Derek HuggerThis is an updated render of The Ball Machine. The balls are a little easier to see in this version than the old render.
The Ball Machine is a music animation inspired by Animusic. The difference between Animusic's animations and mine is that I don't have software to calculate all the keyframes for me. Everything in my animations is done "by hand."
This animation took about 300 hours and was created using 3ds Max, GarageBand, Photoshop, and iMovie.
The music is original and was written by Dan Holbrook and myself (Derek Hugger).

Halo is a spring-powered, fully mechanical, wooden marble machine. Give the winder a spin, and step back to watch a group of marbles flow one-by-one down two unique sets of wooden tracks. To aid in the marbles' journey, Halo's marble lift mechanism is based on the physics of eddy currents, allowing a simple magnetic mechanism to silently limit the speed of Halo's lift ring and allow each marble to effortlessly travel up to the top of the tracks at a near-constant speed.MechaniCoasters - tabletop kinetic sculpturesDerek Hugger2020-04-23 | Make your own! Woodworking plans are available at http://www.derekhugger.com/coasters.html
MechaniCoasters are minature tabletop kinetic sculptures that keep rings off of tables and add a touch of fun to putting down a drink. Each coaster has a different mechanical movement, and each one is easy to build.
Gyres are the perfect introduction to kinetic art. They are simple wooden kinetic sculptures that are quick and easy to build. With a spin of a Gyre's wheel, its moving patterns come to life. Choose from a nautilus, a turtle, a snail, or build all three.

Carapace is a wooden kinetic sculpture that simulates the motion of a sea turtle swimming. A complex series of mechanisms allows Carapace to swim up and down, tilt forward or back, and even lift its head up for a breath of air. As each mechanism is carefully linked to the next, each of Carapace's flowing motions are driven by turning a single crank.
Cepheid is a wooden kinetic sculpture named after pulsating stars. Its curvy, ray-like forms slice and meld into each other as they spin and rock in a seemingly random motion. As Cepheid is set into motion by its spring and magnetic escapement mechanism, it creates a unique visual display of dancing shapes and mesmerizing patterns.
Zybach is a simple and easy to build weight driven wooden gear clock. Its circular forms are reminiscent of crop circles, giving the clock its name. It's named after Frank Zybach, inventor of the center pivot irrigation system, which revolutionized farming in the mid 1900s.Colibri: an organic motion sculptureDerek Hugger2015-10-06 | Make your own! Woodworking plans are available at http://www.derekhugger.com/colibri.html
Colibri is a wooden kinetic sculpture that simulates the motion of a hummingbird in flight. Every element of motion has been completely mechanized, from the beating wings to the flaring tail. Intricate systems of linkages and cams bring the sculpture to life with a continuous flow of meticulously timed articulations. As each mechanism has been linked to the next, Colibri cycles through its complete range of motions by the simple turn of a crank.
This project is my eighth woodworking design project and is by far the most complex project I've done so far. From start to finish, Colibri took me about 700 hours.

If you want one for yourself, plans are available on my website: http://www.derekhugger.comWooden Mechanism TestingDerek Hugger2015-01-14 | This video shows my mechanism machine, "Contrivance," as I was building it.
Woodworking plans that include patterns and assembly instructions for all the crazy stuff shown in the video are available at my website: http://www.derekhugger.com
For the knowledge collectors out there, I've worked out and documented the math governing the motion of some of the mechanisms. Contrivance is a wooden modular mechanism machine. Plans for Contrivance include patterns and assembly instructions for: three different size spur gears, elliptical gears, kooky gears, a geneva wheel, a linkage, a scotch yoke, a ratchet, a hypocycloid reducer, and a tourbillon.

Merlot is a kinetic wooden sculpture that creates a mesmerizing kaleidoscopic effect. In one orientation, Merlot’s forms create an array of stemless wine glasses. Rotate those forms 180 degrees, and smaller, stemmed wine glasses appear. Fully wound, this elegantly engineered sculpture will dance for hours at a time.Kinestrata - A Mechanical Wooden Marble MachineDerek Hugger2014-01-26 | Woodworking plans available at http://www.derekhugger.com
Kinestrata, whose roots mean, "motion layers," is an fully mechanical, wall mounted, wooden marble machine. Via geared Lifter Rings, half inch stainless steel balls are carried from the bottom of Kinestrata up to the top, where they are released to roll down one of four unique tracks. As the balls race down, they choose tracks that curve, drop, zigzag, and chime. Upon reaching the tracks' end, they are plucked by the Lifter Rings once again as they restart their journey.Fescue - A Balancing Wooden SculptureDerek Hugger2014-01-26 | Woodworking plans available at http://www.derekhugger.com
Fescue is an elegantly simple wooden kinetic sculpture that has been carefully balanced. It rests in a static state, but when given a push, it spins and tumbles in a seemingly random and chaotic motion until it again reaches equilibrium and comes to rest. With its low part count and straightforward design, Fescue is the perfect weekend project.Annulation - A Kinetic Wooden SculptureDerek Hugger2014-01-25 | Woodworking plans for Annulation are available at http://www.derekhugger.com
Annulation is a wooden kinetic sculpture that is captivating at rest and mezmorizing in motion. Its rings create an organic illlusion of growth and decline as they sway and gyrate. Each moving element of Annulation was designed to be perfectly balanced, both physically and visually.Annulation, a Kinetic Wooden SculptureDerek Hugger2013-08-03 | Annulation is a sculpture that is captivating at rest and mezmorizing in motion. This video is similar to Animusic's animated video tracks. However, my track was created without the aid of their special proprietary software. It was built from scratch and animated note for note. My video features a number of 3D animated Segway HT parts (wheels, motors, gearboxes, parking stands, etc.) autonomously playing music.
