Bigfoots in Your Backyard Friends of Science 2025-01-21 | A #KidFriendly #ClimateTaleThis is meant as a fun little story to introduce kids to concepts about the solar system.Ben and Bella are bored being stuck inside. Their mom tells them that they can't go out to play because their dad and a friend are clearing out trees in the backyard to FireSmart their home before wildfire season. Wildfire?? The kids feel afraid, immediately thinking wildfire is caused by climate change. But their mom explains that wildfires are normal and the way that the forest regenerates itself. Their mom says the Sun and oceans drive climate change. She suggests that the kids should make the solar system kit they got for Christmas, but they don't want to. The kids say their teacher said humans drive climate change, and that the Sun looks too small in the sky...and it looks too small in the solar system kit, only the size of a baseball. Their mom points out that it pays to read the instructions on the box - because the solar kit is not to scale. The true size of the Sun would be over 8 feet compared to the tiny planets! She suggests that Ben and Bella use their imagination to get over their boredom. They do! And they imagine that there is a whole family of Bigfoots in their backyard! If you're in Alberta, wildfire season starts mid-April - and that's the time when most of the biggest wildfires have started because that is a shoulder period between snow melt, spring rain, and the rejuvenation of trees and shrubs (which makes them more fire resistant). A Globe and Mail editorial recently claimed that urban wildfires are a growing threat due to climate change. About the same time, Edmonton announced it had had a record-breaking year for planting trees in the city. And just a few weeks before these two announcements in the press, the analysis report of the Kelowna wildfires was released. By reading through the Kelowna report, it becomes clear rather quickly that the risk of urban wildfires is related to how much and what type of foliage or flammable material is adjacent to your house or on your deck. How close are houses being built? What kind of municipal planning and permitting is in place that considers the potential urban wildfire risk - especially when we have seen Calgary's main water feeder breakdown, resulting in water rationing for weeks? This could happen in any community during times of drought or infrastructure breakdowns. We're spending BILLIONS on climate change, when we could be spending a few hundred or a few thousand on implementing FireSmart recommendations for our homes and communities. The 2024 Fall Economic Statement – Climate-related Measures Friends of Science 2024-12-31 | Canadians were in shock as the much-delayed Fall Economic Statement was about to be tabled in the House of Commons, but Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister coincidentally resigned in a public way on Dec. 16, 2024. Most of the media comments were taken up with that drama and the fact that the budgetary deficit had blown past the 'guardrails' of $40 billion to an astounding $61.9 billion. This meant that few media outlets were examining the contents of the Statement. Robert Lyman, former federal public servant of 27 years and diplomat for 10 years, took the time to do a quick summary of the climate - related measures in the budget for a blog post for Friends of Science Society. Peace, Order and Good Government Means No Carbon Tax Friends of Science 2024-12-05 | The Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act in Canada was primarily based on the notion of a unified imposition of carbon pricing/tax or equivalent mechanism (i.e. Quebec's cap-and-trade arrangement with California). The Supreme Court noted that this was underwritten by a federal mandate to be fair and maintain "Peace, Order and Good Government (POGG)." However, the Liberals granted a dispensation to the Maritimes on heating oil; the Quebec arrangement is much cheaper than the carbon tax burden elsewhere (though Quebeckers don't get a carbon rebate), and Quebec's arrangement allows for more emissions! Thus, it seems that the notion of a nationally unified policy is no more! Eat the Bugs - Bill C-293 Friends of Science 2024-11-27 | Prof. Sylvain Charlebois (aka @FoodProf on 'X') has raised questions about certain parts of Bill C-293, a pandemic preparation bill. Canada has had a pandemic plan in place since at least 2006, one that was signed off by Dr. Teresa Tam. Thus, what is the purpose of Bill C-293 which includes curious passages related to controlling industrial animal agriculture and promoting 'alternative proteins'? There are various reports in the Overton Window that climate activists would like to see COVID-style lockdown measures applied to Canadians in order to force us to meet unattainable climate targets. This video discusses various concerns about these disconcerting ideas and policies and possible implications. Considerations about Solar Farms in Southern Alberta Friends of Science 2024-11-15 | The Medicine Hat Utilities Ratepayer Association (MHURA) is concerned about the City of Medicine Hat's interest in acquiring the rights to a $600 million, 325 MW solar farm - "Saamis Solar Park" from DP Energy. The population of Medicine Hat is only about 63,000 people. The plan would be to build the park within Medicine Hat city limits on an old brownfield contaminated site. Medicine Hat has its own natural gas power generation and distribution facilities. MHURA wanted to better understand issues related to solar farms and power generation operations. COP29 Climate Conference - From Baku to You. Friends of Science 2024-11-13 | Minister Guilbeault, Canada's Minister of Environment and Climate Change, has flown over 9,000 km to Baku, Azerbaijan to save the planet and fight climate change! Azerbaijan is a petro-state with a poor environmental record. Minister Guilbeault recently announced a cap on emissions for Canadian oil and gas - but no other country in the world is doing such a thing. Ironically, at COP29, the President of Azerbaijan announced that 'fossil fuels are a gift of the god.' To 'stop climate change' - groups like the World Economic Forum are advocating for a $1 TRILLION/year fund for climate finance - as if money can stop Mother Nature. Meanwhile, Canada seems to be coming up with climate policies, like the 'cap' on emissions, thanks to nudging from climate activists funded by the Trottier Family Foundation. Though Minister Guilbeault claims it was the warmest year on record, that's not what the record shows; and though he claims Canada 'must do its part' - the only part we can address is our 1.5% of global emissions....compared to large emitters like China at 30%! $1 Trillion a Year for Climate Action Friends of Science 2024-11-12 | COP 29 - the annual climate "Conference of the