The Captains of Illustration from Poland at the Taipei International Book Exhibition 2023 Culture.pl 2023-02-03 | The Captains of Illustration from Poland exhibition, prepared by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute in cooperation with the curator, Dr. Jacek Friedrich, presents a wide selection of illustrations from the publication of the same title, as well as works by Polish contemporary artists and illustrators. It was organised and produced in collaboration with the Book Institute, as Poland will be the guest of honour at this year's edition of the Taipei International Book Exhibition, staring on January 31st 2023. The works of Janusz Towpik, Bożena Truchanowska, Wiesław Majchrzak, Zbigniew Rychlicki, Adam Kilian and Andrzej Strumiłło, from the Polish school of illustration, were selected by Dr. Jacek Friedrich. The contemporary generation is represented by Jan Bajtlik, Monika Hanulak, Marianna Oklejak, Ola Cieślak, Aleksandra and Daniel Mizielińscy, and Piotr Socha.The exhibition was organised by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute as part of the international cultural programme marking the centenary of Poland’s regained independence. Flavours of Emigration: a culinary journey back to Mickiewiczs time in France Culture.pl 2023-01-05 | 2022 saw the bicentennial anniversary of the first edition of Adam Mickiewicz’s Ballades and Romances. To celebrate, the Adam Mickiewicz Institute launched the programme 44 x Mickiewicz, to support projects illustrating the ideas of Polish Romanticism as a crossing point for many cultures, opinions and art movements. And so the idea arose at the Museum of King Jan III's Palace in Wilanów, to approach this breakthrough moment in the history of Polish literature and culture from a slightly different angle, that is, through the favourite dishes of our Prophet-poet. Maciej Nowicki, a chef and a researcher of flavours of the past, normally working at the Museum of King Jan III's Palace, prepared a special menu inspired by Mickiewicz, the Great Emigration, Poland, and France. He is a constantly evolving soul and his visits to India to embrace Konnakol and Carnatic music, that evolved from ancient Hindu texts and traditions, impacted not only his understanding of rhythm but led him toward recognising how trance can affect the listener physically and emotionally.Projects such as his Undivided trio and the bands Emergency, The Light and Hera have given Wacław the space to explore the emotional power of jazz and improvisation, whilst his work with the Chicago-based saxophonist Ken Vandermark's band Resonance, and an invitation to perform at the city's innovative Umbrella Music Festival have played a part in expanding his audience. By his twenties he'd won competitions and awards and had a clarity about his intention for music-making. Piotr knows that at the same time as honouring the history of jazz, standing on the shoulders of these jazz originators, it is vital that jazz is a living, breathing music. He has released albums such as Bach Rewrite, in collaboration with Marcin Masecki, and Experiment: Penderecki, a tribute intended to renew the accomplished work of Krzysztof Penderecki. He has collaborated with musicians from Ecuador, Mexico and Spain and has played with significant artists such as the American composer, Philip Glass, as well as establishing his own High Definition Quartet. It is another beacon of the Polish arts, Adam Mickiewicz whose play, Dziady or the Forefather's Eve, that lit a fuse for Piotr and it's his album entitled, Dziady that he speaks about in this episode. Piotr outlines how he decided to differentiate between the earthly world and the supernatural in his music, and as well as the whole piece, 'Preparations', we hear an excerpt of the supernatural 'Little Angels' (with electronics by the renowned William Basinski). The history of jazz and the African American musicians, who created it, and Polish innovators from Chopin through Krzysztof Komeda and Niemen. His background in the '90s scene of sampling, rapping and beats music has blossomed into a sophisticated and authentic jazz that crosses boundaries. He is co-founder of the trio Night Marks, the avant garde improvised music collective Błoto and EABS (Electro-Acoustic Beat Sessions). Stories of his own ancestry, poetic symbols, philosophies and the expression of the complex emotion of being human run parallel to other incentives in his music. Podcast: REBEL SPIRITS - Joanna Duda Culture.pl 2022-12-05 | The newest episode of Rebel Spirits: the Story of Polish Jazz, features a pianist bridging the gap between baroque and electronics. To describe Joanna Duda as simply a pianist doesn't capture the extraordinary dimensions of the music she produces. Whether touching a broken keyboard, using the sound of a rewinding tape machine, or mixing in field recordings, her innate playfulness allows any instrument to blossom - you get a sense that one of her greatest strengths is to listen attentively to whatever she uses. Like many of the Rebel Spirits she is classically trained and has been influenced by both Baroque and minimalism. Part of her heritage is Chopin, of course, but it's also her parents' vinyl collection which included plenty of funk and jazz rock and there is often a groove that emerges