At that time you couldn’t purchase a ready made one so I just designed my own, it was designed to fit a classic hakko soldering iron heater because back then I was still owning an old hakko clone soldering stations and I used it once or twice, it’s not something that I need very often because I don’t do a lot of functional 3D printing, I mostly do validation of enclosures with my 3D printer but when you need it you need. And so I need a few weeks back to place some threaded inserts into a 3D print, however since I don’t have any more of those old style hako 936 soldering stations I couldn’t use this, I’m all JBC and JBC clones these days.So I went on Aliexpress and interest enough, there are plenty of options right now, like this kid which comes with various size tool heads for dealing with various size threaded inserts and there is a selection of bundle kits that include a soldering iron model or you can get a cheap one like I did here, separately.So the idea is that you would remove the soldering iron tip from this and you install your threaded insert tool, and seems that I got my choice right, this fits just nicely and now I can adjust my temperature with his manual dial, you don't really need to go fancy with digital control for threaded inserts, just ballpark temperature setting will do fineI’ll start showing my next item by showing the box it came with and a picture of the item because the actual item is now installed in my car. I’ll follow up with some sample video but first a bit of background. I have this RCD330 media player in my VW Golf and this supports Apple Carplay via USB wired connection. That’s great because I can play my music and view Waze or Google Maps directly on its 7 inch screen.

It has been really helpful keeping the nasty soldering fumes away from my lungs and I highly recommend you get yourself some type of filtration if you do even occasional soldering for more than 15-20 minutes per session. I’ve been quite happy with my system because it wasn’t too expensive at the time of purchase, it ended up costing half of what a commercial system would have been and replacing the filters on this thing would be much cheaper also when compared to a commercial system. But in today's video I have received for review of such a commercial system and I would like to compare if it’s still a viable option to DIY or should you just buy one and save your time.One mention that I would like to make is that the commercial system we are looking at, is not directly intended for solder fumes extraction so it doesn’t come with accessories tailored to that, but in terms of filtration capability it should be adequate.The unit we are looking at today was sent in for free from Vevor.com for the purpose of this review but it currently sells for about 220 EUR shipped to the EU from their EU warehouse. I think they have multiple worldwide warehouses so you would have to check the cost for your specific location by clicking the link in the description.By comparison the unit that I built was composed of:Ducted 100mm fan, 26W of power, 198 m³/h, 2200 RPM, 31dB current price 87 EUR including shipping.4 inch carbon filter for hydroponics applications, current price 65 EUR including shipping.Hakko flexible segmented hose 160 EUR including shipping. Although expensive, this thing makes it really easy to use.Triac speed controller for the fan, a plug, some cable, roughly 10 EUR. I don’t really use the speed adjustment, I just use it on full blast every time for proper extraction so you don’t necessarily need the speed adjustment module.This brought the total to roughly 322 EUR which a few years ago was less than half of a professional fume extractor so back then it was worth spending the time to do a DIY system. I also wasn’t as busy as I am today. I also spent maybe another 20 EUR on some clamps and an additional flexible duct, I 3D printed an adapter, but those are not necessarily needed.However after all of that effort, I had clean air. Not a lot of suction power because of the thick filter and because I used an additional long duct, but it was useable, as long as I was soldering next to it, it sucked the fumes and there was absolutely nothing coming out of that filter, at least nothing that I could smell or see. It worked very well for me.

If these measurements are accurate, the calculated ones like energy and capacity will also be accurate.2nd is the functionality, ideally it should have a nice GUI giving me all the information I need, it should support remote voltage sensing. It should have easy battery testing functionality. Optionally I want a PC connection for data logging purposes.3rd is the build quality. I want this thing to last so it has to be built well, I want it to be safe to use, I don’t want this to be an electrical shock hazard or have the risk of burning down. So we’re going to check all of these things in this video/Unit was nicely packed and protected, I just haven’t kept the packaging to show it on video. Inside the box we get the electronic load itself, a mains IEC cable and some spare fuses with a user manual which is actually quite clear and easy to follow.Now let’s start talking about the specs of the unit: It can do 400W max. 0-150V, 0-40A so whichever voltage/current combo you choose it has to be 400W max. It has a resolution of 1mV 1mA but depending on the range it switches to 10mV, 10mA above 20V and 3A. It supports the usual operating modes of Constant Current, Constant Voltage, Constant Resistance and Constant Power. But it also adds Transients test mode, Battery test mode and very interestingly LED test mode where it simulates the characteristics of an LED diode which starts drawing current based on its forward voltage biasing. In terms of protection features, once again we have the standard ones, over voltage, over current, over power and over temperature.On the back of the unit we have the IEC mains input socket, this works with a universal input, a USB port for PC connectivity and this interesting looking pluggable screw connectors that hosts an optional RS232 interface, an optional RS485 interface, one trigger input and two outputs, one that signals test in progress and another one that signals test pass/fail result. These guys are open collector outputs which is awesome because you can pull them up to your desired voltage level. There are some additional pins in here which are unused and disappointingly this unit doesn’t appear to support remote voltage sensing. We’ll have a closer look at how this affects our measurement accuracy in a few minutes.On the front of the unit we have a 2.8 inch TFT color display with a resolution of 320x240 pixels. We have a clicky power switch, rotary encoder knob, dedicated buttons for the main functions and a bunch of additional buttons here for navigating the GUI and selecting the additional functions. The banana input connectors are spaced at about 47mm distance, that’s not standard spacing, although you probably wouldn’t use any standard spacing pluggable connectors on an electronic load. While they feel solid, they feel like cheap banana connectors. We’ll take a look later at how well these can handle higher currents and if their temperature rises.

We also get a power cable, an ESD strap, a bunch of accessories like different nozzles and a very sturdy stand for the tool. There are a total of 8 nozzles included in the package with a mix of both straight and angled nozzles, personally I prefer to use the angled nozzles because they feel more ergonomic and they can be very useful especially when trying to work under a microscope, helps keep the handle out of the way of the microscope lens.Two of the included nozzles are the swirling type which personally I haven’t used before but I think these are supposed to give a more even temperature distribution in the stream of air coming out of the nozzle. So based on this unboxing, again the Sugon 8650 offers more than what’s included with the BST-863.On the back of the unit we have the IEC mains input socket, no externally accessible fuse, and an earthing point. Strangely the label on the back has two ratings power 1000W and max power 1300W so we’ll have to check later if this really is providing 1300W of heating power.On this side we have an integrated tool holder and this can work well if you don’t want to use the extra, standalone tool holder which takes up more space on your workbench. But the provided external tool holder really is one of the nicest I’ve seen. First of all it’s very heavy, feels like it’s entirely cast from thick metal, no risk of typing this over, There is an integrated nozzle holder and this can also double as an active nozzle switching area, so while the nozzle is hot you can easily switch to a different one, I quite like how they have this clamp mechanism built-in so the nozzle is not going to fly away, and there is this built-in gap when the nozzle slides in on the handle to allow for the thickness of this holder, really nice attention to detail.

