💧 H2O INTRO 🤝 Meet Melody Bailey, Director of Water Resources at Mojave Water Agency.
Managing water in a desert that receives about four inches of precipitation a year leaves little room for defaulting to “this is how we’ve always done it.”
Mojave Water Agency is a California State Water Project contractor responsible for helping balance water supply and demand across an extremely arid region. Bailey says that scarcity requires the agency to approach projects with greater creativity and make more from limited resources.
Her capstone project focused on developing better processes and project-management practices for agency staff. The goal is to give employees practical tools, clearer steps, and the confidence to make decisions independently.
Those systems also reduce the mental burden of managing many competing projects at once. By creating consistent ways to move work forward, staff can focus their attention on the decisions and challenges that matter most.
For Bailey, sustainable water growth depends partly on infrastructure and supply—but also on whether agencies are willing to rethink familiar processes and improve how projects get done.