Parties" which are signatory to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is going on in Baku, Azerbaijan (Nov. 11-22, 2024). Azerbaijan is a petro-state and some climate activists refuse to go there for that reason or for human rights reasons. Of course, thousands of people will attend - most of them flying there. And when they get back home they will tell you that you should stop flying to save the planet. Most people don't know that in the lead up to a COP conference, there are about 1,000 other conferences held all over the world where climate activists and government parties discuss what they will talk about at the actual big COP conference. The tenth anniversary of the Paris Agreement is coming up next year, and climate activists are desperate that targets should be met. This year, the climate activists are raising ambitions from having a $100 billion/year Green Climate Fund (to help poor countries get into renewables) to one TRILLION dollars a year - of your money. But all this is in peril as Donald Trump became president-elect in the USA just days before the COP29 conference started. He pulled out of the Paris Agreement last time. After the Paris Agreement, the then Executive Director of the UNFCCC, Yvo de Boer, stated that we'd have to shut down the world economy for two years to meet Paris targets. That's about what happened during COVID lockdowns, but it didn't get anyone closer to meeting Paris targets. So, perhaps governments will turn to enforcing a personal carbon ration on you, to meet targets. This has been proposed by various groups, most notably the "Deadline 2020" report by ARUP consultants to the C40 Cities group. Canadians have a personal carbon footprint of about 14 to 17 tCO2e (e = equivalent). Imagine trying to survive on a 2.9 tCO2e carbon ration by 2030 as ARUP recommends! Green Delusion Friends of Science 2024-11-07 | The province of Alberta is opposed to the Canadian federal government's intended cap on emissions. To try and explain to the Canadian public that a cap on emissions will also mean a reduction in billions of dollars of revenues for Canadians, and much higher costs, Alberta launched a $7 million ad campaign with the slogan "Scrap the Cap." To counter this, Caroline Brouillette, executive director of Climate Action Network (CAN-RAC) posted a cellphone stand-up video, wearing a ball cap embroidered with the word 'emissions.' "Emissions cap." Get it? In her video she denounced the Alberta government and Premier Danielle Smith, claiming that Brouillette didn't have $7 million for an ad campaign. In fact, CAN-RAC, Brouillette's organization, is an umbrella group over over 150 very LARGE organizations, unions, faith groups, ENGOs, that has received juicy grants from organizations like the McConnell Foundation. The 'emissions cap' idea was launched at COP28 climate conference last year by the Trottier Family Foundation, which claims it funded most of the environmental groups that went there and in an article for Philanthropic Foundations of Canada titled "Good COP Bad COP - The Role of Philanthropy at COP 28" claimed that they were networking with very large climate activist foundations in the US. Some of these are part of what the US House Judiciary Committee calls the "climate cartel" that is waging a war on consumers. This video puts forward the view that we really need a cap on delusions - green delusions - and it reviews some of the fantasy plans that CAN-RAC has for spending billions of your tax dollars on climate ideology and impossible climate targets. Clearly, this large group of activists does not represent the interests of all Canadians; many of the members are tax-subsidized, but they are actively trying to limit or shut down tax paying industries. Suzuki Advocates for CBC Climate Emergency Propaganda Friends of Science 2024-10-29 | David Suzuki and 4 former broadcast colleagues have made public a letter they sent to CBC in May of 2023, demanding that CBC cover the climate emergency, like the emergency they say it is. David Suzuki famously once said that people are like maggots, defecating everywhere. He also faced humiliation in Australian where he went to preach the climate emergency gospel, only to have it revealed that he did not even know the names of the datasets used by climate scientists. The news of the letter to CBC was revealed by Seth Klein, author of "The Good War: Mobilizing Canada for the Climate Emergency" wherein he makes the case that we should have Wartime Measures like rationing. Seth is the lead of the "Climate Emergency Unit" - a project of the David Suzuki Institute, which is a non-profit and partner organization to the David Suzuki Foundation. Their 'plan' includes mandatory controls to force people into compliance on climate policy - and to flip our industrial might into one big government controlled factory for heat pumps, solar panels and EV busses. But is there a climate emergency? The 2409 page Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) AR6 report, Working Group I Physical Sciences, only mentions climate emergency and climate crisis once, each, in regard to media coverage. It seems that the highly politicized ~40 page Summary for Policymakers (SPM), which is edited line-by-line by a roomful of political delegates, is the source of the climate hysteria. It featured a 'son-of-hockey-stick' graph, showing a sharp rise in temperature, that curiously did not appear in the 2409 science report. Something's not right. CBC should be an impartial and independent source of news - not a propaganda outlet for climate hysteria. And environmental groups that are pushing hysterical claims are not creating a 'net public benefit' for Canada. Europe is on the brink of disaster Friends of Science 2024-10-27 | Europe has gone heavily into climate ideology and renewables, trying to reach climate targets. The result has been persistent degrowth and deindustrialization in most countries - notably Germany. Though Germany is still in the top ten manufacturing powers of the world, the lack of access to affordable gas and oil from Russia, due to the conflict in Ukraine, and the effort to reduce emissions by highly subsidized wind and solar, have led to a sharp degrowth profile. In fact, it is now known as the 'sick man of Europe.' Michael A. Arouet often posts graphs on X/Twitter - recently he posted a graph showing Canada's radical decline in Purchasing Power Parity compared to the USA since 2015 - asking the question, "What happened in Canada in 2015? Did they join the European Union?" In fact, in 2015, Canada signed on to the Paris Agreement, and like Europe, Canada set about trying to reach unattainable climate targets - leading to degrowth, disinvestment, and deindustrialization. Canadians need to learn lessons from Europe - and Robert Lyman has written a plain language report