It's all she does day and night with hopes of carrying her team, The Betas, to success. Unfortunately for her, The Betas suck. Despite being a nationally ranked player on her team, her male teammates don't see her for her skills but only allow her on the team because she's a girl. They are the epitome of "git gud scrub" obnoxious male gamers. Team leader Dustin (Taylor Zakhar Perez) is particularly degrading and won't take fault for his mistakes, all pushing V to, understandably, quit the team in disgust even if it means putting her scholarship in danger. She has only one course of action to keep it - form a new varsity team. With funding only available for one team, her path runs straight through The Betas.The rest of the trailer is essentially a training montage as part of V, her friend, and their new female teammates' revenge arc. At first, things don't go well with The Betas trouncing them, but no good revenge arc starts without the heroes at their lowest. This ragtag group finds their savior in their professor who gives them a new name, The 8-Bits, and all the old-school gaming training they need to succeed. Her methods are unconventional, ranging from live-action role-playing to creating a "realistic" Beta dummy to focus their anger on, but it's enough to prepare them for nationals, and for The Betas.Alongside Berelc, Rose, and Zakhar Perez, 1UP also features Hari Nef (Assassination Nation), Nicholas Coombe (The Wilds), D.J. Doctor Strange 2 Deleted Scene Gifts Us More of Bruce Campbells Pizza Poppa [Exclusive] Collider Exclusives 2022-06-20 | Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness introduced the world to a brand-new working-class hero in the form of Pizza Poppa played by the beloved Bruce Campbell and now Collider has a new exclusive deleted scene that brings more of the pizza ball-slinging entrepreneur to screens. However, if you're also calling for justice for the poor unfortunate street vendor, you won't find it here. Instead, the clip shows Pizza Poppa pinning Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) as a petty pilferer beyond his patented pizza balls. The scene is one of several that will be featured as part of the home release of the film which will be available digitally on all major platforms on June 22 and physically on 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD on July 26. The film will also be on Disney+ on June 22, though without the extra features.Titled "It's Not Permanent" the scene picks up right where Strange and Pizza Poppa cross paths. Rather than a quick altercation that turns to violence after Strange curses him to squirt mustard in his eyes and punch himself for three weeks, there's a build-up to the eventual pummeling of the Poppa. Strange steps in to defend America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) from Pizza Poppa's demand for payment. Given that Earth-838's Doctor Strange is dead though, Pizza Poppa comes to the conclusion that Strange is more than just a thief of pizza balls - he's a thief of identity. Upon feeling Strange's cape cloak, he notices how authentic it seems and accuses the sorcerer of stealing the cloak from The Strange Museum, Earth-838's memorial to their late superhero.It's only then that Pizza Poppa, in the name of justice, utters the schlocky action movie line of "You're a taker. Why don't you take some mustard, huh?" and tries to take down the villainous Strange with his trusty mustard bottle. Of course, the outcome is still the same with Strange putting the poor Poppa in a world of hurt while he and America make off with his food. It's understandable why the scene got cut—it's snappier seeing Campbell more quickly getting pummeled—but it's also fun watching the misunderstanding and more torturous for Pizza Poppa now that he knows for certain a dead man cursed him.The encounter with Campbell's Pizza Poppa is only one such stop on Strange's multiversal journey which also stars Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, and Rachel McAdams. Sam Raimi, Campbell's old pal from Evil Dead and so many cameos, came in to direct the film, bringing his signature directing flair, and Campbell tormenting style, to the MCU. Not only is the second film from Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert one of the best-reviewed films of the year, but it also recently surpassed Uncut Gems to become the highest-grossing release from A24 ever. There’s a lot to unpack with Everything Everywhere All At Once, and it’s the perfect film to watch with your finger on the pause button to catch everything. It's a pivotal moment for Amleth, who receives a gift from his father from these spoils that he carries with him into his adulthood.While the deleted scene is more of an extension of a scene that audiences can find in the theatrical cut, it does add a few more layers to King Aurvandill's character—showing that while he may be a man more inclined to pillage and plunder, he is also a man who has a way with words. He also recognizes that his people aren't looking for fanciful war stories, they're looking for tangible evidence of his success on the battlefield. American Carnage Trailer Teases Teens Trapped in a Demented, Deadly Nursing Home Collider Exclusives 2022-06-01 | Collider is excited