Kohei Uchimura wins 2011 all-round artistic gymnastics world championships in Tokyo / media cheering

Sports Liberated 2021-03-10 | I attended the 2011 Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Tokyo just seven months after the tsunami had decimated the country on March 11 2011. Japanese gymnast and arguably the best male gymnast ever Kohei Uchimura was going for an historic third world all-round title in a row. This video shows his final routine, the high bar, on which he pretty much needed just to stay on to win. I was in the press box and had two Japanese journalists by my side so wanted to capture their reaction. Often journalists are quietly beavering away on their laptops, typing up stories, but here I loved that they downed tools and clapped and cheered all the way through. It wasn't really about the sport, it was about getting back to a sense of normality after such a horrific time, a moment where Japanese in the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium could forget about the stresses and devastation and just enjoy the moment. The local gymnast competing on home soil for such a prize was an absolute tonic to the people of this beautiful country and I think that is what is captured here.

Yeah, not sure what happened to 3D viewing – do people still watch that? But it was fascinating, and a privilege, to watch both men's and women's England v Argentina matches, head in to the studio, and then the Wizard-of-Oz style truck where all the magic happens.

Sports Liberated 2020-08-07 | Jo Gunston spent three weeks live blogging the Rio 2016 Olympic Games for Yahoo UK & Ireland. Initially anticipating a trip to Brazil, she quickly realised she'd be working from home, in a house she had bought with her boyfriend to do up. They hadn't got very far. With the time difference to Brazil, shifts were through the night, so Jo found herself a screaming and a hollering into the night in her Sheffield street with not a soul around. She absolutely bloody loved every minute... despite the crazy sport-focused dreams!

I recognised the privilege of a sports fan spending so much time in the now iconic stadium, even as it was still being put together around us as we rehearsed. I loved that place!

So the British Gymnastics Knockout Final 1988 took place at Chilton Trinity Sports and Leisure Centre in Bridgwater, Somerset. Teams taking part are Camberley Gymnastics Club, Heathrow Gymnastics Club and possibly Bulmershe Gymnastics Club (I've seen Graham Swatridge milling around in the background). Now don't get too excited those gymnasts from club's other than Camberley, as per previously mentioned in these videos, the battery life of video cameras in those days was about three minutes so we usually only took CGC gymnasts but you might see yourself in the background or an occasional snippet...

Sports Liberated 2020-03-31 | The Camberley Gymnastics Club International Invitational, which is now known as the Rosebowl and hosted at Rushmoor Gymnastics Academy, started life as the brainchild of CGC coaches Colin and Bernie Wright. Quite the achievement to get it to where it is today, inviting gymnasts from all over the world to take part in a two-day competition. This one is the 1985 apparatus finals. Sports Liberated 2020-03-18 | Remember when we all had to do the same routine and spectators (mostly our family to be fair) had to listen to that floor music over and over and over again! Well, I've captured it on video for posterity you lucky things.

The wind was a-whipping round the Alexander Stadium so the women struggled to gain decent heights but the event was eventually won by Sandi Morris. The Greek Rio Olympic gold medalist came second and she stopped to speak with Jo Gunston after the event.