Inside the box you get a USB Type-C to Type-A cable, a set of very nice silicone wire jumper leads and the compatible mini hooks for probing.Now for those of you curious about the insides of this device, the website shows that proudly but if you are looking for higher resolution images, I’m gonna open my unit up. The enclosure is 3D printed by the way, but on a high quality Multi Jet Fusion printer and it looks very nice. The devices we have here are the Cypress cy7c68014, which is a high-speed USB capable microcontroller. You typically find these USB microcontrollers from Cypress on devices which just need a reliable way of interfacing via USB. There is a little bit of flux residue around this guy, which makes me think this is an early prototype which maybe they had to rework.There is an ICE40UP5 from Lattice. This is a UltraPlus family FPGA with 5280 logic cells. This guy is for sure in charge of the high speed hardware decoding and then packing that data and sending it to the PC via the USB MCU from Cypress.Then we have another MCU from Cypress the CY8C5888LT, this time it’s a 32 bit PSOC 5, Cortex-M3 with built-in DACs, ADCs and all you can think of. If I would have to guess, this guy is in charge of the actual input/output capture of data. It’s interesting that they have a two MCU solution, one dedicated to USB and another one for the rest of the stuff but it’s understandable because the Cortex-M3 guy only supports a more limited USB Full Speed at 12Mbps while the more specialized USB MCU can handle more throughput up to 53Mbps.

And at first, when Reolink reached out to me to send this product for a review I thought, this is not going to be interesting for my viewers, I don’t necessarily need an extra security camera so I was about to turn down the offer when I noticed that this camera actually has a dual lens system which allows you to view both a close-up and a wide-view of the scene and surely this is a very interesting feature that if you ever installed a security camera you wished you had.So this is a small bullet IP camera, it has PoE capability, it can record on a microsd card or an NVR or FTP server of your choice, it is IP66 waterproof rated, you get a nice ReoLink app for viewing the camera remotely, it’s got color night vision and various detection features among other things that we will review in this video. Full disclosure as always this unit was sent in for free for the purpose of this review and should you decide to order one, there will be some links in the description below and they are currently running a promotion so you can get this camera with a discount from its normal price.As you can see camera is very compact, comes with the adjustable mounting stand. On the front we notice the two lenses, two IR leds, one white light LED, this looks like the speaker for the 2way audio and on the back side we have a screw panel which hides the SD card. Connectors include caps which is nice, so we have the RJ45 Ethernet PoE connector, we have the DC 12V input if you prefer to use that and you also have a reset switch. I don’t have a Reolink NVR or any NVR for that matter so I will be inserting an SD card to record some test footage during the review process and please keep in mind that this camera only supports an sd card up to 256GB which Reolink claims can record continuously for up to 58 hours with default settings but before we continue Setting up the camera with the Reolink app was a very smooth and quick process, I mean if you already have the Reolink app installed and you already have an account with them, you just have to power the camera, and it will automatically be detected on the network in a matter of seconds. Then it will ask you to create a password for accessing the camera, a name for the camera and that’s pretty much all that’s needed. Then you can swipe left or right and you can view the two live video feeds. You can even view them both at the same time with the so-called immersive view option.This is my first time interaction with the Reolink app but it feels pretty intuitive, you have the different camera snapshots on the main screen, you can enter a particular view, you get a few controls at the top, for example you can manually sound a siren or you can manually turn on the color night vision mode which enables the white LED or you can turn on immersive view, where it shows both streams at the same time. My personal thoughts about color night vision on security cameras is that it’s super nice, but at the same time, having that white light, clearly gives the camera position away to people passing by, clearly attracts attention so I personally keep that feature turned off on my other security cameras which support it.In terms of viewing and downloading footage there are a couple of ways of doing it but to get the highest quality, you need to select the option for quality that says “clear”. As for download of footage it is best to switch to normal view, select high quality where it says “clear” then find your footage, next click download where you can once again select the start and stop of your clip which you can then download.

They also have TC001 which is identical but for Android with USB Type-C and there is also a TC004 which is a standalone unit with a 2.8inch display among other products in their offer.I’ve seen some comments on my previous review videos that it’s not really a good idea to buy an accessory like this camera with a lightning connector because Apple is going to remove the lightning connector this year and you’re left stranded. Well let me share a few thoughts on why I don’t necessarily agree with that idea.First, people have been saying that Apple is going to remove the lightning connector for the past 4-5 years or so, and did they remove it? No! So you should never purchase something on a promise of a future addition of a feature and I think the same can be said about removal of a feature because you don’t know when and if that’s going to happen.The second thought is that even if apple removes the lightning connector on it’s next device releasing this fall. You probably still have a lightning connector iphone and most people will probably still have it for at least a couple of years more and it will continue to be perfectly usable. But let me know if you guys have a different opinion. I would love to hear about it in the comments below.So the TOPDON TC002 was sent in for free for the purpose of this review and I said why not take a look at a different implementation of the Infiray thermal sensor. How do I know it’s an Infiray thermal sensor? Well for a start it’s the same resolution 256x192, same high refresh rate of 25Hz and same temperature range -20°C to 550°C, features look similar, there are only a handful of thermal imaging sensor manufacturers so I’m pretty sure the sensor inside this camera is Infiray.But Infiray supplies just a framework and it’s up to the individual OEMs to provide a functional package to the user. And depending on their resources they can come up with better apps for examples that enhance the sensor capability.Inside the package we are greeted with the sight of the protective case, thumbs up for that as some cameras or test instruments from other manufacturers do not include the EVA protective case. We also get a lightning extension cable, which is braided but kinda stiff, I like my USB cables to be a bit more flexible, we also get a lint free cleaning cloth and the camera itself seated in its cutout.The app you need to install is very intuitively called TC002 so it’s an easy find on the App Store. It is installed in just a few seconds and upon connecting the camera, it is detected in the upper right corner. You select first option thermal imaging and it starts in the iron color palette which is my favorite. Min max temperatures as well as target crosshair temperatures are displayed by default.

This unit was sent to me for free by xinfrared.com for the purpose of this review, they also sell on amazon so I encourage you to checkout the links in the description below to find out more about them.This camera is likely using exactly the same thermal sensor from infiray inside, because it advertises the same resolution of 256x192 which is a very good thermal imaging resolution for this price range and as I mentioned in Voltlog #442, these sensors are not limited to just a few fps as the thermal sensors coming from the united states, but instead offer you a very nice refresh rate of 25Hz.What’s different about the T2S Plus is that it comes with an adjustable 8mm lens plus this nice handle mount accessory to bring everything into a compact, single hand usage package. So you can clamp your phone in here, clamp the camera on the front side and then you can adjust the focus of the camera using the manual adjustment. This is generally intended for inspection work of electrical panels, distribution boxes, electrical motors, HVAC stuff heating/cooling but they also claim PCB inspection. So we’ll see how close that 8mm lens allows us to adjust later during testing.This mount seems to have a good build quality, it’s made out of plastic, feels very ergonomic, you have multiple tripod mounting points, one at the bottom of the handle, several on the phone and camera clamps which are made of metal and feel very strong.Inside the box we get the camera inside a nice EVA hard carry case and it’s got a warning not to point the camera at the sun. Next to this we get some lint free cleaning cloth. Separate from the box, I also got this lightning extension cable which makes it possible to mount the camera in the special holder and run the wire to the actual phone.But upon seeing the live feed, which started in a black and white image mode, I was immediately mesmerized by the high resolution and high refresh rate. It almost makes you think this is an actual visible light image, as you can see here in this sample video looking at my cluttered desk, you can clearly identify the objects on my desk, you can see them in high detail and all just from the thermal imager, all at this high refresh rate making everything look very fluid.Next I switched to my favorite view which is the iron type color palette and I started exploring the app. Everything works smoothly. You have the video and image capturing modes as well as color mode at one side while the other side has a few options for placing some temperature measurement markers either as a point, as a rectangle or as a line. You can also adjust the temperature units Celsius or Farenheit, you can trigger the calibration shutter manually and you can adjust a few settings that influence the measurement accuracy: things like emissivity, distance, correction.