to exclusively revealthe first trailer and poster for the upcoming thriller/comedy film American Carnage, which will release in both theaters and on Digital and On Demand on July 15. The upcoming film from Julio Hallivis and Diego Hallivis, both of who wrote the film, with Diego serving as the director, sees a governor sign an executive order to arrest the children of undocumented immigrants. The main character that the trailer follows is JP, played by Jorge Lendeborg Jr., who is among those arrested due to the order from the governor.JP is offered a deal, however, where he can get his charges dropped by volunteering to provide care to the elderly at an eldercare facility. The trailer introduces many of the characters that took the same deal and will be joining JP in this facility, who include Jenna Ortega, Allen Maldonado, Bella Ortiz, and Eric Dane. The film teases that there is something else happening beneath the surface at the facility, with the ending of the trailer leaning into the more horrific side that the film will reveal.The Hallivis Brothers have previously worked together on several other films, such as The Duel from 2011, which was Diego's feature film directorial debut, and 2017's science fiction thriller Curvature, with Julio serving as the producer on the films and Diego as the director on both projects. For American Carnage, Diego once again steps behind the camera as the director, though this is the first time the pair will also be penning the script for their movie. The house is clearly not all that it seems with Tom repeatedly noticing someone else in the house. If that weren't bad enough, he meets the ghost of Banner's wife (Sarah Hay) who is still trapped with her husband in the house, and finds human remains buried in the yard, only creating more mysteries about what happened with the infamous architect. Banner clearly dabbled in the occult far more than was public knowledge as his mentor (Bruce Dern) detailed how to live on beyond death itself. With Banner's ghost around and his Norman Bates-like son Eldridge spying on Tom and Alice, the couple is in grave danger in what should've been a home away from home.O'Hara is directing from a screenplay written by Stern in his first writing credit for a feature film. O'Hara will make her feature directing debut on June 1 with Root Letter, though she also has a few directing credits for a number of shorts and multiple episodes of Doomsday. The film is now streaming on Paramount+ and is available on 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD on August 9.The scene starts off familiar with Wade walking into the doors of the Mean Bean Coffee Company only to find the secret lair of Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) where his assistant Agent Stone (Lee Majdoub) is currently selecting an outfit for him. Rather than immediately jump to Wade bursting through the doors in an attempt to bust Stone, he decides to check with his boss before he goes rushing in. Tom, who's just had to deal with an ambush at Rachel's wedding, takes Commander Walters' (Tom Butler) radio and responds. What follows is a classic breakdown in communication gag where the radio cuts out at the worst time and Wade mishears (or, from his perspective, hears loud and clear) Tom's warning as an urging to go inside. It doesn't do much for the plot, but it's an extra, classic gag thrown in to emphasize Wade's big oaf energy.Tom's warning would also be proven immediately correct when an upgraded Robotnik pops into the hideout while Wade was interrogating Stone. The deleted scene is just one that can be viewed as part of the home release of the film. There's also a new poster that harkens back to classic action films like Face/Off with stars Gigandet and Randy Couture (The Expendables) side-by-side ahead of their on-screen confrontation. The film hits theaters alongside a digital and on-demand release on June 17.The trailer sees Nick (Gigandet) getting a crew together and prepping for a big-time bank robbery which will set everyone involved up for life. The main target is a highly sought-after briefcase that he wants all to himself, while the rest of the bank's cash will go to the crew. Once they pull off the heist though, the ruse is revealed and Nick is gunned down with the double-crossers securing the briefcase for Jack (Couture). Nick manages to survive though and gives up the chase for the briefcase, so he can take down everyone that set him up. He even goes back to the man he stole the case from and offers to take it back for him. From there, he goes on a hunt, investigating, torturing, and shooting his way closer to the case, and to the man that tried to have him killed.Blowback will really ratchet up the tension for Nick's hunt to find the briefcase, which contains an untold fortune in cryptocurrency. While he investigates, both the police and the mob will be closing in, meaning his life depends on retrieving that case. It'll be a three-sided race for the fortune as we'll swap between Nick, Jack, and the police in what's sure to be a tense thriller.Alongside Couture and Gigandet, Blowback stars Michele Plaia (Sleepy Hallow) and Louis Mandylor (Rambo: Last Blood, The Offer). Tibor Takács will direct the film as one of his two upcoming action