based on Prof. Samuel Furfari's critique of a "European Competitiveness" report by former banker and Italian Prime Minister, Mario Draghi. Furfari is a geopolitical energy expert and his critique of the Draghi report - particularly its focus on green energy and 'sustainable' initiatives - should give food for thought to all Canadians. Eng.This is a recording of our Oct. 1, 2024 live event. For over a century, the three pillars of the electrical power grid have been reliability, affordability and security of supply. Today, security of supply has been switched out for Sustainability, more commonly known as “Net Zero.” Conventional, dispatchable power from coal, natural gas, hydro or nuclear is being rejected on the basis of emissions – direct or indirect, while non-dispatchable, non-emitting sources of power, like wind and solar are slated to replace coal, and presumably natural gas one day. Today wind and solar are promoted as ‘free’ energy. Advocates tout them as cheaper than their conventional energy cousins. Where conventional power plants take decades and billions of dollars to build, wind and solar farms can be installed within a year or two for a few hundred million. The wind/solar grid reliability is planned to be supported by grid scale batteries and interties with other regions.In addition to that, to remove fossil fuel emissions from home heating and transportation, the idea is to ‘electrify’ everything.That’s the vision of Net Zero electricity. How realistic is it?Randy Stubbings has 40 years of experience working as a Professional Engineer in the Alberta electricity industry. He discusses the challenges of Net Zero electricity and the trade-offs of the three pillars, which he likens to the three legs of a stool. Big Switch or Magical Thinking? Friends of Science 2024-09-25 | The Canadian Climate Institute has issued a report called "The Big Switch" about transforming our future power grid in line with Net Zero goals. Most recently they've been tweeting that people would SAVE 12% on energy bills by 2050 with such a transition....though, believe it or not, in their report, The Big Switch, they claim we will have to double or triple our power grid over the next 25-30 years! Does it seem likely? First of all, it took us 100 years to build out the power grid of today - can we double or triple it in a couple of decades? Secondly, infrastructure costs a LOT of money. How can this result in lower prices. We review a competing commentary by the Alberta Utilities Commission which commissioned 2 expert reports on the Net Zero transition and impacts to Alberta's power grid. The executive summary points that we present seem to suggest the opposite reality of that presented by the Canadian Climate Institute. It should be known that the Canadian Climate Institute is not really an independent think tank, but is a Canadian charity, 75% funded by the federal government. Summer Vacation Climate Criminals Repent Friends of Science 2024-09-19 | Are you one of those climate criminals who put your kids in a hot car and dragged them off on a 10 day road trip? Don't you know you caused the planet to burst into flames? At least, that's what Minister Mark Holland tried to tell Canadians! Maybe time to check the references and see what impact Canadians are having on climate change...and what are the costs associated with trying to save the planet from global boiling. Here we refer to three reports by Robert Lyman, retired energy economist and former public servant of 27 years, 10 years a diplomat. Lyman has done an assessment of "What is Climate Policy Costing Canadians?" He's also looked at the Contract for Difference (CfD) arrangements which he calls "Turning Taxpayers into Risktakers." And he addresses the "Burdensome Ideology of Climate Regulations" which are slated to cost Canada between $2 trillion to $5 trillion to reach NetZero. What does that cost each one of us? And what would be the results if we spent all that money - would we stop global boiling? No! Robert Lyman's fourth report "At Last! The Costs and Benefits of Canada's Climate Plan" shows that we could only expect to reduce global warming by 0.007 degrees Celsius by 2100, IF we met all of our climate targets, which seems highly unlikely. Mass Timber, Low Carbon, High Fire Risk Friends of Science 2024-08-28 | Proponents of 'climate friendly' new housing construction have been pushing 'mass timber' as a low-carbon alternative to cement and steel on the theory that wood 'locks in' carbon dioxide, and that this form of engineered wood is better than cement and steel, which are carbon intensive in production and difficult/impossible to recycle. A report came out in June, published by The Transition Accelerator, called "The Mass Timber Roadmap." By the way, Transition Accelerator is a registered Canadian 'charity' that has never received a donation for which a receipt should be issued, over the past five years of reporting (according to the CRA and Parker Gallant). The Transition Accelerator report advocated for reducing fire and building codes or other restrictions so that mass timber could be used for more projects. Shortly after that, the City of Vancouver approved mass timber building construction of 18 storeys, and a city building officer said he was not concerned about fire risk, stating that he thought mass timber buildings were more resistant to fire, and he knew of no mass timber building that had ever burned down. On Aug. 6, 2024, a six storey mass timber construction project in Vancouver burned down in a spectacular fire that nearly engulfed eight houses and that lofted burning matter 1.5 km away into Pacific Spirit Park. This video discusses the problem of 'cribbing' when it comes to mass timber construction, and the fact that public policies are being skewed by "Net Zero" urgency. Policies like these are putting the public at risk. Dr. Ross McKitrick, in a recent Fraser Institute report has shown that even if Canada met its emissions reductions targets, global warming would only be reduced by 0.007 degrees Celsius by 2100 (that's seven thousandths of a degree Celsius - immeasurable!). Environmental Groups Exploit Jasper Wildfire Friends of Science 2024-08-22 | In the wake of the Jasper wildfire, some 80 environmental non-governmental organizations (ENGOs), many of them registered 'charities,' issued and open letter to federal and provincial government leaders. The letter blames "Big Oil and Gas" for the Jasper wildfire and the proponents offer four pillars of evidence: 1) a non-peer reviewed paper on wildfires that mentioned climate change, but never mentions budworm or Mountain Pine Beetle, the principle cause of all the deadwood which amplified wildfires in 2023; 2) a paper in a pay-for-play journal by a group of scientists mostly associated with a climate activist group, the Union of Concerned Scientists. This paper claimed the 88 Big Oil and Cement companies had caused Vapour Pressure Deficit to change, causing more intense fires; in reality, VPD is affected by Sea Surface Temperatures which are driven by El Nino and La Nina cycles; 3) information from Climate Atlas which uses the implausible scenario known as RCP8.5 - calling it 'business-as-usual' as a future forecast of warming. Climate Atlas cites wildfire expert Mike Flanagan who notes that human-caused wildfires are preventable, which is true. Since there are often more human-caused wildfires from accidents, negligence, fireworks, or arson, let's prevent them and stop blaming climate change! 