I’m also sure many of my viewers enjoy these videos judging by the highest number of views they get when compared to my other videos.I’m gonna start the video with this CC1101 based module, this has to be one of the most popular sub 1GHz radio chips out there, been on the market for at least 10 years but it’s still an active part, Texas Instruments even released a pin to pin compatible, lower cost version called CC110L which lost some of its features to be cheaper.My plan is to try and connect this to something like an esp32 and depending on firmware support choose one of the popular platforms like Tasmota, ESPHome or other to create an RF bridge to HomeAssistant. This way I could capture signals that are emitted by my smoke detectors which have a built-in radio signaling option. So this little module should help me experiment with that but ofcourse there are many other possibilities like Remote Control for RF remotes.Next up I have a couple of charging modules and we all know the famous TP4056 linear charging IC for lithium polymer batteries, 5V 1A, some boards came with battery protection IC + mosfet, some without, but they all had the infamous micro USB connector. Well it’s about time we see an upgrade to at least just using a newer USB Type-C connector if not a better newer IC so I found these two options on Aliexpress. This first one is based on the TP4057 set for 1A charging current. As far as I can tell there is no obvious difference between TP4056 and TP4057, might even be just a rebadged TP4056 chip in here. Additionally there seems to be additional chip in here in charge of battery protection. This chip is labeled MKF2L and no results show up on a google search but it must be integrating both mosfets and protection circuit into this package.

First a few words about the solar panel I think it’s the correct size for this power station giving reasonable charging times, it’s a very nice build quality, does the job it was created for so it’s definitely worth getting it if you plan to recharge on the go from the sun.About the power station, at least for me it is a perfect size both in terms of battery capacity but also physically and weight wise a much better fit for me than the bigger blitzwolf station that I reviewed previously.It’s got lithium ion cells so not the best when you compare to lithium ion phosphate in terms of safety and number of cycles but in this price range, lithium ion cells is what you get which again are perfectly fit for purpose. However one thing to watch for is the temperature range which they do mention in the manual it’s 0 to 40 degrees Celsius, don’t try to charge this in below zero temperatures as that will damage the batteries, I think it even has a protection feature that will prevent you from doing that.In terms of dc outputs and features, it definitely has less ports and less capability than bigger power stations but unless you have some very specific use cases for those, it’s no use to you for just ticking them on a paper spec sheet. For example it’s no use to me if the blitzwolf station really outputs 3A on the USB Type-A ports instead of 2.4A on this guy because my phone is going to accept a maximum of 2.4A anyway. But I do agree that they should update their user manual to include the real specifications for these USB ports because it creates confusion and disappointment if the user expect 3A and it’s not getting it.USB Type-C port has just 65W output even though it claims 100W, but Maybe that just some miss communication when they wrote the user manual, I don’t know. Bottom line being that 65W on a USB-C should be enough for most people using this when traveling.The Wireless charger is unusable unless you have some kind of flat device that might be able to align with the charging pad, my phone just doesn’t fit very well in there, not even if I rotate it 90 degrees.A big advantage of this power station is that it comes with this status screen and a bluetooth connection which makes it very easy to monitor if your outputs are on or off, how much power goes in or out, especially when charging with a solar panel or using the mains inverter. Also gives you control over the flashlight feature which is pretty nice to do in a camping type scenario.So because of the form factor, size and feature set this will be my next preferred power station to take with me when going on a trip. Might be a different set of requirements for you but definitely worth checking this one out if you are in the market for such a gadget. I’m gonna start with this VOLTME dual USB Type-C phone charger. So recently I’ve upgrade my phone and watch, I am charging them with the original wireless chargers which both have USB Type-C on the adapter end. I was not particularly interested in the output power, because I charge at night time exclusively so it doesn’t really bother me if I’m not reaching full power but I wanted the charger to be as small as possible to make it easy to carry during travels as well. So I came across this brand and this particular model, VOLTME, 30W max power, dual USB-C output, supposedly based on GAN transistors which would explain the tiny package. I mean look at how small this is, it’s incredible. Exactly what I needed in terms of power. I haven’t heard of this brand before but they claim they are an OEM for these so presumably you’ll see stuff like this under different branding as well, who knows maybe even as a BASEUS charger.I’ve got two of them, one I have been using for the past couple of months and I am really happy. For my personal use this charger is perfect. My watch needs 5V 5W while my iPhone needs 15W which is likely not getting it while charging at the same time with the watch, but like I said, not needed in my case because of the long hours during night charging.So a bit of clarification, even though this brick is rated for 30W it can only do that if one of the USB ports is used, so that it will negotiate to a USB Type-C Power Delivery voltage like 15V or 20V to deliver all that power. But since I’m also plugin in a second device which negotiates down to 5V, both ports will stay at 5V, limiting the total output to 3A I believe, so just 15W.It makes sense because the charger is very small so they probably don’t have the space for the dual output converter in there. The logo lights up which might be a problem like it was in my case because I’m running it right on my nightstand socket but I masked it with some black tape so it’s all good.

I did a review of it in Voltlog #330.As explained in that video a current probe is not something that everyone needs, certainly not required for the average hobby projects, it’s more of a special tool that is used whenever you need to take a look at the current waveform in a high speed isolated manner. That could mean looking at the current waveforms for various parts of a switch mode power supply circuit AC or DC, power factor correction or for the current waveform at the input of a particular load, measuring inrush currents or like in automotive you would want to look at the waveform when driving an fuel injector coil. You wouldn’t use something like this for measuring the power usage of your low power microcontroller because you would be in the noise level of what this instrument can do.So that was a short introduction and I also have to mention that back then the Micsig CP2100A and the other variant CP2100B were considered high bandwidth probes at 800KHz and 2.5MHz respectively. Well Micsig recently released a newer model the CP503 which I have here for review. This unit has been provided by Micsig through their EU distributor ELESHOP which I highly recommend you checkout if you are looking to order one of these in the EU, a link will be provided in the description below.And this model can go up to 50MHz and 100MHz depending on the variant you choose.Additionally they also have two connection methods or variants of this probe, you could have the standard, universal BNC connection which would work for any oscilloscope input but now you can also have the UPI interface which is supported on their newer Osciloscope like the STO1004 which I reviewed in Voltlog #438.The advantage of having the UPI interface is that there are additional data and power pins, besides the BNC signal connection. This means you can have active circuitry built into your probe, calibration data, the scope can talk to the probe, read that data and decide how to adjust scope parameters based on that. So in my case I have the UPI interface version but you can also get it as a standard BNC interface which will work with any oscilloscope.As we notice the CP503 has a totally different form factor, I like both of these form factors, I haven’t seen any limitation with either but I’m sure that this thinner one would work better for when you need to probe within some tight spaces. I have the CP503 model here which is rated for 50MHz, while the CP1003 is rated for 100MHz. But the differences between the two models pretty much stop at bandwidth which is huge BTW, I mean any kind of power supply system you might be working on, this will got you covered.

