“Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted is a collection of classic and original mini-games set in the Five Nights universe. Survive terrifying encounters with your favorite killer animatronics in a collection of new and classic FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY’S™ experiences. “Where fantasy and fun come to life!””
After Ultimate Custom Night finished off the classic FNaF series, Scott reached out to a development team called Steel Wool Studios to make a new title, using a technology never before seen in the series - Virtual Reality. The idea of FNaF in VR had been talked about even in FNaF’s infancy, but seemed impossible because of the Clickteam engine being a 2D game engine. With the new partnership with Steel Wool, we also see the transition from Clickteam to Unreal Engine. Fully fledged 3D FNaF. Now VR was a possibility, and that was the focus of this new title, recreating old “scenarios” from past games into a VR title to re-experience them from a new perspective.
Now that FNaF is no longer restricted to pre-rendered 2D assets and can now utilise proper real-time 3D models, you can now see characters actually move in the environment. There were very few cases of this in the Clickteam series, like Foxy in FNaF 1, but proper 3D allows for basically any scenario you could want with the animatronics without having to make pre-rendered images for every scenario you want. This makes the experience much more immersive, and the addition of VR only enhances it further.
Now with it being a VR game, it of course is going to be naturally restricted only to platforms that actually have VR facilities, namely PC, PlayStation and Oculus. Luckily the good people over at Steel Wool later released a non-VR “flat” mode of the game, available to play on all major platforms, including Xbox and Nintendo Switch (and even mobile, although that is something else entirely). Of course the flat mode is not nearly as good as the VR mode, but it makes Help Wanted playable for anyone, so I’m glad it exists.
As for my personal thoughts of the game, I think it’s very mid, in a literal sense - the middle of the road on a tierlist. I don’t think the game is bad, but I also don’t see myself liking this game as much as any of the past games. It’s very likely that my experience was mitigated by the lack of VR, so I’ll eventually play this game in VR if I ever get the correct facilities.
Huge thanks to @Hariburger for exporting the entire video for me. This wouldn’t have come out without him.