4) An opinion poll...commissioned by a climate activist group. Opinion polls are meaningless when empirical data is required. So these 80 groups who signed on did not ask for more support for wildland fire fighters, or more water bombers, or more wildfire mitigation - they asked the governments to cap emissions on oil and gas and ultimately shut down the main industries that bring in revenues for public services like healthcare. Thus, as many of the principals were named in the Tar Sands Campaign, it seems like 'Big-Oil-is-causing-wildfires-and-climate-change' is just a cover for the continuation of that Green Trade War. When will these 'charities' do something charitable - like donate some of their vast revenues to help the Jasper food bank, or civic services there; or call out to their vast support networks to offer human resources or materiel to rebuild Jasper when the time is right (for Jasper's reentry/rebuilding team). What is the 'net public benefit' of radical ENGOs who are tax subsidized through their 'charitable' status when they are just exploiting the tragedy of the Jasper wildfire as proxies for their funders? Eco Anxiety Friends of Science 2024-08-21 | CBC and the CAPE doctors are harping on about eco-anxiety; indeed, many people to feel dread or fear when thinking about future climate change. Why? Largely because climate hysteria has hyped all kinds of worst case scenarios. The people that CBC refer to in their story care so much about climate change that they flew halfway around the world to a climate conference in Sharm El Sheik, Egypt. So, are they eco-hypocrites? Looks like it. The CAPE doctors - Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment - are activist doctors. They are trying to get the Competition Bureau to prevent oil and gas companies from advertising; they claim oil and gas cause forest fires - not even the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Working Group I, Physical Sciences (AR6) report agrees with that. In British Columbia, the CAPE doctors are trying to get the Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) industry shut down, blaming all the health care problems on LNG!!! If you know anything about modern medicine, you'll know that it entirely relies on oil and gas for energy, for the creation of diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, for the making of pharmaceuticals, personal protective equipment like masks, gloves, visors, and for well-ventilated, sanitary surgical ORs with sterile one-use devices and bandages. To calm your nerves about climate change, consider reading two of Brian Fagan's books on climate. One is called "The Great Warming" and it covers the Medieval Warm Period of about 950-1100 AD. This was an 'optimum' where the warm weather led to abundant crops and civilization flourished. The second book is called "The Little Ice Age: How Climate Changed History" - and it is a terrifying look at what happens when temperatures cool a bit and weather becomes very erratic. Famines, frosts, and even mob mentality ruled as thousands of women were blamed for being witches who were 'Weather-cooking with the help of Satan.' Many of the comments of the time, echo the attacks of today against those who challenge the alleged 'consensus' view on climate. Scary! Once you see how climate changes so dramatically, perfectly naturally, you will probably feel a bit more at peace. Politicians can't stop climate change, no matter how much money they take from you! Conflations on Conflagrations - Jasper Tragedy Exploited by ENGOs Friends of Science 2024-08-06 | Canada's climate cult is once again putting their Magical Thinking about climate change and wildfires on a bandwagon. Some 80 ENGOs and health/civil society groups issued an open letter to federal and provincial leaders on July 31, 2024, in response to the tragic Jasper Park Wildfires. Are their demands for more water bombers? More wildland firefighters? More bucket scoopers and choppers? No! They just want the Canadian government to cap oil and gas emissions and block financing to fossil fuel producers. They want the oil and gas industry to be held accountable for wildfires that were started by lightning. They even include, in their evidence, a paper that claims oil and gas and cement companies (aka the "Big 88") made Vapour Pressure Density (VPD) (aka Hot-Windy-Dry) conditions enhanced, so wildfires are the fault of GHG emissions. In fact, VPD is transient and related diverse atmospheric conditions, but one main drivers is that of Sea Surface Temperatures (SST). SSTs are driven by El Nino/La Nina warm and cool phases of the Pacific Ocean, which in turn is related to ocean currents and subsea volcanic activity. These 80 ENGOs, many of them presently or formerly foreign-funded, have a vast network of collaborators, all of whom, strangely to 'end our collective dependence on fossil fuels'.... when it would be impossible to fight wildfires or evacuate without fossil fuels. When one looks at the world's largest producers of oil, Canada is number 4 and none of our competitor nations seem interested in phasing out their industry. So this looks like a new version of the old Tar Sands Campaign, a Green Trade War against Canada, all wrapped up in wildfire and climate rhetoric. July 20, 2024. No wind. Nowhere. Friends of Science 2024-08-02 | On July 20, 2024, Alberta's wind generation dropped right off. Out of 4,478 Mega Watts (MW) of wind capability, those billions of dollars of wind turbines were only generating 27 MW at the time this video was recorded. As Brian Zinchuk of Pipeline Online reported that week, Alberta's wind generation had even dropped to 1 MW and zero. Despite many climate activists and groups like Pembina Institute advocating for ever more wind and solar, when the wind drops 'dead' as it typically does when it is really hot, or really cold, and when solar power drops off due to cloudy skies or nighttime, Alberta needs reliable, affordable, conventional power to fill the void. Yellowknife Evacuation - Wildland Urban Interface Fires Friends of Science 2024-08-02 | We produced this explainer in 2023, to showcase the incredible community effort, by a handful of