in her work. Be it leading the duo J=J, her current trio with Michał Bryndal and Max Mucha, on drums and bass, or playing solo, there is an essence which is clearly Duda. Finding her flow with collaborators is always uppermost and she found that recently with French horn player Morris Kliphuis from the Netherlands. Their project Wake the Dead is for electronics, improvisation and a Baroque ensemble and premiers in October. But as a nine year old hardcore player, Kuba Więcek developed an affinity with repetitive practice and now feels the need for strategic thinking and fast decision making has stood him in good stead as a bandleader today. After a pivotal moment as a teenager, which he talks about in the interview, when he improvised on his saxophone for the first time, his 10 hour a day, video gaming habit switched to music study. Podcast: REBEL SPIRITS - Marcin Masecki Culture.pl 2022-11-24 | The newest episode of Rebel Spirits: the Story of Polish Jazz, features a pianist who cherishes all things imperfect.Marcin Masecki considers that he has two parents, jazz and classical music. As a pianist, he is steeped in the tradition of learning piano as a young child with all the purity and precision that comes with that. In this interview, you get the sense of how that triggered Marcin’s disruptive streak, and how that has been central to his approach to music. In his album 'Polonaises', Marcin combined this historical national dance of Poland with jazz and a bit of attitude, once again, bringing forward his appreciation of the defective and the unsettling. Joy & Devotion: The Polish Sacred Music Festival, 2nd Edition Culture.pl 2022-10-27 | Following its launch by the Adam Mickieiwcz Institute in 2021, the Joy and Devotion Festival returns with eight centuries of exquisite music performed by some of the finest UK choral ensembles – Polyphony, The Gesualdo Six and Rodolfus Choir.The series includes three richly programmed concerts in the glorious acoustic of St Martin-in-the-Fields. The Saw: An Animation Based on a Poem by Bolesław Leśmian [TURN SUBTITLES ON!] Culture.pl 2022-03-21 | Metaphysics meets horror as a teeth-screeching forest creature comes across (and falls in love with) a farmland boy in one of Bolesław Leśmian’s all-time classic poems. In our version of 'The Saw' (Piła) by Bolesław Leśmian, one of the greatest Polish poets of the 20th century, we decided to feature the original Polish text of the poem (with aural interpretation by Katarzyna Walczak) in order to highlight the rhythmic, musical and sonorous qualities of Leśmian’s poetic art. The English version of the poem in the subtitles is provided courtesy of Marian Chlabicz-Polak, one of the most accomplished translators of Leśmian’s challenging work into English.We believe that our video can be part of a wider discussion on the perceived problem of the (un)translatability of Bolesław Leśmian into other languages, as well as other media. We also hope it a diverting introduction to the incredible world of Polish poetry, with its rich tradition stretching from Jan Kochanowski and Adam Mickiewicz, to Bolesław Leśmian and Nobel Prize-winners Wisława Szymborska and Czesław Miłosz, and beyond. ‘The Akerman Steppe’ by Adam Mickiewicz – Animation Culture.pl 2021-08-10 | This animation is based on a sonnet created by Adam Mickiewicz in the summer of 1825. The famed poet had just visited Akerman, a district town of Bessarabia on the banks of the Dniester estuary, and its haunting surrounding area. The resulting ‘The Akerman Steppe’ became the introduction – and the key – to his collection The Crimean Sonnets, published a little later, after Mickiewicz’s trip to Crimea. Film zawiera sceny, które mogą być nieodpowiednie dla widzów poniżej 18 roku życia.Historię przedstawioną w tym filmie opublikował pionier polskiej etnografii, Oskar Kolberg, w 1874 roku. Podobne opowieści krążyły w całej Polsce, choć nie dotyczyły wyłącznie wątroby, ale też np. nerek. Makabryczne bajki ludowe były bardzo popularne – czasem miały wymiar moralizatorski, ale opowiadano je też w czasie nocnych czuwań, aby nastraszyć słuchaczy i zniechęcić ich do snu. Motyw "chodzących zmarłych" był powszechny w polskim folklorze. Tadeusz Jedynak – skrzypek z Przystałowic Małych Culture.pl 2020-10-29 | Tadeusz Jedynak (1923–2020) zdolności muzyczne od dziecka,grał na niewielkich skrzypcach wykonanych przez jego ojca. Prawdziwą naukę rozpoczął dość późno, będąc nastolatkiem – najpierw praktykował u Franciszka Pańczaka, ale jego największym nauczycielem był legendarny Jan Bogusz z Kamiennej Woli. Szybko stał się jednym z najbardziej rozchwytywanych muzykantów, grywał na zabawach i weselach. Po zakończeniu II wojny światowej wyjechał do Łodzi, gdzie mieszkał w latach 1946–1960 – porzucił wtedy muzykowanie. Do gry wrócił dopiero w latach 80., zachęcony przez Andrzeja Bieńkowskiego, który usłyszał jego grę podczas swoich badań etnomuzykologicznych na Radomszczyznie. Grywał z Janem Gacą, Józefem Kądzielą, Stanisławem Budziszem i Władysławem Kowalskim. Był dwukrotnym laureatem Złotej Baszty na Festiwalu Kapel i Śpiewaków w Kazimierzu Dolnym, w 1994 roku otrzymał Nagrodę im. Oskara Kolberga.Film został nagrany w styczniu 2014 roku w Przystałowicach Małych, podczas benefisu zorganizowanego w 90. urodziny Tadeusza Jedynaka.