films starring Gigandet. Must've been a tough one to get behind, no?Mikkelsen shares his thoughts: "Grindelwald's a man who wants to make the world a better place. The means by which he wants to achieve that isn't necessarily what everybody else is agreeing on. Historically wizards and witches have not been treated well by people. We have to remember that people can also be very brutal, and that his hatred grew stronger and stronger."Yep — sounds pretty Hitler-y to us, especially given "a better place" is just shorthand for "totally free of muggles." Nightmare Alley Featurette Highlights the Wardrobe for Guillermo del Toro’s Noir Masterpiece Collider Exclusives 2022-03-18 | In an exclusive new featurette, Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley cast and crew discuss how the movie’s fabulous wardrobe was put together. The neo-noir thriller is set in the late 1930s, and an essential part of what makes the movie so visually stunning is the wardrobe put together by Costume Designer Luis Sequeira and Production Designer Tamara Deverell.In the featurette, del Toro explains how he wanted each character to be immediately recognizable by the audience. As Sequeira explains it, “Guillermo wanted very few costume changes” to happen through the movie, which meant designing a unique look for each character that would fit the period setting and give them a distinguished look from one another. One of the main tools used by the Nightmare Alley crew to achieve this goal was to base specific characters’ costumes on unique colors or fabrics.As del Toro explains, Molly (Rooney Mara) represented life, so they chose the color red for the character. That means that the color red was only used for Molly’s wardrobe and for the Salvation Army sign that shows up in the film. As for Toni Collette’s Zeena, the character was represented by green and gold to show her connection to the earth and the grass, since she’s such a grounded character. No Time to Die Behind-the-Scenes VFX Featurette Reveals How Team Filmed Bonds Near-Drowning Scene Collider Exclusives 2022-03-17 | There are many set pieces in No Time to Die that perfectly justifies the movie being nominated for the Best Visual Effects Oscar. However, one breathtaking moment right at the beginning of No Time to Die stands out from all others: the sinking trawler scene where Daniel Craig’s 007 almost drown. In an exclusive featurette for Collider, Special Effects Supervisor Chris Corbould and Visual Effects Supervisor Charlie Noble reveal how practical and digital effects worked together to create the thrilling moment.In the video, Corbould reveals that most of the underwater scene was shot with stunt personnel and cast members inside a colossal tank capable of moving around to mimic the chaotic situation of a sinking boat. So, when we see James Bond swimming underwater, there’s little to no CG involved. The CG part of the job was actually used to create the exterior images of the trawler sinking in the ocean, as it wouldn’t be feasible to sink a boat multiple times to get a shot.By using real vehicles, stunts, and even explosions, No Time to Die got to create a stunning visual spectacle, worth the first Academy Awards nomination of the franchise since 1980’s Moonraker. Curious enough, Corbould was also part of Moonraker’s crew, and in the fifteen years he has been working with the 007 franchise, the Special Effects Supervisor always prioritized practical effects over digital models.According to Corbould, this commitment to do most of the film with practical effects makes No Time to Die look better than a CGI-based blockbuster, even though VFX had an important part to play in the movie's production. As Corbould explained it to Collider: “No Time To Die was the greatest collaboration I have ever experienced with Visual Effects. Where possible we tried to do everything in-camera but VFX did a huge amount to complement and improve our work. In addition, once we had filmed the actors within the sinking trawler VFX then created a seamless series of photo-realistic shots showing a totally CG trawler sinking into the depths.”As Noble explains, the focus on practical effects doesn’t save the VFX team much time, but instead gives the people who make CG solid material to work with. That’s because, since there are so many references shot on film, the CG team can make precise models and textures, which in turn allows the seamless transition between practical and digital scenes. In Noble’s words: “There were 1500 shots spread throughout the running time from removing pod drivers from the roof of the picture cars to full CG shots of the trawler sinking. Having so much in-camera was key to creating seamless and consistent VFX shots when called upon to support the narrative. Exclusive Candyman Featurette Breaks Down the VFX Behind the Horrifying Urban Legend Collider Exclusives 2022-02-25 | In celebration of Nia DaCosta's Candyman being nominated for one of the top prizes of the Visual Effects Society (VES) annual awards, Collider is excited to premiere a new featurette breaking down the digital effects work behind the spiritual horror sequel. Produced by Jordan Peele, the latest Candyman installment was highly praised for its looks, which pay homage to Bernard Rose’s