It would be normal to assume when working with a completely factory stock engine that all of the parts inside are going to be the standard sizes as described in the service manual, but that assumption can get you in a lot of trouble.
Brand new blocks were often remachined after initial inspection to correct flaws. In the case of lifter bores, this can lead to major complications when it comes time to order parts and reassemble the engine.
Since we're in the process of choosing a cam and lifer package for our Project Sanford, super low budget 440 Mopar build, we figured this would be a good time to talk about this.