At some point you’re going to need maybe a custom enclosure or a custom front panel or a custom holder for some sensor and you may decide you want that made on a CNC machine.And this used to be quite an expensive deal, it used to take a long time to get something like this manufactured, it just wasn’t feasible for hobby level. Hence why people started doing PCB FR4 front panels for their enclosures a while ago. But that is no longer the case these days with companies like PCBWay.com which is the official sponsor of the voltlog youtube channel. If you go on their website, you will find the CNC and 3D printing tab where you just get all of this wonderful options for manufacturing, you get CNC, you get 3D printing in all of the available technologies, you get sheet metal fabrication, injection molding, laser cutting you name it and all of these are accessible in 1 off quantity with affordable pricing.So I wanted to give this a try and show you guys how easy it is to get something like this manufactured these days. In my case I did not have an electronics related job but mostly a home improvement kind of thing, so you’ll probably laugh at this use case, but I have this couch in my living room, which has these thin metal stands, and I have a nice wooden floor and I noticed the couch stands started leaving imprints in my nice wooden floor. So this was a cosmetic issue with leaving those nasty imprints but also a functional one because the couch just slides around on the wooden floor. It’s just bad design, I don’t know why they designed it that way. The contact surface is just so thin that you can’t even attach some of those special rubber protection things.So I decided to fix this and I started by getting exact measurements of the feet with my calipers I then sketched those measurements in Fusion 360 and started designing this holder where the couch feet would sit on a larger surface. This was a fairly simple design that I got done in a matter of minutes. Once I was happy with the result I exported this as a step file and and i uploaded the resulting file on PCBWAY.com. I went for CNC manufacturing, as a material I selected Aluminium 7075 and I opted for an Anodized black finish not because it was needed for any specific reason but just because I wanted to give it a try. And I opted to get 5 pieces manufactured. Based on these settings I got a total of $157 USD which is not bad considering this is a custom CNC part, machined out of a material that I specifically picked Aluminium 7075 and then anodized.It took a few weeks and I finally received my custom parts, nicely packaged and here they are. Nicely looking with that black anodization finish, manufactured exactly based on my design. Now while these new parts will spread the weight of the couch over a much wider area preventing the indents in the floor surface, this is still a very smooth surface one that will slide around. So to prevent that from happening I purchased this adhesive rubber material, this is 2mm thick, 30mm wide and 50cm long strip which was like $4 a piece or something like that. I would say that 2mm is too thick for this purpose, 1mm would have been just perfect. So Now I’m adding this rubber backing on the aluminium support piece which will prevent it from sliding around on the wooden floor.

Because there might be some people that haven’t heard of this. It’s this small coin sized device, powered by a CR2032 battery, it features a Ultra Wide Band & Bluetooth radio connectivity in there, due to the apple U1 chip, which is capable of both low power data transmission but also measuring of the time it takes for these radio waves to bounce back which can be translated into measurement of distance with a precision of 1cm within a limited range.Now because Apple built its own Ultra Wide Band chip, the so called U1 chip and because it operates a fleet of roughly 1.8 billions of iphones globally you can imagine how it makes sense for them technically and financially to sell such a tracker because it doesn’t need to transmit too far before it’s been picked up by one of those 1.8 billion iphones that are active globally. So every time this little tracker is within range of an iphone, the phone will pick-up its signal and will report back to the mothership with the air tag serial number as well as the GPS position of the phone at that time. And this happens transparently, you don’t even know it and while you can turn this feature off if you wanted, the setting is buried deep and it affects things like how you connect to other apple products so you wouldn’t really want to have it disabled.Another feature of the Air Tag is that it contains a small speaker which is capable of playing sounds, it can be triggered from the Find My app and you can see how this can be useful for locating your stuff, like when you lose your keys and they are under a pillow or something.So people started using these things to track their keys, their personal belongings like a bicycle, a car, a suitcase during travel, whatever you own and legally have the right to track. But bad people also started using these to track other people which is illegal so following up on those cases, Apple decided to introduce a new feature and now AirTags will play a sound without any way of stopping that, wherever they’ve been connected to the same iphone for several days in a row. As you can imagine this is the case when someone is trying to illegally track you by placing one of these in your car or purse, because the airtag will only be connecting to your iphone which is always with you.So here is what you’ll need, just a utility knife and with some careful prying, you should be able to disable the speaker with minimal damage to the air tag. It’s best if you use a beefy utility knife, with a strong blade which would prevent it from snapping in the process. I’ve seen a bunch of other videos showing you how to take it apart but they almost always use excessive force, which breaks the little clips holding the case together. What I’m gonna show you allows you to open this without destroying it.So first step is to remove the battery and then hold the airtag in this position. There are 3 clips holding it together and the enclosure is a very tight fit. But you should expect the clips to be roughly at these positions which I’ve marked on the case. So by prying with the knife blade at exactly those positions you are able to unclip the retaining clips one by one without destroying them.Once you have it opened, we get a clear view of the speaker which is composed of two parts. The coil and the magnet. The simplest way to disable the sound is to remove the magnet, you can pry it open with the knife as it’s only held in place by some light adhesive. And at this point you can put the airtag back together. And if at any point in the future you want to restore the sound you can just place the magnet back in the same position.One mention here is that a speaker coil even without a magnet, still makes a very small amount of noise, it’s something that if you have good hearing you can only hear in a quiet room by placing the air tag next to your ear. Certainly not something you would hear from 1-2m away in a normal environment. Even though I haven’t published much in the past month it was for good reason, I spent some quality time relaxing with my family. Shopping on Aliexpress continued nevertheless so here are my latest findings.This is an item for cat owners, it’s called merry pet as you can see on the box and this is probably the future in terms of cat toys, they’re gonna get smart and internet connected. This comes from the mijia brand and it’s a motorized ball with bluetooth connection. You connect this to the xiaomi app on your phone, and then you can control it to spin around the floor to drive your cat crazy. I believe the app can only discover it if you have the region set to China, so I had to do that on my android test phone but once that’s completed this thing rolls like crazy on a smooth floor surface making cat sounds. It has an internal rechargeable 300mAh battery which you can charge via the micro usb port. Personally I don’t have a cat but I figured I’d show this because many people might be interested. I’ll probably give this one away as a gift to a friend who has a cat but if you are interested in getting one, checkout the link in the description below.Next up I have a simple apple air tag holder, I’ve recently purchased some airtags for tracking some personal belongings and also to use for a project I’m working on as a consultant for a client. Theres many of these available on aliexpress, I believe I also showed that one which is disguised as a flange for the water bottle holder on a bicycle. I need to install an airtag into that one as well to track my bike. But one thing that is annoying with airtags, at least annoying for honest people like myself, is the sound they make when they’ve been tracked by the same device for more than 2-3 days. That kinda defeats the purpose of the tracker being hidden and I get it that some people use it to track other people illegally and it is to prevent that but it’s such a pain for honest people that want to silently track their belongings. So what I’m gonna do is to disable the speaker, yes there is a fairly easy way to do that and I’ll show that in an upcoming video. Until then you’ll find a link to this in the description below.

