The Ignatz flying pendulum clock was invented by Christian Clausen of Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1883.
In 1935, Dr. Rowell, a clock collector, named the clock after "Ignatz" the mouse, in the old Krazy Kat comic strip. Indeed, the movement of the pendulum conjures up an erratic mouse.
The pendulum swings 180 degrees about the pivot, spins around the exterior copper wire, rebounds, and unwinds. During this motion, the magnitude of the torque is reduced due to friction at the pivot. Now, the torque is large enough to spin the pendulum bob around the brass tube which is closer to the pivot but too small to reach the exterior copper wire.
