that I wrote My tunes play across the nations Slicker than CC information
Chorus 1: Now I’m saying I got nothing left that I can lose! And I’m showing that there’s nothing I should prove to you! Oh-oh! (2x)
Verse 3: I’m back with more rhyming verse The second time will probably be worse But I’ll give it my best shot More crappy lyrics is all I got
But I’ll bring some synth puns with ’em References to algorithms ‘Cause I’ll be your smooth operator You’re carrier, I’m modulator
Verse 4: Feedback, push the envelope I’ll spit more rhymes as you losers choke I got skills like learning the theory Which is why my sounds ain’t dreary
I’ve got groove, it’s so surprising With Stereoping, avoid menu diving So I’m gonna smell you later And leave you with the sounds of the tone generator!
Chorus 2: Now I’m saying I got nothing left that I can lose! And I’m showing that there’s nothing I should prove to you! Oh-oh! (2x)
Bridge: (Vocal adlibs)

Some improvements have been made to the display so it's less finicky now, but figured it was time to put this one out. With the plug and play display from Luxmuzik (ebay.to/2Sh2uMj), the process is very simple and straightforward.
[NB! This video is not endorsed or sponsored by Luxmuzik, I'm just simply showing how it's done. All display upgrades in my studio are bought by myself.]

Alex Ball] RemakeAnders Enger Jensen2022-10-25 | So, Alex Ball made this rather lovely track a couple of years ago, demonstrating the AMS 1580S and the AMS RMX 16 reverb and delay units. As usual, I couldn't resist taking the vocals and give them my own little twist. I started last year, but things came in the way and the project halted for a bit. Finally managed to complete it just now and here is the result.
Lyrics:
Verse 1: Agnus Dei with blessed rains above. Open waves, the children saved white doves.
Chorus: And if I can’t reach, you’ll lift me, my love. And if I can’t breathe, you will be my lungs.
Verse 2: Domine, thine image made echo. Empty space, ideas create that we know.
Chorus: And if I can’t reach, you’ll lift me, my love. And if I can’t breathe, you will be my lungs. And if I can’t breathe, you will be my lungs.

And some Valhalla reverb for good measure.
It's also a spoof of the meme with the picture of a Head Cleaner cassette and the text saying this was the worst band ever... clearly the demagnitizer cassettes with electronics were worse as they would pop your speakers if you had the sound on when playing them, but I couldn't make a 3:20 song with that noise so, pink it is.

Of course I could do that, so here is me demonstrating the micro KORG from 2002.
This was the one I dreaded the most, as Alex asked if I could do something "modern"... alas, when have I ever done "modern" stuff? LOL! It's also one of the less inspiring synths from KORG, at least from a preset point of view, so I had a hard time figuring what to do. Because of the "style" knob, I realised the best way was to try and do a little from most of the categories it has, as a sort of old time demo you'd find on old arranger keyboards and synths. Trying to keep to the one minute rule, I went a little over and could only fit "Trance, Electronica, Drum & Bass/Breaks and Retro" with a little vocoder thrown in for good measure. Obviously I could have looked for other custom sound banks that may be better at showing the true nature of the engines underneath – however, being a little lazy, short on time and also being adamant that the best way to show a synth is to see what can be done with factory sounds. And hopefully this shows a little of what this tiny monster can do with a little extra tweaking. ;)

Of course I could do that, so here is me demonstrating the Wavestation A/D from 1991.
Espen Kraft has of course done a number on this already, but I wanted to do something more appropriate of the time it was released so, hopefully it has a little more of that 90s vibe going on. For us Norwegians, the "Pharoah's Jig" wave loop is fairly recognisable , because it was used on Ole Edvard Antonsen's Tour de Force album from the same period and his version of Honky Tonk Women (go check it out and you'l see what I mean).
This module has so many vast possibilities so covering all of it in about a minute's time, is impossible, yet I hope it shows a little of what it can do. If you can't get the real deal, KORG does have the Legacy Collection at a fair price which will give you what you need to get started.

Since it doesn't have any other sounds, I spruced it up with some MS-10 (bass), Volca Beats and TR-Rack (drums and MIDI grand piano). Everything processed using, guess what - the Behringer X32R for some lush reverb! Hah! I betcha didn't think that could sound so sweet. ;)

Took a long time to finish the song and record the video during insane workloads these past months at my daytime job. But it's done now.
This was originally intended as song dedicated to my late mom, but we never got around to make lyrics and it just fizzled out. It became an instrumental track after all, still dedicated to the loss of those dear to me.
Used a lot of Roland MKS as usual and some Yamaha. Even a good deal of Ensoniq gear too as well as Nexus4 for the intro arpeggios in the background.