It has an industrial 8-inch TFT 800x600px with capacitive touch screen. The screen itself is glossy but it does come with a matte protection film included in the package. By comparison a Rigol DS1054Z which I’ve been using for years now, has the same 1GSa/s but with just 24Mpoints so the Micsig will be able to capture more data points onto which you can then zoom in and analyze. By the way if you would like to check out the cost of this unit or purchase one, I will be placing links to authorized resellers in the EU and US where you can get it.It’s got the usual UART, LIN, CAN, I2C, SPI serial bus decoding functionality. One nice feature that I was glad to see is their Universal Probe Interface, they have these auxiliary connections next to each probe input onto which active probes or differential probes can connect, can be powered, can be automatically detected by the scope. This is a feature that you typically only see on higher end scopes.Being a portable scope it obviously has a li-ion battery, 7.5Ah capacity, it’s removable, they quote a 5h battery life, which I think might be achievable with a reduced screen brightness. I ran a test by having the brightness set to max, all channels enabled and a math FFT enabled and it lasted just over 3 hours doing that.Inside the box you get the 4 standard probes, no attenuation adjustment on these, they are fixed x10 probes, you get a matte screen protector which I think it’s a great idea to include, but since I did a fairly bad job at applying mine it would have been nice to include two of these in the box. Nonetheless it looks much nicer with the matte film. You also get a 12V 4A power adapter for charging and that’s about it. No carry case included, but Micsig does have an optional carry bag for their portable scope lineup. Or you can order just a standard laptop carry bag and use that, whichever you prefer.Boot time is pretty long, approximately 35 seconds until the scope is operational, but that’s pretty normal with this type of scope because it first needs to start the operating system, then the oscilloscope app which runs on top. This by the way is running a heavily customized Android 11, on top of which is running some custom Micsig apps. It has 32GB of internal storage and WiFi connection capability. The WiFi connection is useful for software updates, for installing additional software or for sharing the screen of the scope just like you would do screen sharing with any other Android device like your smartphone. There is also the option of a mobile Android or iOS and PC app for controlling the scope over WiFi or USB.The scope also has other very convenient features like color temperature mode, adjustable persistence mode, or very useful pre-defined channel labels. Remember how long it took to label your signals on a standard scope? Now you can just preselect from the list or even if you need to define a custom one, you have a full keyboards to take advantage of. Oh and by the way this supports external keyboard/mouse as well but I don’t think you will need one.

It has an accelerometer internally and it can detect you placing it on any of its 6 sides which can then be programmed to trigger certain actions in your home automation. So instead of flipping a switch, you would just flip this cube on your nightstand.It can also detect other motions like, rotating the cube which can be used to adjust brightness.. Double tapping the cube, shaking the cube, pretty much anything you would do with an accelerometer, they have that built into this cube. So I wanted to give this a try, it does have a bit of added weight to it, which is a good thing, otherwise this would be too light to feel nice. I haven’t yet used it, just took it out of packaging but I’m gonna give it a try to see if I like controlling stuff with the cube from my nightstand. I will not be using this through the aqara ecosystem but rather integrated directly with zigbee2mqtt.My next item is even more interesting, I’ve always wanted to take a look at one of these fingerprint locks and let me mention this right from the start, these are locks for honest people, so I don’t expect any serious level of security from this, I just plan to install this on a furniture cabinet/drawer something like that. At this level and size any amount of serious force would override the lock and bust it open but it will help me keep some things private in my home or office and it has the nice advantage that I don’t have to carry an additional key. So the fingerprint scanner unit would go into a standard 20mm hole on the door panel, the lock unit would go on the inside.It uses 4 AAA batteries, I’m not sure how much battery life we can get out of this but they have a really cool feature, a micro usb port on the front of the fingerprint reader so if the batteries which are on the inside of the drawer run out, you can externally inject power and open the lock.Would have been nice for this port to be Type-C but since I will likely never use it.. I guess this works too. And I must say, I was expecting worse build quality, but it feels pretty decent and it responds pretty fast to fingerprint reads, I quite like what I got for my money.

This microscope has served me well for a few years but it has one annoying thing, the fact that it uses 3 different power adapters: one to supply power to the camera, one for the monitor and another one for the LED lights. This obviously takes up 3 different sockets on my extension lead and creates a mess of wires.I’ve always wanted to fix this issue but I guess it was just too simple to be bothered to work on this, until a couple of weeks ago, when I finally decided to do it. So this is my solution, I call this the Microscope Power Distribution Unit and this module takes in a 12V DC input via this input dc jack, I put in some bulk storage capacitance 220uF and a 0.1uF for filtering, then I feed the power into 3 individual PTCs for protection, these are 16V 1.5A which in turn feed into 3 output channels that can either be configured with a dc-dc converter to step the voltage down and I’ve used the classical 3 pin footprint on these, we have input on the left, gnd in the middle pin, output on the right.There are a bunch of different manufacturers offering DC-DC converters in this type of package. I just picked one that was available at my local distributor to step the voltage down to 5V on this channel. Then I have these other two connected in bypass mode, there is a little jumper on the back to do that, so I’ll be having 12V on these channels , minus a small insignificant voltage drop on the PTCs. And I also have an LED connected to each output to signal power is present.I designed these PCBs in Kicad and ordered a set of 5pcs from PCBWay.com which are the official provider of printed circuit boards for the Voltlog channel. Right now PCBWay are running their 5th annual PCB design contest so if you have some pcb design that you would like to submit, you’ll have a chance at winning some very interesting cash prizes.I went with green soldermask which is probably my favorite and ENIG gold plating which makes it look very nice. In terms of shape and size, I designed this to fit a cheap enclosure which I think I got off aliexpress, I will be placing a link to this in the description of the video.I didn’t get a stencil for this PCB. I thought it would be too much trouble to apply paste with a stencil, then I have to clean the tools and the stencil when I could just manually cover this small number of pads with a solder paste syringe like I have here. Same as always I soldered this on my trusty hot plate.I’m glad that I got the PCB size right, because I didn’t have an exact drawing of this cheap enclosure, I just took some manual measurements and hoped for the best but the holes are aligned, there is enough clearance on the outline of the PCB, everything seems good. I just needed to dremel out some holes for the dc barrel jack connectors.So this is how everything goes together, I’m probably going to use some double sided tape to attach this to the back or some zip ties, I now have a single power adapter and a good quality one from meanwell, I got this model which is rated for 12V 3.3A which is more than what I need but it’s what was available in stock for next day delivery. A single cable feed into the power distribution unit and then I use these shorter dc-jack connections to feed individual channels into the monitor, camera and lights. Links for these short dc-jack pigtails will be in the description below the video.I’m happy with how the PCB turned out, it not only serves this specific purpose but can also be used for other projects by equipping it with various dc-dc converters to generate different voltages and same as always this is an open-source project, you will find the sources for the kicad project shared on my github so you are welcomed to order your own PCBs or just design and build variations of this design.

This blue PCB is model number HXJ8002, single channel approximately 1W into an 8ohm load, input voltage range 2-5.5V, takes a stereo input which I assume it mixes together.The second one with purple PCB is based on the popular PAM8302 class D amplifier chipset, also a mono output, similar input voltage range 2-5.5V, rated for 1.3W output into an 8ohm load. The only advantage that I see with the purple board is the adjustment pot which might help you fine tune the gain.mmWave radar sensors are very popular these days, I’ve been working on some projects based on one of these sensors as part of my professional work but it seems like a popular hobby grade choice is this module from HiLink, it’s the LD2410 part number, works at 24GHz, only has 1 TX and one RX antenna so given the frequency, the nr of antennas and it’s output power this won’t give you the ability to sense at more than a few meters, it won’t give you the ability to sense things like a person breathing rhythm, it won’t give you the ability to determine the position of a person on an X Y plane but still it will give you the ability to detect a person's presence. I wanted to test this to see if I can find a use for it in my smart home projects given its availability and low cost. The nice thing about this is that it has a UART interface so you are getting pretty much the data you are interested in, already processed by the onboard MCU. I also ordered another model which did not arrive yet, that oneh showed 4 antennas but they seem to be coupled together 2 by 2 so that might not be able to provide any extra positional data but just more sensitivity.

