It was built in 1902–05 and is a replica of the Lourdes Grotto in France. The Grotta di Lourdes in the Vatican is smaller than the French original but is on an appropriate scale. Even the surroundings of the church have been replicated. The spire of the Grotto which was fairly tall, was accessed by two flights of stairs, one on each side. However, the spire was ordered to be demolished by Pius XI for reasons of safety. In 1962, the two side stairways up to the spire were also demolished on orders from Pope John XXIII. With this change, the Grotto became a simple structure with an evocative altar and a small statue of the Immaculate. Below this statue there is an inscription of Mary's message to young Bernadette Soubirous of the Immaculate Conception. #360videoCPAVM Presents: Vatican Museums Scientific Research Laboratory (360-degree 4K)CA and NW Patrons of the Arts Vatican Museums2021-10-29 | A 360-degree look inside "Il Gabinetto di Ricerche Scientifiche applicate ai Beni Culturali dei Musei Vaticani." It has always been the piece of ancient sculpture most admired by artists right down to the present day. The identity of the figure has been the subject of various interpretations through the centuries. The most favoured hypothesis presently identifies it as the Greek hero Ajax, son of Telamon, in the act of contemplating his suicide. The story is told how, during the Trojan Wars, Ajax is enraged when Achilles' armour is awarded to Odysseus and not himself, and kills himself. The iconography has been reconstructed thanks to various figurative signs: the head was leaning sadly towards the right hand which was gripping the sword with which the hero would take his own life. The sculpture dates from the 1st century B.C. and is signed by the Athenian sculptor Apollonios, an artist of the neo-Attic school, who was most probably inspired by a bronze from the first half of the 2nd century B.C.04. This area, which today holds many of the masterpieces of the Pio Clementino Museum, was once part of the loggia of the Palazzetto of Innocent VIII Cybo (1484-1492) in Belvedere. The walls were once covered with frescoes showing landscapes and cities and in the lunettes there were small cupids painted by Pinturicchio and his assistants which are still visible today. In the year 1771-1772 Clement XIV decided to include 1400s architecture in the museum he was setting up; the loggia was closed by walls with windows and at the end of the gallery the Hall of Busts was created. Between 1776 and 1778 Pius VI had the museum space extended towards the west entrusting the decoration of the vaulted ceiling of the new gallery to the painter Cristoforo Unterperger.CPAVM Inside Look: Gallery Of MapsCA and NW Patrons of the Arts Vatican Museums2021-02-04 | The California and Northwest Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums presents an inside look at one of our most ambitious restorations over the last thirty years. From modest beginnings, they rose to become one of the most wealthy and powerful families in Renaissance Italy. Not only bankers to Europe's most important rulers, they were also great patrons of the arts, supporting artists like Donatello, Brunelleschi, Botticelli, and Michelangelo. But the Medici were not art lovers for art's sake: they were communicating a precise and calculated message about status, about power, and about the importance of their family.CPAVM Exclusive: Raphaels Rooms (Part 02)CA and NW Patrons of the Arts Vatican Museums2020-07-08 | Join us as we gain insight behind the scenes of the Vatican Museums.