volunteers, with the help of local businesses and industry, to protect the city of Yellowknife from encroaching wildfires. In light of the destructive wildfires that swept through Jasper, many people are wondering 'What can I do?' to protect my home or community. We hope this video explainer will inspire hope and lead to constructive action for many Canadians, or people from other countries, whose cities/towns or homes are at risk of wildfire. Again, we hope that people stop blaming 'climate change' and diverting precious public funds to green crony 'climate' projects - instead of investing in needed wildfire protection actions and critical urban infrastructure. We hope people will adopt FireSmart/FireWise recommendations to protect their homes, communities and businesses. Jasper Wildfire - Not if...but When. Not Climate Change Friends of Science 2024-07-29 | Albertans and nature-lovers around the world were horrified when wildfires took off under extremely dry conditions and high winds, and burned through Jasper National Park and the Jasper townsite on July 21, 2024. Though the wildfires are still burning in the surrounding forest, most of the town of Jasper remains; about 30% of the structures were destroyed. A great controversy is raging in the press and on social media as to whether the cause of the fire is related to human-caused climate change, typically tied to the use of fossil fuels, or whether Parks Canada and Jasper National Park administrators (the Park is under federal jurisdiction) had tried too hard to prevent 'unnatural' interventions. Perhaps a focus on too much fire suppression (putting out small wildfires) rather than letting them burn? "Unnatural" interventions would include significant controlled burns or logging, to reduce the fuel load caused by decades of Mountain Pine Beetle infestations, which have killed 18 million hectares of forests in Alberta and British Columbia. As infested trees die, the drop branches and needles and flop over, creating huge amounts of 'fuel load' on the forest floor and 'ladders' up other trees. Fires that start on the floor can quickly become 'crown fires' by going up the ladder, and then in the wind, burning embers, also known as firebrands, carry the fire farther and farther away. In the case of Jasper, there were flaming pine cones being lofted far away during the worst part of the wildfire. This video explainer draws on the knowledge of forestry and wildfire experts and explains the issues, as well as many of the challenges of fighting wildfire. Even if you have thousands of wildland firefighters and water bombers, at some point, if the fire has become an inferno, you can only back off. Unfortunately, eco-activists make things worse when it comes to forest management. And it seems like the climate activist community, like the young people at "Last Generation," are trying to tie this disaster to Canada signing on to Tzeporah Berman's "Fossil Fuel Non-proliferation Treaty." Toronto Flooding - Climate Change or Infrastructure Deficit? Friends of Science 2024-07-26 | Toronto was hit with heavy rainfall July 16, 2024, which resulted in massive flooding. There have been several follow-up summer storms that have compounded the damage and chaos. Immediately, Prime Minister Trudeau and Mayor Olivia Chow made public statements that 'climate change' is to blame and they promised more 'climate action.' On X/Twitter, a number of commentators started advocating for a more 'spongy' city - meaning more green infrastructure like permeable driveway tiles, 'rain gardens,' more trees to soak up the water. But is it climate change or are Canadian cities facing a serious infrastructure deficit, especially in light of recent vast population growth. If infrastructure is failing cities now, what will happen with the federal housing plan to densify neighbourhoods. This video explainer is drawn from much of the work of Robert Muir, P. Eng., among other contributors. Muir has worked extensively in Ontario and has several papers and SlideShares showing that there is no identifiable change in precipitation, but urban flooding has increased with the growth of population, more paved surfaces, and less run-off areas. Likewise, ~100 year old sub-surface infrastructure designed for the city of yesteryear, with the limited knowledge then, is just not up to managing the demands of a growing city. Sadly, climate change is a 'sexy' topic that makes people feel like they heroes for 'saving the planet' while infrastructure below ground, that is never seen by the public, by contrast seems boring, methodical, and expensive to do right. However, it is the ESSENCE of a good, safe, healthy city. The risk after municipal disasters like this is that huge sums of money will be diverted to 'climate' and 'sponge' projects, and infrastructure will be ignored...again. This video explainer tries to illustrate these issues for the general public, in the hope that you can convince your city to spend the time and money on good infrastructure for your city, rather than wasting millions on 'spongy city' green fads or some miniscule emissions reduction plan.Please like, subscribe and share. 4 and 5 Year Sentences for Whole Truth Five Friends of Science 2024-07-22 | Social media is ablaze with conflicting comments about the Just Stop Oil protestors in the UK, now known as the "Whole Truth Five," who have been convicted of conspiracy to commit an intentional public nuisance, their actions resulting in massive traffic back-ups at key highway intersections near London, England. "Truth" comes from their Plan, wherein they claim that we are being lied to about climate and the 'scale of the climate crisis. Extinction Rebellion (XR) also has a motto of "Tell the Truth" (about climate change); one of the "Just Stop Oil" people sentenced to 5 years is Roger Hallam, founder of XR. People who support the actions of the "Whole Truth Five" claim that no one should go to jail for a Zoom call, or for non-violent civil disobedience, ignoring the significant consequences of the highway actions. People who support the judge in handing down stiff sentences are saying "it's about time." In this video we review some of the statements of the judge and discuss the impending activities that Last Generation, a similar Canadian climate activist group, say they plan to do this summer. We review some reasons why people think there is a climate emergency, and how this is based on misuse of some climate/socio-economic scenarios. We show that the climate emergency is over; we DO have time. Thus, there is no need for such eco-martyrdom. We also look at the funding behind these groups, showing that they are not simple 'grassroots' activities of a handful of citizens, but rather very well-funded, sophisticated campaigns. While these groups, many of which are richly funded by the Climate