Today we’ll be taking a look at this digital microscope that was sent in for the purpose of this review from Andonstar. If you’ve been subscribed for the past couple of years you know that I have this trinocular microscope on my workbench and I have been using this occasionally when I need to soldering some very small components, do some repairs, I’m talking stuff that’s usually smaller than 0402. So in this video I will be providing a comparison between something like this trinocular microscope and a digital camera/monitor microscope for the electronics workbench to help you make an informed decision whether to get one or the other.Unit was delivered to me from an amazon warehouse in the EU so.. really fast shipping and no customs involved but I hear they can also ship from US warehouses or directly from China. It’s nicely packed with protective foam and inside you get all of the accessories required to operate this microscope systemPutting everything together is really quite straight-forward no user manual needed for that, two screws to attach the vertical post to the metal base and then the monitor/camera assembly just slides into its holder and is secured using a couple of thumb screws which have some rubber stoppers on the end to prevent scratching. Build quality is good but nothing to write home about, for example the mechanism for sliding up and down works, it does the job, but it’s not smooth in any way. You also have the option of tilting this to the back to get a different angle on the working surface but for general use you’ll probably want to keep it vertical.I like the fact that they have tried to optimize the wiring so you get this combo power cable which feeds power to the LED lights with brightness adjustment on this line remote plus it feeds power to the monitor/camera system at the same time, so you only have to plug in one USB. They also include one extra USB cable and I guess this is for connecting to a computer because it does come with Windows app but I’ll talk about that later. I don’t like the fact that the connector on the monitor is micro USB, I think all products sold in 2022 should feature USB Type-C, in my view there is no excuse for anything other than that, especially since it only ads maybe 50 cents of extra BOM cost to do that.The first thing that you’ll have to do upon powering up the unit, is to adjust the height of the camera from the stand until you get it reasonably in the focus range, then you’ll need to adjust the actual focus by turning the adjustment on the camera. And when you have this adjusted well enough ,you will be greeted with an excellent high quality crisp image. And I don’t think I mentioned this but this particular model has a 10.1 inch monitor with a resolution of 1280*800 pixels which is not quite full HD but definitely looks very good on this size of monitor. The camera system on the other hand is 4MP so that’s about twice the FULL HD resolution, so you can capture high quality images and videos in high resolution and high frame rate.There is also the option of using an external monitor via the HDMI out port, I don’t know if it will output the full camera resolution but be aware that you lose the built-in monitor image when you use the external HDMI output and you lose the ability to record videos so that feature doesn’t really make a lot of sense unless you’ve got a damaged built-in screen because otherwise why would you get a microscope with a built-in monitor if you plan to use it with an external monitor?

It measures current, voltage, power, energy, and charge. It does that through an autoranging shunt ammeter that supports an amazing dynamic range which is needed for analyzing the power usage of modern electronics. We notice a bump in the ADC performance with an increase of effective bits plus an increase in bandwidth. We get more general purpose inputs, we get a new trigger in or out function, a new software controlled fuse, new open-source drivers which gives you the ability to automate test measurement setups using your favorite software.We also get a bump in the dynamic range, the measurement range has been extended to plus or minus 3A sustained and plus or minus 10A pulse, typical resolution has been improved and is now 0.5nA and the same can be said about the voltage measurement which has it’s range increased to plus or minus 15V. So pretty much a better instrument across the board with almost every spec improved.The Joulescope comes in this black EVA hard shell carry case and inside you’ll get the Joulescope itself plus its accessories. As you’ll notice it’s got a new enclosure, different size, input and measurement banana jacks are on this side and on the other side we have the GPIO ports trigger in and out BNC port and the new USB Type-C interface which is a pleasant surprise. Among the accessories we get an allen key to be used with removing / exchanging the front panel boards, a USB Type-C Cable and the GPIO dupont connection wires. Side note here, you always include a USB cable with your product because that saves a lot of resources on custom support where the user plugs in whatever he has around and the product is not working as expected because of a bad USB cable.

Once again lots of interesting stuff has been gathering in my special mailbag bin so let’s get this started.My first item is a set of cleanroom wipers and if you remember in the past I used to get these little green box ones from Relife brand but I couldn’t easily find those on a quick aliexpress search so I ended up getting these which have a similar cost and they look and feel identical. As a side note while I was googling for a picture of the old wipers I was getting I actually found the aliexpress listing that sells them so in some cases google search can help you to find certain products listed on Aliexpress more than the Aliexpress search itself which has been broken since forever.I use these on the workbench primarily to wipe flux residue off PCBs using flux cleaner or just IPA. They do a great job and they are lint free. Their cost has gone up a little bit over the years as with everything else but they’re still OK and worth keeping on your workbench as you will no doubt find them useful. Same as usual there will be links provided in the description below to all of the products shown in this video.Next up I got a few different styles of these DC barrel jack extension leads, these have the male connectors on both ends and I plan to use these for an upcoming project. I will be making this power distribution unit for my microscope setup because right now I have 3 different power adapters that I need to plug in when using my microscope. One for the LED lights, one for the overhead camera and another one for the monitor. This is annoying and I would like to use a single power source with a power distribution unit attached to the microscope stand and then split that into 3 different dc paths to power the 3 items mentioned earlier. These cables will come in handy to connect those. I might use these curly ones or the straight ones and just do some cable management to keep them nice and tidy.

My viewers recommended in the comments that I should also take a look at the ratcheting crimp tool from IWISS which is isn’t that much more expensive but should be easier to use, less fiddling, will crimp both parts of the crimp at the same time, won’t let you apply too much pressure which would crush the crimp so overall it should provide a better user experience and better crimps, at least in theory.The model number for this is IWIS-3220M, comes in similar packaging, once again, there is some great information on the packaging itself, the list of supported crimp types, list of wire size vs the correct slot on the die as well as a bunch of tips & tricks on how to get a good crimp. This tool is rated for AWG32 up to AWG20 wire size in sq mm that would be 0.03 up to 0.52 sq mm, for my particular use case this is the range of crimps and wire sizes that I commonly use at my electronics workbench.By the way should you decide to get one of these after watching my review there will be some links in the description of the video with places where you can order this tool so check them out.Construction wise, like I mentioned earlier, this is ratchet type crimp, quite a weak spring action on the mechanism, I would have preferred a bit more force in the spring they use but that shouldn’t affect the quality of the crimps. There are rubber handles which feature this lock here to prevent them from sliding on the metal handle, that’s nice attention to detail. You would have to watchout to not get your fingers caught in the ratchet mechanism which sits here on the handles.