original 1992 film while also creating a unique identity.In the new featurette, Luma Pictures goes through creating a new version of the iconic Candyman with 3D modeling. According to Luma Pictures’ VES-nominated VFX supervisor, Andrew Zink, Candyman was initially an actor wearing prosthetics. However, “the filmmakers decided the prosthetic wasn’t real or visceral enough” in post-production, leading Luma Pictures in a race against the clock to create a full-digital version of the character. As the featurette shows, that means creating a 3D model, animating it, and making sure it has the right textures and colors to look natural in the eyes of horror fans. As Zink explains the process: “It was a hard and fast pivot for us. This was challenging because we didn’t receive any references of his head or face. And since Sherman [a.k.a. the Candyman] was never meant to be a full digital double, there was of course no motion capture or facial performance footage available. We had to quickly develop a complex facial-animation rig that would breathe life and nuance into his facial performance. We also researched crime scene photography, blunt force trauma wounds, and medical references in order to craft his asset with a high level of detail and ensure he would hold up to multiple close-ups.”As Zink tells, some scenes of the Candyman were easier to recreate than others. For example, it was hard to get the digital double to perform protagonist Anthony McCoy's (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) movements in the hallway scene. During this scene, Anthony sees Candyman inside mirrors, as the apparition takes the place of his own reflection. In Zink's words: “Another challenge was the hallway scene where Sherman mimics Anthony’s reflection. The actors had been filmed together, working with a choreographer to match each other’s movements through a fake mirror. However, the plate of the performance didn't provide us with all the information we’d need to inform our match-move criteria. So our animation department, led by Raphael Pimentel, stepped in to fill in the gaps, such as hands, arms, legs, and the facial performance, which had all been obstructed by Anthony.”When asked to comment on the recent VES Awards nomination, Zink also said: “The VES nomination means so much to us. Most horror films don’t have the same budget as tentpole blockbusters, so we were especially proud of what we were able to pull off. It was a true collaboration with the other vendors and with James McQuaide, who Luma Pictures has worked with many times before. Exclusive: Watch Cruella VFX Team Create Some of Its Most Iconic Scenes and Gowns in New Video Collider Exclusives 2022-01-12 | Collider got an exclusive video from MPC Film that breaks down the VFX work of Cruella, Disney's successful live-action prequel starring Emma Stone as the titular villain. The new video shows some of the film’s most iconic scenes, explaining how the VFX team used digital models to create Cruella’s stunning visuals.The new video strips down several shots from Cruella, revealing how the VFX team modified color and light to give the movie its unique tone. More impressive is the addition of digital models to represent Cruella’s dogs and even buildings. The VFX team also did an amazing job removing elements from the frame, with a couple of bird-eye view shots from London showing how buildings were erased for the movie. Since Cruella is a prequel set in the 1970s, the VFX had to transform the whole city to avoid anachronism.In addition to the video, Production VFX Supervisor Max Wood also explained how some scenes were put together, such as the ball scene where Cruella first shows up as her villainous persona. Cruella burns a paper cloak she’s wearing in the scene, only to reveal a stunning dress hiding underneath. Although the scene only has three shots, the VFX team had a lot of work to put the flaming cloak together. As Wood tells us: “The three shots were first filmed with Cruella, Emma Stone, wearing the red dress. Then, after a hair, make-up, and costume change, she repeated the action in the white hooded cape for all three shots. We knew that the cape would be CG but these takes gave the Visual Effects team a perfect reference of how the cape would move and how the shiny fabric would look under the on-set lighting.”Filming Stone with different costumes allowed the VFX team to gather references to simulate the movement of the paper cloak Cruella uses. However, lighting it on fire and making it look realistic was a challenge of its own. As Wood explains the process: “As it [the cloak] ignites, not only do the small pieces break away, but there is an overall rising effect of the cape to simulate what happens to real flash paper when ignited. Once the cape began to move correctly, flames and smoke were simulated, and a lighting effect was added to the surrounding environment and party-goers to integrate the effect."Cruella's cast includes Paul Walter Hauser, Joel Fry, Emma Thompson, Emily Beecham, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Mark Strong, John McCrea, and Kayvan Novak. It’s not hard, then, for someone to put the blame on the firefighter once his wife gets murdered.When the police officers who arrested the firefighter try