Emergency Fund, demand an end to the use of oil, it seems that none of them are eager to go to Africa for Jusper Machogu's "Sustainability Internships." His motto is "Just Stop Toil" and he hopes that he can educate some of these activists as to where their food comes from and why fossil fuels would be good for Africa. Today, we claim to be a 'climate leader' but Col. Redman disputes that as being just a niche interest; one which does not consider the larger national interests. Climate Hysteria Over Summer Heat Friends of Science 2024-07-20 | Headlines are blaring warnings about heat waves. Weather maps are colored bright, hot, lava red. What's going on? Is is climate change? Or is it....summer.Canada gets very few extremely hot days per year. Current and recent heat waves are not outside historical ranges. While higher temperatures than usual can pose a risk to vulnerable people like babies, the elderly, people on certain medications, there's no justification for the persistent hysteria in the media, especially not claims that heat is one of the greatest killers! And certainly, those claiming that a heat pump will save you are just being silly. You need a real furnace in a Canadian winter! In fact, it is cold (moderate + extreme) that kills 30 times more people than extreme heat; Bjorn Lomborg has shown that even nominally cold situations can cause mortality. Race for the Truth on Net Zero Friends of Science 2024-06-30 | There has been a recent change to the Competition Act in Canada via a couple of sections within Bill C-59 regarding statements made by any corporation regarding the efficacy of their efforts to mitigate climate change or reach Net Zero targets. Making false or misleading claims is known as 'greenwashing' and has been part of Competition Bureau legislation for a long time. "Greenwashing" refers to making claims that your company activities, policies or materials supply chain is somehow 'saving the planet'...when factually it is just a patina, not based on verifiable facts or reality. However, "Greenwashing" as per Bill C-59, is now stringently precluded and millions of dollars of penalties have been prescribed for violations, where before the Competition Bureau generally required a 'behavioral change' (i.e. modify the ad in question). Plus, before, the Competition Bureau had to prove YOU were wrong...now you have to prove you/your company is right! Likewise, now private individuals can bring charges or sue for civil action under the act. While environmental non-governmental organizations (ENGOs) openly cheered this legislation as a 'win' against Big Oil, and many oil companies immediately scrubbed their websites of climate or Net Zero material, in fact, every business in Canada is at risk of any aggrieved individual or climate action group deciding that 'you' are their targe of the day. An important point is that the legislation requires evaluation in accordance with an “internationally recognized methodology” standard ...which is not defined and is unclear. As this presentation shows, the ENGOs and climate activists, and the government, are misleading the public on climate and energy claims, particularly those about the so-called 'energy transition.' Youth Climate Corps Can Clean Up Forests! Friends of Science 2024-06-28 | A number of MPs have raised the idea that there should be a Youth Climate Corps. A National Observer article of Dec. 5th, 2023, suggests that proponents think the government should spent $1 billion to set up such a program. In the article, they suggest that such youth could 'manage the forest' and we think that's a great idea. Rather than parading around with signs, young people could be clearing away the low-hanging branches in forests and urban areas. and clearing out the flammable rubble on the forest floor. This type of mitigation work is essential to reducing the risk and spread of wildfires, especially near towns and cities, or in urban forests. Many young people think wildfires are caused by climate change, but they are mostly caused by the wildland-human interface; human-caused wildfires are more than 50% in many regions. So, mitigating the risk would be very important, and people always feel better about doing something constructive about a problem, rather than sitting and brooding about a non-existent climate emergency. Can we cut health care emissions in HALF by 2030? Friends of Science 2024-06-26 | Health care providers in Canada have a new thing - they can write you a "PaRx" prescription to encourage you to take 2 hours a week, 20 minutes at a time, in nature! While this sounds like a good idea, one wonders why they are doing this now? Have you been wait listed? Is it because, since COP26 in Glasgow, the global health care community has been trying to cut their sector's emissions in HALF by 2030? Well...no patients, no emissions. Think about it. The CAPE doctors (Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment), ked by Dr. Melissa Lem, are championing the PaRx cause of giving you a prescription to walk in Mother Nature. That's a low-carbon treatment, isn't it? They are also advocating for the phasing out of fossil fuels and fossil fuel advertising about the benefits of fossil fuels to society. Ironically, everything in modern medicine is entirely reliant on oil, natural gas and coal for the energy and product stream (like sterile plastics, medical implants, diagnostic/therapeutic equipment, and the power to run the hospital itself). Health care systems are now so 'climate addled' they are assessing the 'carbon footprint of frailty' - meaning that if you are elderly or have some chronic condition, some health care providers are looking at your carbon footprint as using up valuable resources and this defines you as a large emitter/energy user. That's very dangerous thinking! This kind of thinking pre-dated the Holocaust in Nazi Germany. Michael Crichton has written an essay about it in his book "State of Fear." How does this Net Zero healthcare thinking dove-tail with the climate cult's obsession with overpopulation and, in Canada, a push for ill people to accept Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD). PaRx Prescription for Climate Compliance Friends of Science 2024-06-25 | Have you been to the doctor lately? Did they give you a PaRx prescription for 2 hrs a week, 20 mins at a time outdoors in a park? The CAPE doctor behind the project, Dr. Melissa Lem, says there are health benefits, and there probably are...reportedly things like lowering blood pressure, lifting your mood, making you feel hopeful. Oddly, these are the very same people who are telling you every day that there is a climate crisis and "...we're all gonna die!" Climate doctors at CAPE are propagating the false information that human industrial emissions from fossil fuels cause wildfires and floods - not even the IPCC