These two are USB Type-A to USB Type-B printer style cables but in two different lengths, braided finish, higher overall quality and I tend to use these for stuff like an older AVR MKII programmer, for my label printer, for my monitors which have a built-in USB hub, stuff like that.Then because of modern devices which tend to include less USB Type-A ports but for guys like us who still use a bunch of peripherals, we still need to connect some USB Type-B peripherals to the new USB Type-C ports and it’s nicer when you don’t have to use adapters or USB hubs for that. So I got these USB Type-B to USB Type-C cables for plugging directly into USB Type-C ports, also braided style.And this guy is just a short, braided style, USB Type-A to USB Type-C which lately I use a lot of these guys because all of the pcb’s that I’m building feature USB Type-C ports and I typically need to connect them to a USB HUB which sits right on my desk so I need a short USB cable. I typically get these from Baseus but this time I tried another company and I quite like what I’m seeing. Nice construction here, lots of room to grab on this connector when inserting into a socket. Same as always there will be links in the description below to all of the items shown in this video.Also in the cabling department I needed some of this thicker 18AWG UL1015 wire for various wiring jobs working on prototypes on my electronics workbench. Now for 20AWG or 22AWG I typically recycle those out of old ATX power supplies wiring, I feel like I’m doing the planet a service when doing that by preventing them from going to a landfill but for the thicker 18AWG, those are typically not present on an ATX PSU so I ordered a lot of these, 5m per each individual color so these should last me a good while.

I'm calling this the Pi Killer for reasons which I will outline in a few moments. This was released this summer, it’s the latest model in Khadas lineup and comes with some stellar specs: This has an 8 core Amlogic A311D2 processor, four of the cores are ARM Cortex-A73, running at 2.2GHz, the other four are Cortex-A53 running at 2GHz and there is an extra 32 bit STM32 microprocessor on here, There is a powerful Mali G52MP8 GPU which supports up to 8K decoding, we get 8GB LPDDR4X RAM on this board, 32GB of eMMC storage, 32MB of SPI flash memory which runs it’s own custom bootloader called OWOW, Bluetooth & Wifi 6 connectivity plus 10 gigabit ethernet, there is an M.2 slot for SSD on the back and the list goes on and on, they practically jammed everything that’s nice on this board and out of the box it can run Ubuntu & Android.Now you’re probably asking yourself how does this stackup against the Raspberry Pi4 so here is a simple comparison just based on specs, if we look at processor power, ram memory, storage options, connectivity the VIM4 clearly has more options and more horsepower than a Pi4, the only place where the PI4 has more options is with USB connectivity. But having all of this extra horse power does come at a cost and the VIM4 can get pricey especially if you order it with an active cooling kit which is not included by default but you will need if you plan to benefit from that processing power. We could also talk about availability with the VIM4 being available for order right now, while the Pi4 being harder to find. Due to the VIM4 processor being manufactured on a 12nm process we can also expect better power efficiency, providing more performance per watt over the Pi4.

I got the 8X variant, because there is also a 12X I believe, I paid like $5 shipped for this and this was probably the worst spent $5 in recent times, this is absolute garbage. All I can get is a blurry image, I’ve tried removing the protective case on my phone thinking this might not be the correct focal length because of that but nope it doesn’t make any difference. Other users report similar things in the product review.. So please don’t order this crap.I seriously don’t understand what were they thinking? Why did they make this and package it?Next up I got one of the newer GPS modules from China, this is the ATGM336H which presumably is the part number for the original module Zhongke Micro electronics, but this particular one is rebranded as AiThinker GP-02. Comes with a ceramic GPS antenna so it’s good to go. The SoC used inside this module is the AT6558 and it supports a variety of satellite navigation systems, including China's BDS (Beidou Satellite) GPS in the US, GLONASS in Russia, GALILEO in the EU, QZSS in Japan and I think their main target is to replace ublox max series with something that is the same size, possibly same package but lower cost. I thought I’d give this module a try, keep it in my GPS modules bag waiting to be used in a GPS project. One mention though is that it doesn’t necessarily mean this particular module that I got from Aliexpress supports all of the functions.. This depends on the variant of the chip used inside the module because as the datasheets shows in this table it can have different config levels. This one is an excellent choice as I will show next but I’m mostly referring to the form factor which is great for many things in the electronics lab so it can just as well be a different model with different specs if you choose so but this particular model that I’m going to review has great build quality so it should be on your shortlist.Now continuing with the review, this is how the unit is delivered, it’s a box similar to a big tablet or laptop, inside you get the monitor with it’s leather like case, you get a thick USB Type-C cable, USb Type-A to USB type-C cable, and a mini HDMI to regular HDMI cable as well as a generic 5V 3A usb power adapter.The model number is T16A and it’s likely you may find this under different branding, this one in particular doesn’t have any obvious branding. The size of the screen is 15 inches with a 1920x1080 pixel resolution with 178 degrees viewing angle, 60Hz refresh rate, 500cd brightness rating, 16:9 ratio IPS panel with glossy surface with no touch screen. I would have loved to have a matte screen at the expense of losing some contrast and/or brightness but it’s certainly not a show stopper.In terms of connectivity you get two USB Type-C ports and although one is marked power the other one just super speed. I can use each one of these to both power and supply video/audio data to the monitor at the same time via a single cable. But just as a safety precaution maybe it’s best to stick to the port labeled power when using a single cable solution and use USB-C port 2 if you only supply data and get the power supply separately via port 1. You get one mini HDMI port which can also be used for video input from HDMI out devices and a 3.5mm headphone port. Next to the HDMI there is also a micro-usb port which there is no mention off in the user manual or any of the online listing that I could find but I felt like it must be for OTG like purposes and by using one of these micro usb to type-A adapters which is not included with the monitor I was able to plug in a flash drive which was immediately discovered on the host computer, so this port is just connected to an internal USB hub. The monitor also includes two speakers and not sure if you noticed it already but all of this comes in a super clean and slim package which weighs just 800 grams on its own but more like 900 grams including the leather case.The monitor has a couple of switches on the side for navigating its On Screen Display menu which feels quite nice and professional and I can say that about this monitor in general, everything about it feels quite nice and high quality with no indication that might make me feel this is a cheap product. The case of the monitor feels high quality, the image on this display is actually better than my monitors so I quite like it

To extend its functionality I also created this Shelly relay adapter which can be used to flash shelly relays, in a safe and reliable way by also powering the relay during the flashing procedure so you don’t need to have it connected to mains.So far I haven’t any issues, not one single module with problems and I’ve probably made several hundreds of these. It's a pretty simple design in terms of PCB, the components are 0603 so there isn’t much that can go wrong but recently I’ve started thinking about testing these.Now the topic of test jigs and testing electronics in general can get pretty deep, especially if you need to implement it in the manufacturing process and keep track of the test results in an automated fashion but for hobby level it can be much simpler.For example, depending on the number of units you manufacture, you can also skip testing all together, because if I sell 100 boards and 1 of them ends up defective, I can live with that 1 failure rate and I can cover the cost of shipping another board to that customer and all of this with zero resources wasted testing these but at the expense of one unhappy customer who needs to wait for another unit to be shipped.So mainly for me that was the main factor for wanting to test these, to avoid having unhappy customers that might end up getting a bad unit. And I don’t really need to test for all of the things working, I just need to figure out if I have a working connection from the USB side all the way up to the shelly relay and also verify that the path can be used to communicate over serial and toggle the reset lines.This kind of test would eliminate for example a lot of the most common issue like soldering problems with the USB Type-C connector or with the QFN chip, or with the PCB copper layers, or with the JST-SH pigtail connecting the adapter board, or soldering issues on the small adapter board so all of these would be eliminated.So here is what I came up with, a series of 6 total shelly adapters, chained together in series with an ESP32 at the end of the chain. I would be connecting a VoltLink at the start of the chain, UART signal would then go through 6 of these adapters, connectors, pigtails and it would end up at the ESP32 side for either flashing the ESP32 or writing a small test firmware that would just communicate over serial to verify the whole chain is connected correctly.