to kill him, Geduld’s character escapes from custody and decides to look for the truth. In the process, he ends up uncovering a government conspiracy to create mind-controlled soldiers, an experiment that also explains his delicate mental state. Entitled “My Desert, My Dune,” the featurette explores the long and arduous process Villeneuve went through to bring his vision of Dune to life.In the video, Villeneuve says that “Dune took years to be made because it was a challenge to respect the spirit of Frank Herbert´s book and bring it to the big screen.” Herbert’s book had already been adapted once by David Lynch, in 1984, during a production so chaotic that the director removed his name from the credits. Since then, Dune has been considered unadaptable. That is, until Villeneuve split the book story into two and brought a beautiful and vibrant vision of the first half to theaters last year.To achieve the critically acclaimed result of Dune, Villeneuve focused on the design of a world that felt alive. Candyman Extended Scene Asks Who Makes the Hood Collider Exclusives 2021-11-01 | If you’re looking for that perfect Christmas gift for your horror enthusiast friend or loved one, you may want to consider buying the horror-slasher-thriller film Candyman, as the film is coming to Digital, 4K Ultra HD, and Blu-ray this month, and Collider can reveal an exclusive extended scene to celebrate the release. All versions of the film come with over an hour of bonus features including a never-before-seen alternate ending, deleted and extended scenes as well as special featurettes that take viewers behind-the-scenes of the film and deeper into this complex and deeply resonant contemporary take on the bone-chilling urban legend.Candyman is written by Oscar winner Jordan Peele (Get Out, Us) and directed by Nia DaCosta (Little Woods) and it tells the story of Candyman, an urban legend myth (or at least so it’s said), that will kill someone if they say their name five times into a mirror.The sequel to the 1992 cult classic, Candyman takes place in Chicago and centers around artist Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) who is living in the city with his girlfriend Brianna Cartwright (Teyonah Parris). McCoy soon becomes drawn to the urban legend of Candyman, and seeks to find out the truth behind the urban myth. McCoy’s curiosity leaves him questioning everything he knows in ways he could not imagine.The scene is an extended version of the one released for the theatrical version of Candyman, where Anthony debates an art critic who suggests that artists were the original gentrifiers. “Who do you think makes the hood?” Anthony asks her, before explaining how cities cut off communities and wait for them to die before inviting developers and young, preferably white people to come and gentrify it.The extended scene expands on Anthony's explanation of the systematic erasure of communities of color, with cities waiting like vultures for the roads to be full of potholes, buildings to crumble and crime to rise, as finally spirits in the community get broken and the place becomes unlivable before the gentrification process begins. The seventh Paranormal Activity installment will premiere exclusively on the streaming service on October 29 — just in time for Halloween weekend.In this reimagining of the Paranormal Activity franchise, a documentary crew follows Margot (Charmed's Emily Bader) as she ventures to an isolated Amish community in the hopes of meeting and learning about her long-lost mother and extended family. However, she soon realizes that the community that first welcomed them with open arms might be hiding a very sinister secret.In the exclusive clip below, Margot experiences a rather creepy moment with one of the young girls who lives in the Amish community and tells Margot that her supposedly vanished mother might still be near — and more than that, she doesn't want Margot around very much either. Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin also stars Roland Buck III (Better Call Saul), Dan Lippert (Superstore), and Henry Ayers-Brown (The Blacklist).When Collider spoke with producer Jason Blum, he expanded on why the latest movie in the Paranormal Activity franchise will actually serve as a reboot, even though the script hails from Christopher Landon (Happy Death Day, Freaky), who penned sequels Paranormal Activity 2 through Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones: “Paramount wanted to continue Paranormal Activity, I probably would have left it alone. So they wanted to continue it, but I thought if they were gonna continue it, you gotta - it was tired, there was no way to continue the road that we’d been down. So I really encouraged all the creative people involved to think of something new. A lot of people who are going to go see the new Paranormal Activity were 3 years old when the first Paranormal Activity came out, so they don’t even know from those older movies. I thought if you were going to re-do it, you better really re-do it, not try and expand what we did all those years ago."Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin is directed by William Eubank and written by Landon who also serves as executive producer alongside Steven Schneider and Jenny Hinkey.