And what better song to do than #kimwilde 's "You Came"? Since the #shorts format is only one minute, I had to shorten the song and speed it up. Also, there aren't enough chords for me to use all 64 synths at the moment, so it landed on 52. Hopefully it's fun enough. ;)

The Pandemic certainly is over because everyone is having events and stuff which means I'm staying at hotels for weeks on end, barely home to change clothes!
Had a crazy idea of showing the project playing in realtime from Digital Performer on this one, but alas.. my 2013 mac doesn't really like capturing smooth video no matter what I adjust, enable/disable or reduce payload when playing so the video turned out jerky as hell and unusable. But I just don't have the energy nor the time to shoot multiple camera angles of playing parts so it's just a bunch of stock content footage.
Started using Nexus3 pads and bass, but then the rest of my MKS, TX and various KORGs joined in. :)

So this being a very happy and poppy riff - just up my alley, I couldn't resist.
Took me a few weeks to figure out how to best approach it. First I thought I should keep it at one minute in length, but it grew to at least two. So it's a thing between a #Shorts and a full 3 + min song.
Just the basic Roland, Yamaha, Korg, Ensoniq and Alesis gear. Drums from R-8M, HR-16, Quadrasynth and Sequential Tom. Various melodic synths, mainly Yamaha TX816, Motif series and a few Roland MKS, JD and others. Enjoy! :)

Everyone keeps asking me if I can play all my synths at once, and how that sounds. So here I am, doing just that. It's actually "only" the 55 out of 66 hardware synths, modules, samplers and drum machines I have at the moment. Some are out on loan, some are duplicates and already hooked up, and the drum machines doesn't really lend itself to this.. but you should be happy with 55 massive synths at the same time.

In addition, the pandemic prevented me from having Børge-Are over to record some real sax lines too. However, today we managed to do just that and got some good stuff and more. I also recorded him playing it live too, and this is the final result!
Many of you will remember Tex Murphy and his quest to solve the apparently not so regular death of Carl Linsky. The game from Access Software used RealSound™ which were samples that were played through the PC speaker and was pretty awesome for us back then - albeit being very crappy 8-bit and low resolution. Nonetheless, the music used (which I'm sure one of you will tell us in the comments where it originated from) was captivating and very late 80s. So after many years of wanting to remake it, I got around to do it, 32 years later!
Børge-Are graciously came over and recorded some great sax and let me film him playing too. Hopefully this made the song and video even better.

Many of you remember the classic "Are you keeping up with the #Commodore" commercial, and I had several requests over the last year if I could do a number on this. I tried to keep as much as possible from the original, but upgrading it, beefing it up and make it a little more snappy.
Since there are no multitracks available with the original vocal recordings, I just used www.vocalremovers.org since it's free, and it did a decent job of separating the voices from the backing track. Some phasing and flanging occurs, but I hope the delay and reverb plus the blending in the mix covers most of that anyway.
The song is in 163 BPM, so there's little time to relax, but it also gives a good drive. Using a lot of everything here, #Roland MKS modules, #Yamaha TX and Motifs, #Kurzweil 1000PX and HX, #Alesis QSR, #Ensoniq SD-1, TS-10, #Sequential TOM and various other hardware synths. Some ReFX Nexus2 with various expansion packs here and there, and some SID/Chiptunes thrown in for good measure. It's after all... about the Commodore, right?
I tried to find the original composers and songwriters, but couldn't find any. If you happen to know who made this song, please let me know in the comments.
Also thanks to Kristian Tjessem for letting me use the picture of his C64 and monitor.

Paulee Alex Bow]Anders Enger Jensen2021-07-20 | Back in 2018 a good friend of mine, Paulee Alex Bow, asked me if I wanted to finish off a song idea he had. I said yes of course and took his recorded midi-bass, piano chords, vocals and guitars and left the rest to me.
Using a lot of Yamaha and Roland outboards as well as Nexus2, Vengeance, Phalanx and some other stuff. I treated the vocals as best I can since he likes to record gritty and stuttery distortion vocals. I also had to fatten them up a little for the chorus using pitch shift, phase alignment and some chorus. Lots of Valhalla reverb as well as my trusty Strymon BigSky.
The song you hear is the result. Now, it's been out on Distrokid and all the usual channels since then, but I never got around to make a proper video about it. Ideally I envisioned a big production using actual school kids and people, and more fancy graphics etc. But then stuff happened, things got delayed and everything else that happened since then.. until now. So here it is, for better or for worse.
And yeah, help us stop bullying! ;)