says that. So these medical professionals are psychologically scaring the public, while claiming a walk in the park will make you feel better. Health care organizations are pushing for NetZero health care - to cut health care emissions in HALF by 2030. But medical facilities, especially hospitals, are large users of energy, mostly because their HVAC and other intricate operational systems as well as their diagnostic equipment can't just be shut off without impacting how things work. Precision equipment would need recalibration. These CAPE doctors (Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment) are now trying to force a phase-out of fossil fuel advertising and fossil fuels, even though modern medicine is entirely reliant on the energy and byproducts of fossil fuels. They are propagating notions, expressed in the BMJ "NetZero Healthcare: Call for Clinician Action" to put things like solar panels on the roofs of hospitals, to incorporate EV ambulances...too save the planet. These impossible notions are being propagated worldwide. Do you want to go back to kitchen table surgery? Because, that's where this road leads. Do you really think your local hospital or medical clinic could run on HALF the energy it presently uses by 2030? What do you think the consequences would be for people who need care? Think about it. Show Your Stripes....Starting from When? Friends of Science 2024-06-19 | As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. And there's a 'heat dome' on the way for much of eastern North America - the perfect time for alarmists to amplify fears of global warming. Ironically, almost no one is talking about the other half of North America to the west, which is experiencing temperatures that have been single digits, far below seasonal norms. This last week of June 2024, social media will be flooded with special "Show Your Stripes" imagery, a set of blue stripes that turn to bright hot red as they go to the right across the screen. You may have seen T-shirts and merchandise with these - or more famously, the cover of Greta Thunberg's "The Climate Book." These are the temperature stripes, a kind of representational graph developed by Prof. Ed Hawkins of the University of Reading. There is a special web page where you can enter your coordinates and stripes image will be generated to 'show your stripes' of warming in your area of the world. However, as Prof. Ian Plimer says about this kind of imagery which is meant to illustrate proof of 'global warming,' ...since when? Depending on when the time sequence starts, this visual 'proof' of warming varies significantly. In this video, we look at a series of colorful graphs developed by our president, Ron Davison which show a very different set of stripes, showing that recent warming is nominal in context and is nothing unprecedented. While heat domes and heat waves can be difficult for some people to deal with, especially the elderly, the very young, and those with chronic health conditions, the guilt-inducing hype about human-caused global warming is leading to economically destruction policy decisions and causing psychological harm to children and young people. Molecule Madness - Counting CO2 Molecules is not in the Public Interest Friends of Science 2024-06-13 | This is a video explainer about an incoming set of financial and accounting standards that will be burdensome for corporations, costly to consumers (as all costs are passed on), and will accomplish nothing for the environment or climate, but will skew investment markets and open up lawfare from shareholders and climate activist groups. The Financial Reporting and Assurance Standards Canada (FRAS Sustainability) has offered a draft set of standards for public comment (which closed June 10, 2024). This is known as the Canadian Sustainability Disclosure Standards (CSDS) on Climate-related Disclosures. Friends of Science Society responded to a similar call for comments to the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) in June 2022. The Canadians standards are very similar. ISSB was invited by Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland to set up shop in Canada; she claimed the Charter Professional Accountants of Canada would help facilitate such an effort. The CPA's mandate is to protect the public interest. In the video explainer, you will see that the proposed tools to be used to report on climate-related risks to a corporation are not fit for purpose. The proposed elements to be accounted for are six greenhouse gases, throughout three Scopes of emissions (at the operation, indirect energy supply to the operation, downstream emissions related to the delivery and use of the product). These will be evaluated vis a vis their climate impact based on differing climate scenarios (typically the Representative Concentration Pathways of RCP 8.5, 6.0, 4.5, 2.0 or iterations of them). Those impacts will be calculated against the timing of the transition to Net Zero through four potential transition possibilities of disorderly, orderly, too little too late, or hot house world. As you can imagine, this will be a bonanza business for large accounting firms and a nightmare for large corporations - but they will have the money to hire environmental groups as consultants to do this work for them (costs may range from $100,000 to $400,000/yr). The purpose of the exercise is supposedly to show financial institutions and investors that the business has a Net Zero transition plan and is preparing for future climate disasters/impacts which may be revealed by this exercise - an exercise that uses climate models that are not fit for purpose! Though the idea is that this will be voluntary at first, and there are some exceptions in the rules, that in itself creates large openings for shareholder liability or climate activist lawsuits. The impact on Canadian society would be staggering - especially as many major energy projects or producers would be hard hit by these accounting regulations. There are additional regulations and bills being implemented now, such as Bill C-59 which does not allow a conventional fuel company to promote the benefits of its product or methods, and also Senator Rosa Galvez Bill S-243, which would restrict financing and insurance for such companies, due to the nature of the proposed rules. Municipal Tree Ponzi Friends of Science 2024-06-07 | Many of Canada's cities and town have streets or stands of beautiful mature trees, that taxpayers have underwritten for decades for the tending and tree maintenance, typically conducted by municipal urban forest specialists. However, lots of these trees are at risk due to the Housing Transition Accelerator funding, which requires blanket rezoning of cities. That means that many mature trees will be ripped out, willy nilly, in a race to build more housing - meaning a