Captured over the course of 2.5 years, this video is the culmination of hundreds of hours of work capturing Manchester from all angles. I would fit in the shooting around other work (and weather), with the aim to showcase the city in a way it hasn’t been seen before.
Some shots would be captured first time, others would require multiple visits to get the right light and weather conditions. From 4am alarms to capture sunrise, to late-night excursions on skyscraper rooftops. I utilised a variety of timelapse techniques, including motion-control, hyperlapses, and dronelapses.
The footage is available to license in 4k, with a small selection of the shots available in 8k. I’m also available for commissions, anything from short shots of city life to multi-year construction projects.
Huge thanks to Nick Rice for providing the music to this piece, you can find more of his work at soundcloud.com/nickrice More thanks goes to the various individuals and companies who allowed me to shoot from their premises – it really is appreciated.
Please note, the video can only be re-used when an appropriate license is obtained from myself. No two jobs are the same, and each comes with its own unique challenges.
I feel really blessed that I get to do what I love, each and every day. I can’t wait to see what the rest of 2018 has in store!

I love shooting sunsets, as timelapses reveal the way the colours change over the course of a few hours. Sure, you can see the way the colours change with the naked eye.. but it's hard enough to remember exactly what a scene looked like 10 minutes ago.

A few years ago I visited Iceland with a few friends. I had in the back of my mind that the only thing I cared about seeing, was the northern lights.
I didn't care if I had to stay up all night every night, I was going to drive around until I was able to experience them.. With some stroke of huge luck, we saw them on the first night. The initial displays were quite slow and tame, but still blew us away. Later in the night, we witnessed the most incredible display that I have ever seen. One minute you catch a glimpse of something in the sky, and you pull over hoping to see the lights. In as little as 30 seconds you can go from a clear sky, to views like above.
I cannot find the words to explain just how incredible it is to see the lights dancing overhead, slowly moving and twisting as they change. For us they would last a few minutes at a time, then disappear very quickly.
The thing with photography is that it often distorts reality and things look more impressive than they are. Not with the northern lights, the above video is how we saw it. Yet in reality, it's about 1000x more impressive..

I love rushing around trying to find new angles, looking for roofs to visit, or walkways to shoot from. I can be in the middle of a hectic city but still feel totally calm and relaxed.
It’s hard to really comprehend just how busy the roads of LA are, but take it from me.. they are packed! Which for photography is absolutely perfect.
As much as I love the business of the cities, I really appreciate getting away from them to the quiet solitude of the countryside. I’m not sure that I would ever be able to live in a huge city, but I definitely could live out in the middle of nowhere.

Within 5 minutes of driving into the city I had already fallen in love with the place. I think it was the architecture that captured my heart initially, quaint little houses perched all over the steep hillsides. But at the heart of that is a bustling metropolis, full of glass covered skyscrapers.
For a photographer it is a dream layout, the city offers endless vistas and ways in which you can capture the skyline. Every street you turn onto offers a new viewpoint and feel for the city. Rushing around the city at night trying to find these viewpoints is what I live for, yet I feel I could spend months shooting just that one city.

The first shot was from an unusual event called a moonbow. When there is a fine layer of mist in the air, the moons light refracts through it and creates a rainbow like pattern. However rather than being an arch, it creates a full circle around the moon.

After over two years of shooting timelapse professionally, I decided it was time to create a video highlight my favourite work to-date. The variety from job to job still surprises me, everything from football matches to year long construction projects. This video showcases the results of many sleepless nights, hundreds of thousands of photos, and countless hours shooting. I couldn’t even begin to calculate how many hours of work there will be showcased in this piece, but I imagine it’s into the hundreds, if not thousands of hours.
Shooting timelapse requires a lot of patience and forward thinking. Some shots took multiple attempts to get the right light, others required whole days just to capture a few seconds of footage. There’s a careful balance of trying to predict the future, and just being determined enough to do everything it takes to get the shot.
For example, the milkyway shot at 1:23 was the result of a four day shoot chasing the milkway in Wales. I stayed up every night, driving around trying to find clear patches in the night sky.. But in four days all I managed to capture was a sequence of 50 images.
Footage was collected in various locations around the world, and was shot for a variety of clientele. As such some footage is signed into exclusivity agreements; however other footage is available for licensing.
For the gear-heads, I used a combination of Canon 6D, 7D and 5D3 cameras with a selection of L lenses. The motion control shots were all powered by an emotimo.
The music is ‘All Or Nothing’ by Reaktor Productions.
During October I spent 8 days cycling 200 miles around London whilst carrying 22kg of camera gear. That week consisted of 3 main tasks. Lots of shooting, transferring photos onto the laptop, and a little bit of sleep. By the end of it I was physically drained - to the point where I thought I'd collapse on the final cycle back. Thankfully I didn't and managed to make it back in one piece. The raw result was 18,000 photos spanning 364 GB of harddrive space. Cue a few weeks of editing, and I managed to produce the final video.
Whenever I visit London I'm always surprised by the true 24/7 nature of the city; it really is a place that never sleeps. That was exactly what I wanted to capture, the 'hustle and bustle' of everyday life. Unfortunately the weather was true to English standards, and it rained pretty much every single day, forcing me to shoot at night.
For the tech-heads, I used a Canon 6D, 17-40 f4, 50mm 1.8, and a 70-200 f4. The motion control sequences were shot on a home built dolly, coupled to a emotimo TB3.
The video has been finished in 4K and is available for licensing. If you require any custom sequences, I'm also available to work on commissions. For any enquiries, please contact me at paul[a-t]paulrichardson.net
Special thanks to the team at Harvey Nichols, Oxo Tower harveynichols.com/oxo-tower-london) for letting me shoot from the restaurant. The opening shot was captured from their balcony.

I wanted to capture the dynamic nature of the city, and knew that timelapse would be the perfect medium. I think it's important to take a step back every now and again, and watch what is unfolding around you. Timelapse is the perfect excuse, you can spend anywhere from 5 minutes to 5 hours in a single location.
Over 100 hours of work went into this video, combining 20,000 photos over the course of 2 months. The video was shot across the city centre, with a small dash into Salford Quays.
Various techniques and equipment were used to capture the footage, including a home-built motion controlled dolly. The long sweeping moves were captured by moving the camera after each photo. This can be a very time consuming process, but the results are certainly worth it.