********************************************************* Written and composed by Alex Paulee Bow Vocals, guitars and some synth parts: Alex Paulee Bow Arranged, mixed and mastered by Anders Enger Jensen Cover art: Reno ********************************************************* Lyrics: It’s 5 past 9 in the holding pen The local class bully making rounds again [You’re fat, you’re ugly, spotty, you are such a geek, you’re thin, you’re speccy, coward what’s the matter, freak?] He patters down the line of the soul defenceless. Dishing out the shame on a cold life sentence, Some of them may carry it for years and years, Some of them may end up in a tarn of tears
And the bully has probably, bullies of his own... his vengeance is keen, as his parents demean him at home...
Shame... nobody ever seems to own it they just pass it on down the line... Shame... you could be anything you wanted, till the hatred internalised Shame... and then they put you on a drug for what you brain cannot synthesize Shame... makes you feel unsafe in another’s eyes Shame... makes you feel unable to go outside Shame... shame is only lies!
People laughed at me for the longest time I thought it was my fault for the longest time I couldn’t shake it off for the longest time I couldn’t shake it off for the longest time All the time I’ve lost, it’s such a shame.
Cast off the shackles of shame, baby! Cast off the shackles of shame.
Shame... nobody ever seems to own it they just pass it on down the line... Shame... you could be anything you wanted! Noelle did all the official music for this game, as I had little time to devote to this project except for the design and label stuff as usual. However, in January this year, I sat down and made some songs that I thought could fit the game. Using only hardware and no soft synths or samples, I did a series of tunes inspired by the titles of the maps in the game.
Initially I planned these to be loopable and short as most in game music tends to be, but I quickly found myself making more or less full songs with a more normal structure. So this alternate soundtrack is more of a synth inspired album that some of you may find ok to play in the background while playing the game.

Tonight you had to leave us, after 16 long years. It was a difficult choice for Mona, but one that I wholeheartedly support – even though it hurts so much knowing that you will never ride along with me on our trips to Valdres again. Never again will you lie next to me in bed, cuddlin. Never again shall we go for long walks and smell all those exciting things along the road, and never again enjoy those treats that you never could get enough of.
It has been eight great years with you since 2013 – when I first started babysitting you, Liza & Thelma. You stole everyone's heart with your kind and soft manner. Never did you bark, nor jump on anyone or even lick them down like most other dogs do. You were just quiet and welcomed cuddles long as you could have it – otherwise you would just go and lay down silently in your basket. ❤
I cannot count how many miles of car trips you have been with me, nor walks in the woods. A tired soul has been laid to eternal rest now. And you deserve it, little friend. I could see how tired you were these past few years, poor sight, no hearing, stiff and aching joints etc. It would have been malpractice to keep you going at it any further. But still... we all wish we could have one last summer with you also. Our hearts bleed and the tears flow. If there would be any afterlife, I sincerely hope you're in doggy heaven with Thelma and Liza.
Thank you very much Mona, for all the trust I have been given babysitting your dogs. Words can not measure how much love they have given me and mom these years. And thank you for that last little farewell I had with her yesterday at your place. The biggest and warmest hugs as I know how hard this evening have been for you.
There's new shining star in the sky tonight. 💖

Alex BallAnders Enger Jensen2021-04-04 | So.. apparently @AlexBallMusic said that I forgot that I had the Roland MP-600... because it's forgettable. And it IS very much so! This analog electric piano from Roland's line up in the year 1978. As Alex states, you could get the Paraphonic/RS-505, the Jupiter-4 and the MP-600 back then. Sonically this piano is very boring and pretty heavy to play. Maybe those used to play on weighted keys will have much better luck - I find myself struggling to be comfortable with it.
We both agree that this was most likely an attempt to give the performing keyboard player an assortment of everything he/she would need on stage back then, at a fairly affordable price. Since all these instruments are more or less preset machines, they serve the professional live gigging musician well - at least back in the late 70s. Being a sizeable stage piano, you could easily fit either the RS-505 or the JP-4 on top of it as well as some assortment of effect pedals.
As Alex said in his RS-505 video (youtu.be/l-oITC12AXU), I had forgotten I had this MP-600 when he asked me for some help on his Roland documentary (youtu.be/JcbpRMZIQ8g), but since he brought it up recently... how could I pass up this opportunity to feature it in this little video?
Granted, I should have perhaps dug a little deeper into it and given you a detailed tour, but it was only meant as a short little demo for Alex to see, in case he wanted me to send it over. It really is a very limited 70s electric piano that doesn't resemble much of a grand piano. It consists of three tone generators that you can mix on the fly. Tone 1 is a low end portion of the piano sound, tone 2 is the mid range and tone 3 is some high end sizzle in form of a rather annoying buzz. You can also change the decay to be short or long, as well as use a damper or sustain pedal to get regular piano response. I didn't have one that worked - Roland's own did not work with the right polarity, how about that? ;)
You can also change the EQ of the entire sound to sculpt it so it fits your style and performance. Other than that, it's mono, and no effects so everything has to be added externally.
I hope this demo showcases a little how this sounds, and what you can do with it - and that's not much to be fair. ;)
The drums used on this song are: Roland TR-707, Alesis HR-16 and Yamaha XS7 Bass sound: Roland MKS-80 Effects: TC Electronic Corona Chorus, 2290 Delay, Ensoniq DP/4+ and Strymon BigSky (Reverbs)

