Airbnb, Uber, Reddit, Tinder, etc...Craigslist had it first. For every niche of Craigslist there is now a billion dollar unicorn startup.
For founders & entrepreneurs running internet technology startups, many have seen the following image. For those who are interested in founding a startup or perhaps work in one, they should see the following image. Something interesting has happened in the last 20 years.
The internet was born in the greatness that was the 90’s, and it was the decades that followed that has allowed the internet to evolve into what we have today.
The image above is of the front page of Craigslist, with an arrow pointing to a hyperlink that some startup has come to specialize in. Initially started as basically an email newsletter, the Craigslist website went live in ‘96 and is probably the oldest webpage worth noting that is still running today. Born in an age of unbounded optimism for the internet & what it could bring, Craigslist embodied the original decentralized, democratized vision of the internet - allowing anyone, anywhere, to make a post. Free of charge.
A common question among potential startup founders, or even serial founders, is “what should we make? what will we offer the world?”
Well, if you’re looking to create a marketplace, an easy answer is to check the image above & simply pick a hyperlink to build for. Each one of those links has spawned an internet company specializing in what it was offering, many of which have gone on to become billion-dollar enterprises (AirBnb, Uber, Github, Chegg, etc).Jesse left Nelk To Start “Sunday”…Genius or Stupid?RAISED2023-10-06 | Why did Jesse left Nelk to start Sunday, a company few even understand. When people think of Buzzfeed they are often reminded of their listicles such as 25 Ways To Tell You're A Kid Of The '90s or the try guy that cheated on his wife. What most people don't recall is their news division that was trying to have the editorial authority of the New York Times. Their first mistake was calling it Buzzfeed News. Sorry, but it's hard to take a news organization seriously when on the same site I can find riveting content such as this:
While Buzzfeed lacked a serious tone, they were experts on virality and easily digestible content. When they launched their news division in 2011, it was relying on one major assumption: legitimate journalism can be mixed with their traditional viral content formula. They believed that with this mixture they could challenge legacy media. So off they went, and hired an army of youthful, internet savvy reporters eager to break the next big story. Their audience was for the new generation that was getting their news from social media feeds instead of reading a newspaper or from a talking head on a cable news program.
Having needed to appeal to this younger audience, they would blend somewhat goofy and lighthearted questions to important figures while also sneaking in some legitimate groundbreaking journalism. They broke the internet for getting Barack Obama to use a selfie stick but they also won a Pulitzer prize reporting on China's mass detention of Muslims. By utilizing satellite imagery, architectural expertise, and interviews with two dozen former prisoners, they identified a vast new infrastructure built by the Chinese government for the mass detention of Uighurs. Yet their most popular video is about trying to steal food from a delivery robot…Buzzfeed News was all over the place, it seemed to have a lot of junk then randomly toss in something groundbreaking. Possibly their most notorious piece being the now discredited Steele dossier. This was a series of allegations of misconduct, conspiracy, and cooperation between Donald Trump's presidential campaign and the government of Russia prior to and during the 2016 election campaign. This provoked his response:
Turns out he was right, Buzzfeed was failing and On April 20, 2023, BuzzFeed announced it would shut down BuzzFeed News as part of a 15% workforce cut. Can’t Buy a House? Buy a Fraction of One InsteadRAISED2023-04-21 | Arrived, Fundrise, LoftyAi, these startups are reshaping real estate investing.
In the not-so-distant future, your landlord might be thousands of different people. Home ownership as we know it is shaping up to be a whole lot different and it's pretty concerning.
Various platforms, including Arrived, Fundrise, Lofty AI, and Landa all offer similar models of fragmented investing in different types of real estate markets. The popularity of fractional investing however has exploded as a passive income steam. Lofty AI sells fractional "property tokens" using cryptocurrency providing not only investment opportunities but also serves as a marketplace for home sellers.
Real estate investing has always been a key tool to building wealth and over the past couple of decades we've seen a dramatic rise of regular folks using the asset class beyond purchasing their own home. In the wake of the 2008 crisis and the now AirBnbust that many hosts are currently experiencing, it seems that the promise of real estate being a passive income stream for regular folks, hasn't always worked long-term. However, emerging start-ups backed by big names are challenging how retail investors approach real estate. The problem is that for retail investors, they are putting too much equity into one property and when things go south, they don't have the diversification to protect themselves. Another problem? Far too many people can't even afford one home. So how do these start-ups solve these problems?
Fractional Real Estate…
Fractional Real Estate is where you can buy a portion of a home instead of the entire thing. Depending on the platform, you could be a partial owner of a home for as little as a cup of coffee. Companies such as the Jeff Bezos backed, Arrived Homes, have raised over $76 million to purchase more than 200 properties. The company and its competitors all contend that what they offer is truly passive income, unlike other supposed "passive income" streams such as Airbnb that are a lot more work than you might think. With fractional real estate, the claim is that your investment is completely hands off as the management and fees of the properties are taken from your share of the rental income. The Apple Credit Card Nearly Destroyed A BankRAISED2023-04-07 | The Apple Card has been a multi- billion-dollar failure, but not for Apple…The one left holding the bag is actually their banking partner, Goldman Sachs. They have tarnished both their own reputation and Apple’s with this credit card. Goldman Sachs is now led by David Solomon, part banker, part professional DJ. No seriously…he is DJ D-Sol.
Their consumer bank called “Marcus” became a priority for the CEO but lately it has become apparent that Goldman and regular folks maybe just aren’t right for each other. Under this branch of consumer-focused products, Goldman launched “Platform Solutions” a fin-tech umbrella of services, including the Apple Credit Card. You might be thinking how did Goldman’s new consumer bank win such a potentially lucrative business from Apple, the largest tech company in the world…surely the big established consumer-focused banks such as JP Morgan Chase would be in a far better position to bid on this account. Well, it turns out in their desperation to enter the consumer-banking space, Goldman Sachs agreed to terms that were incredibly one-sided in Apple’s favor.
Now Apple has just launched “Pay Later.” A service where users can split purchases into four payments with zero interest and no fees. They are now directly competing against the other big “Buy Now, Pay Later” companies such as Klarna, Affirm and Afterpay. Unlike the Credit Card however Apple will be financially responsible for credit assessment and lending through a subsidiary called Apple Financing LLC. Goldman Sachs will still be involved in processing the back-end but they aren’t on the hook for this. #applepaylater #applecreditcardTech Addiction Is Ruining Your LifeRAISED2023-03-20 | Your tech attention span is awful from overstimulation.
