retainers are the storage units of the game, that and the chocobo saddlebag help you keep any item you find in FFXIV

but retainers also have the ability to go out into the world and bring tons of useful items!... sometimes

but dont be too harsh on them, maybe they would be more motivated if their pay wasn't exclusively in ventures