So a new and secret song will appear there instead.
However, this song started out with over five half-baked sketches in various genres and tempos, but nothing panned out. Just as I was about to give up on it, I just lowered the tempo to 105 BPM and took a ballad approach, and suddenly it just fit together. Happy Valentine's Day to a special someone. ;)

A brilliant piece of game music from the famous #AlexanderBrandon who made such classics as Jazz Jackrabbit 2, Deus Ex, Unreal and many others. This has also been featured on #LGR and it seems the majority out there favours the Adlib version to the MT-32/SC-55, so it was with a bit of trepidation I started working on this, trying to keep it up to standard with what people love about it out there.
Initially I set out to do the intro music too, but landed on just the "Tyrian - The Level" segment which seems to be the most recognised theme from the game. As with all the other songs in this series, I also opted for some extrapolation and added a little more parts and extended the song - the original is after all only 24 measures on endless repeat, which would have become a bit boring for 3.5 minutes.
All the sounds are from the KORG M1Rex, the expanded module version of the classic M1 keyboard. Everything was recorded part for part and bit for bit, which took a substantial amount of time when trying and failing as I went along. Some extra processing in form of EQ, compression, chorus, delay, and reverb were added. The M1Rex doesn't have a ride cymbal, or at least a proper one that could be used, so there is a little Roland TR-707 ride at the last rounds of the theme.
Big thanks to Alexander Brandon for his great work. Check out his channel (youtube.com/user/AlexCBrandon) and website Funky Rustic (https://www.funkyrustic.net).

This is a short medley of three of the most known themes from the game, originally composed by the great Robert Prince who gave us memorable music to Wolfenstein 3D, DOOM and many of the other games from ID.
Since the original themes are very short and looped, I felt some of them could do with a little extrapolation, and as the first theme is based on a blues chord progression, it kinda took its own turn into a blues rock thing before we move onto the part which Robert initially had composed for the cut scene that was taken out. This is where Billy would have been forced to eat his vegetables. Take a look at Robert's own description for this scene in this old behind the scenes video from those days: youtu.be/HpEBUV_g9vU?t=122
Ideally I would have used an EPS sampler from Ensoniq, like Robert used, but I felt my SD-1 was the closest, while also being able to give a limited sound palette which is also part of the point of this series - it's about how to take gear that is seemingly limited, and coax something useful out of it - even with factory sounds too.
Parts (at least what I think they're called seen in other videos): 00:00 - Shadows Don't Scare Commander Keen!! 01:45 - You've Got to Eat Your Vegetables!! 02:47 - Welcome to a Kick In Yore Pants In Good Ole Hillville!

I have finally been able to buy my own place after many years of renting a place, and also one with enough space to build my studio the way I wanted it! It's been a long ride since I first started looking for places in earlier this year, but with a lot of patience and a stroke of luck, I found this great place outside of Oslo in a quiet little hidden town.
Here I could set up all my gear and have plenty of room to move in, as opposed to the last place where I could hardly move while working, in fear of knocking some synths over. I also have enough space for a spacious bedroom, a big bathroom, large kitchen two storage rooms, a big entrance and even a lounge/living room area for guests and my significant other.
Albeit being big and lush here, there are some items I couldn't fit, like some of my more weird and not so much used keyboards, old mixers and modules, but they'll just have to be in storage for a while before I may sell them off at some point. At the moment, I have all I need for making music and more.
Stay tuned to Espen Kraft's channel too, he might even drop by and do a little studio visit on his channel some time soon. That'll be fun.

I've taken the liberty of tidying up some of the parts and making it more punchy as usual. I also felt the Fester Blatz and Monolith Burger themes could do with some 66% shuffle groove. ;)
The drums are from Zenhiser 80s Retro Drummer and Yamaha Motif XS-7.

Initially I tried to keep it dark and more mysterious, but the funky brass parts of the MKS-80 and Ensoniq Fizmo took over. As did the sultry Prophet lead from the KORG Wavestation A/D and the rest just came crashing down from West Coast/LA-Fusion land... couldn't help it! ^_^
