Late flowering perennials to add some early Autumn colour to your cottage garden 🍁 Dainty Diaries 2023-09-03 | This time of year, you might have gaps in your garden borders as the Summer flowers start to fade. Adding some late flowering plants is a great way to prolong the growing season well into October and even up to the first frost. Let me share some of my favourite plants to add colour and interest to your garden for September. The plants I have picked are all perennial, and once looked after, they will return next year. Chrysanthemums:Popular in Autumn pots, door decor and cut flower bouquets. Chrysanthemum flowers in Autumn, but most of them are not frost-hardy, and you will need to store them over Winter. Some people continue to grow them indoors as a house plant in Winter. Regular deadheading will keep them flowering into Late October /Early November. Echinacea ( purpurea mix and sombrero yellow) Commonly known as coneflowers, the flowers are long-lived, excellent for cutting, and extremely attractive to pollinators. The plant is frost-hardy and will return each year. You can divide the plant in March/April to create more. I love to leave the seed heads on them over Winter for the birds to enjoy. Heliopsis is also known as false sunflower because it resembles a sunflower but is not part of the sunflower family. A hardy perennial plant that will tolerate poor soils, they like full sun but can take a semi-shaded spot.Most sunflowers are annuals with only one growing season, so these are a nice alternative. Heuchera (Plum Pudding ) are great at the edge of a pot or edge of a garden border and will fill out any gaps you have with their foliage. Most Heuchera are evergreen, and they will thrive in a shady spot. They flower in Spring to early Summer, but most people grow them for their impressive foliage. They come in various colours, from plums to rust and greens. Helenium ( strawberry sundae): Also known as sneezeweeds, these flowers like plenty of water and sun to thrive. You may need to stake them if they get too tall. Deadhead to prolong the flowering. These are also perfect for cut flower bouquets. Rudbeckia (Little Gold Star, Goldstrum, American gold rush) ) Also known as a coneflower or Black Eyed Susan. These flowers like the sun; they won't flower as well in the shade and will wilt in a dry Summer. Their seedheads look nice over Winter and provide food for birds and shelter for insects. Verbena ( bonariensis lollipop ) A great flower to add height to a border, you often find butterflies sitting on the flowers. Create a mini budget kitchen garden in the cottage garden 🌿 using palette collars Dainty Diaries 2023-08-13 | Growing your own herbs is a fantastic way to ensure that you always have fresh herbs on hand and save money in the supermarket. Whether you begin from seed or purchase pre-grown plants, you can harvest what you need whenever you need it. In this video, I will use a small wooden palette collar to create a raised bed for planting herbs and building a miniature kitchen garden in my cottage garden. Mix in some horticultural grit to the soil when planting. Both herbs can add flavour to roasted meats and vegetables to soups and stews.Parsely Parsley is a biennial herb ( annual in Ireland ); it doesn't tolerate frost, so best to move it into a porch or sheltered area during the Winter months. They are commonly used as a garnish or flavour enhancer in cooking. SageCommonly used in cooking and paired with chicken, pork or fish and soups. Sage has also been found to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, making it a popular ingredient in natural remedies and health supplements.Rocket saladRocket is an annual plant with one growing season, easy to grow from seed and takes around 40 - 50 days to grow from seed to harvest.ChivesA member of the onion family, they grow back each year and have a lovely purple flower that the bees love. Mild onion-like taste and is often used to garnish soups and salads. Apple mint It can be invasive, so best to grow it in a container or pot. It makes a lovely tea or is great with a cocktail and is known to aid digestion. Scented mint geranium ( Pelargonium Lady Diana): Nice alternative to mint as less invasive. The leaves can be used t make tea or in a mojito, and the flowers are also edible. Immortelle ( also known as curry plant)It is often used in skincare products for its anti-ageing properties and essential oils. The leaves can be used to add flavour to soups and curries and even used to make tea. What is a palette collar?A palette collar is a wooden frame that can be stacked and has hinges in all four corners. It is commonly placed on top of a pallet, creating a box that can be used for shipping items.You can stack them on top of each other to create tall, multi-level containers, usually made from either wood or plastic.These are popular in gardens because they are great for creating a raised bed on a budget. Summer Garden Refresh: Vibrant Colors and Beautiful Cut Flowers | Cottage Garden Vlog 🪴 Dainty Diaries 2023-06-18 | Hey there! I'm excited to share this week's cottage garden vlog with you. I've been busy refreshing my containers and pots with vibrant Summer colours - think bright oranges and terracotta shades. But that's not all - I also cleared out one of my raised beds to make room for gorgeous cut flowers. I planted Zinnias I grew from seed, along with some cosmos and dahlias. Easy sew outdoor lounge cushion from an old blanket! & upcycle workshop 🧵 Dainty Diaries 2023-06-15 | In this week's video, I am sharing how to make an easy-sew outdoor lounge cushion that has handles and can be folded and used as a picnic cushion and a lounger for your outdoor chairs. Perfect sewing project for beginners. The great thing about this project is that I used a recycled blanket to create my lounger, and I originally got this quilted blanket in Pennies. So, if you have old blankets, then give this a try. I had the pleasure of attending Joanne Condon's book launch and was delighted to be part of a super fun mini-upcycle workshop.
