MGM Hey-Hey Fever (35mm) Restoration Not An Animation Historian 2026-05-23 | Here's a look at the restoration and color graded 35mm scan of Hey-Hey Fever (1935). This was the last appearance of the original Bosko design. The redesigned character would debut later in the same year in the film Run, Sheep, Run (1935). This was also the last film to use two-color technicolor (all colors based on red and green). I used the laserdisc release at the model for color grading. The film was never released to theaters, and therefore not seen by a wide audience until 2000 (71 years later) on Cartoon Network's television special Toonheads: The Lost Cartoons.
Bosko Fox Hunt (1931) 35mm Restoration Not An Animation Historian 2026-04-25 | This restoration of Bosko's Fox Hunt (1931) was assembled from two 35mm film scans from the LOC (courtesy of Jerico), neither of which survived in complete condition. Both prints had multiple splices and damage throughout, but together they contained enough usable material to reconstruct the complete film.After joining the two scans together, grading was then applied to both sources prints independently so that they match visually — minimizing any perceptible transition between sources. The combined picture was then cleaned.On the soundtrack side, the two optical tracks were similarly mismatched and required merging into a single audio element. Adjusted were made so that the two sources blend as seamlessly as possible. For the most significant splice damage — where the audio gap was too severe to bridge — a replacement soundtrack from tertiary print was used to fill those sections.This will be released on the (In)complete Bosko Vol 3 soon!

Alice Solves the Puzzle Censored Scenes (35mm Scan) Not An Animation Historian 2025-11-16 | This is from 'Alice Solves a Puzzle' (1925) - the first appearance of Pete & one of the first animated films heavily censored in the US. Compared to the US censored version. These scenes were deleted from all U.S. prints and the order of the scenes were rearranged for continuity, but the full film survived in a German archive. The story comes from Russell Merritt's research. Pennsylvania's Censorship Board demanded cuts before the 1925 release. Disney complied & anticipating similar objections, removed the scenes from all American prints. She-Ra 35mm Work Print vs TV/DVD Print Not An Animation Historian 2025-06-28 | For this I did some grading work on the 35mm, mainly to balance the colors and make it comparable to the DVD print. So why does 35mm film look different from TV broadcast prints in characteristic ways?The main culprit is broadcast standards and limitations of the time. TV systems like NTSC have much narrower color ranges than what film can capture. Colors that looked vibrant on 35mm had to be "crushed" into TV's smaller color space, causing shifts in hue and saturation. Plus, 1980s TV monitors couldn't handle film's full contrast range. The 35mm represents the original intent, while the TV version is the final product plus the technical compromises needed for broadcast.#She-Ra #35mm #animation #cartoon