significant loss to the urban tree canopy, not to mention the wasting of hundreds of thousands of dollars of invested tax dollars. Not to worry though, Minister Jonathan Wilkinson announced on May 15, 2024 there is a new tree program with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities to plant 1.2 million trees, creating 2,000 jobs. In other words, more tax dollars for trees. Since the original Trudeau promise to Greta Thunberg to plant 2 billion trees has not materialized, why should we believe Wilkinson that 1.2 million trees will be planted? CBC's "The House" recently issued a scathing review of the federal tree planting plan, noting that the trees cannot be planted in the time frame or for the money allotted and that they won't reduce carbon dioxide emissions as forecast. We're hoping some citizen journalists will do a bit of digging on what appears to be a municipal tree ponzi scheme that's wasting tax dollars and enriching someone out there. Getting to Net Zero Friends of Science 2024-05-17 | Contributed by Ian Cameron, Director for Friends of Science Society ©2024The Canadian Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act, which became law on June 29, 2021, “enshrines in legislation Canada’s commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.” To date most of the federal government’s focus has been on its 2030 Paris Agreement target of reaching CO2eq emission reductions 40-45% below the 2005 level of 741 Mt (i.e., 2030 net emissions of 445-408 Mt).The government’s first attempt to determine what it would take to reach net-zero was a report released in December 2021 by the Canadian Energy Regulator (CER) called Canada’s Energy Future 2021: Energy Supply and Demand Projections to 2050 (EF2021). EF2021 did not explicitly model a net-zero future, which drew criticism and resulted in a directive from the Minister of Natural Resources to the CER to “provide even more data in line with Canada achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.” The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, “one of Canada’s leading progressive voices in public policy debates,” took note of EF2023 and commissioned David Hughes to use it as the basis for a report, released on February 8, 2024 and called Getting to Net-Zero in Canada – Scale of the problem, government projections and daunting challenges (full 64-page report and 6-page summary). This article in The Tyee quotes Mr. Hughes’ reason for writing Getting to Net-Zero: “My objective is to provide policymakers and the public with an understanding of the scale of the problem so they can appreciate the scale that any solution is going to have to take. Only with understanding and buy-in can the necessary changes be implemented.”CCPA's analysis was brutally realistic. As Mr. Hughes told The Tyee: “We are going to have to accept contraction, unfortunately. It has been a slice. But the math does not work for continuous growth.” In other words, getting to net-zero means an end to economic growth, let alone the 1.4%/year real GDP increase assumed in EF2023.To burnish their climate credentials the minister and his colleagues desperately want to issue press releases and pose for photo-ops showing tangible progress for the commercially useless Pathways Alliance project. What the ministers desperately don’t want is to tell the public that fulfilling their government’s net-zero agenda will entail a quarter century of ever more energy and economic deprivation.Here is a link to the full analysis by Ian Cameron, P. Building on Dreams Friends of Science 2024-05-13 | The federal government has a housing strategy which proposes to build some 3.9 million homes by 2031. Federal ministers have been shown walking through pre-fab home worksites, decked out in hardhats and photographed with hammers, but they also claim the housing plan will not use traditional building methods of the pat 100 years. And they claim construction will be low carbon! Like 3-D printed low-carbon concrete homes! Well, we did the math on low-carbon claims for housing, using an eco-friendly COP26 test model as the reference point, it turns out the carbon footprint would be enormous! "The COP26 test home folks say they could drop the normal 78 tonnes of CO2 embodied emissions (the emissions which are part and parcel of the construction materials and process), down to 32 tonnes using smart design strategies. That’s still 32 tCO2 x 3.9 million homes =124,800,000 tonnes of CO2e emissions. This doesn’t include infrastructure!" Big Green Debt Friends of Science 2024-05-11 | Canada's 2024 Federal Budget is out and lots of money is being applied to various projects and needs, but do people realize that our tax pool has dwindled, due to climate and green energy subsidies? Very substantial sums of tax dollars are diverted to the crop of 'green' Environmental Non-governmental Organizations (ENGOs), most of which are charities. This means that if someone donates to one of them, they get a tax receipt which allows them to pay less in taxes. It also means that the ENGOs agitate for more green projects, sometimes acting as proxies for their donors. It seems like ever since Earth Day was established, people have taken second place when it comes to tax dollars for important needs like health care, infrastructure, higher education and national defence. NetZero Nonsense & TulipOMania: Climate Policies have Consequences Friends of Science 2024-05-10 | Mark Carney spoke at a Canada2020 meeting offering a "Looking Ahead" talk on the economy. Curiously his presentation made many claims that all the leading economies in the world are moving to NetZero, but the evidence indicates otherwise. Michelle Stirling, Communications Manager for Friends of Science Society, discusses her impressions of his talk, and correlates NetZero and Climate Change hysteria to the historic 'bubble' known as "TulipOMania." This occurred in Holland in the 1600's when investors became enamoured with the tulip bulb and tulips, recently imported from Turkey. At the time, people lived in very sparse conditions; tulips were astoundingly beautiful and soon the trading in tulip bulbs became a mainstream obsession - to the point that people were buying and selling the 'offsets' of tulip bulbs that had not even been propagated yet. Perhaps NetZero products are facing such a fate - electric vehicles come to mind as does wind and solar. Friends of Science Society has three new reports of interest that challenge the premises of Mr. Carney's presentation - one by Robert Lyman list the recent climate spending in Canada's 2024 budget; another report by Robert Lyman looks at energy security issues in "A Multi-Polar World at Risk;" a third report is an summary analysis by Friends of Science Society's Ian Cameron, who looks at three reports that try to assess "Getting to NetZero" for Canada.