I mean it’s not going to be the best tool you can buy, or produce the highest quality crimps but for hobby level and for what you pay, it’s definitely a good deal. The only downside of this kit is that with the included accessories you can’t exactly crimp very small JST connectors, or other types of connectors like JAM, Molex ClickMate.So in order to cover those as well, I decided to give this tool a try which is the IWISS Mini, this is the 2820M model which means tss specified for AWG20 up to AWG28 so in general for thinner wires and crimps but there is also the 2412M model which is specified for AWG24 down to AWG12. At the time of publishing this video the tool was actually under restocking but I’m hoping it will be back in stock pretty soon.Construction wise, this is not a ratchet type crimp, but there is nothing wrong with not having a ratched, in fact in some cases, especially for cheap crimp tools the ratchet mechanism can be a problem and this can also be a matter of preference as some users prefer not having a ratchet system. But when not having a ratchet you have to make sure you are applying the correct force & travel for a good crimp and it does take some practice to reach that level.

It’s also not as big physically and it’s not a multifunction tester, this one just measures radiation but let’s start with our basics, this is the packaging it comes in, inside the box you will find this hard shell carry case which is a nice addition when compared to the previous model we reviewed and btw this one doesn’t really have any branding or a particular model mentioned, it’s just a generic radiation tester but because of that I would image that it’s likely you will find this sold under different names, brands or even shapes.Inside the case the meter sits nicely in this cutout and you get a short USB-C charging cable, a hand strap and a short user manual. Like mentioned this is smaller physically which could be a nice advantage, but also comes with a smaller screen. We have a couple of rubber bands on the sides and a metal clip on the back, with the charging port located on the bottom. Plastic feels soft & decent, matte black, I quite like that.On paper at least this seems to have better sensitivity when compared to the previous model I reviewed but realistically given the size and cost of the unit, I think it must be using a similar miniaturized geiger muller tube which is not the most sensitive tube for this type of application but it does have the size and cost advantage. We’ll be able to see more about this topic in the teardown but first let’s turn on the unit.The screen on this unit feels a bit small at just 2 inches. I mean , in this reading mode, I can clearly see the readings which are using this nice and big 7-segment font, but the small text on the blue ribbons, that seems a bit small to easily read. On the plus side, brightness seems good, easily visible even under my bright video shooting lights. The problem is more apparent when you switch to the menu system which feels really crowded, they went with this thumbnail arrangement, the icons feel small, the text feels small. I would have probably preferred just a simple list menu for this with bigger text.In terms of functionality you get the standard measure & display screen but you also have the options of setting up alarm thresholds and the meter can continue monitoring with the screen off for up to 20 days of battery life and it will trigger an alarm once the threshold is exceeded. It lets you configure the screen off timeout as well as the auto power off timeout which is nice and It can also do data logging although I have not seen any mention of the available memory. A couple of other settings for things like language or screen brightness are also available from the menu system.Turning the unit on or off via long press of this button will make it beep loudly which is annoying but I guess useful to alert the user of the meter status.The good thing is that you have control over the buzzer volume level as well as the option of turning on or off the individual particle sounds, so that’s pretty nice in terms of settings. Unfortunately I still don’t have like a good radiation source to test this so apart from this ion chamber from a smoke detector, but upon testing with this, it does seem to be a bit more sensitive than the previous meter as I can get some values on screen and make it go past 1 micro Sivertz and trigger the default alarm threshold. I’m sure most of you are already wondering how this meter looks on the inside so let’s open it up for the teardown and checkout the tube it uses for detection.

And as usual no matter how many different sizes and colors you have in your box of heatshrink there is always that one odd size that you do not have when needed. Personally I’ve only been getting my heatshrink from Aliexpress in recent years, but how about you? Do you get it from Aliexpress or some more reputable distributor where it costs 5x as much? I mean sure the quality must be better if you get your heatshrink from Mouser but is it worth it for personal use?Next I got a couple of these SMD flat flex connectors with fine pitch to through hole 0.1 inch adapter PCBs and these can be used to connect pretty much any type of flat flex cable, with up to 60 pins, with a pitch that ranges from 0.3 to 1.0mm to a more standard pin header. Typically you would use this to test LCD panels, keyboards, because that’s the stuff that typically will have such a flat flex connector but like I said, not limited to that. Pretty useful to keep something like this in your toolbox, especially since they can be very inexpensive…. Certainly not worth designing your own because you can get these ready made.Recently I’ve reviewed that nice power station from Blitzwolf, it was Voltlog #417 if you are interested in that video. Great product, very nice build quality and I’ve been using it happily ever since I got it, however during testing it, I realized I need more USB plug-in type electronic loads for testing such products and loading them to their max limits. So I ordered a couple of these which are like the cheapest, most basic model, USB electronic load that you can get. This one with the resistors can probably do around 10W, that’s 2A at 5V but it will probably get very hot. The second one which has active cooling can do 15W up to 20V so that’s nice as well for loading your typical USB port. Links for these will be in the description below.Another item that would have been useful when testing USB ports, is a USB to banana or USB to crocodile clip test cable. Because then I could just hook it up to a regular electronic load or a multimeter or whatever your test instrument might be. So I looked around and found this model on Aliexpress, this is from a company that I have tried before, Cleqee.

These can be connected single ended or differential between channels.8 Digital inputs or outputs (0-5V)2 Analog outputs capable of Voltage, Sine or PWM output (0-5V), 12 bit DAC resolution with up to 31KHz of output frequency.1 Counter up to 5MHz with edge detection / PWM up to 65KHz (0-3V3) I’m guessing this can be both input and output?One 5V output limited to 250mA, powered from VBUS rail.It’s USB powered and comes with a DIN rail mount.And another important feature is the way you control the hardware which is through a Python API and everyone loves python these days, however there is one important limitation here, it is only supported under Windows because of hardware driver constraints which prevent it from working under Linux and Mac.Inside the box I got the unit, the DIN rail adapter and a USB cable, this is good practice, to include the USB cable because users might have a low quality USB cable laying around and they might decide to use that low quality USB cable with your product which might cause all sorts of trouble and head scratching as to why your product isn’t working as expected, By including a good quality cable in the box, you limit the number of things that might go wrong for the user.

I have plans for installing some small lengths of LED tape and there is no point in having like a 20W power supply if I’m only going to need something like 10W at most. So I figured why not design this LED driver board to take in USB Type-C power supply input, with power delivery support. This way I could power it from one of these usb-c wall adapters. Simple, clean and reliable if used with a high quality adapter. In addition to that, I would argue that it’s safer too when used with a high quality adapter because you no longer have to deal with mains wiring. Number #2 requirement was to have an ESP32 in there so that I could integrate this into my smart home management system. Having an ESP32 will give me plenty of processing power to run either Tasmota or ESPHome or even better WLED which specializes on LED driving capability.Number #3 requirement was the ability to drive both digital LED tape like SK6812 or WS2812 type and analog type LED tape which you have to PWM on individual channels. I wanted up to 4 analog channels so that I could drive an RGBW tape and at least 2 digital channels but I ended up wiring 4 digital channels because I had more available pins.Number #4 requirement was to have the whole system small so that it could be put in a small enclosure, maybe even enclosed into a wall distribution box. Now considering these requirements one by one, I’ve successfully implemented 1 to 3, not so much on #4, because the whole system is not as small as I would have liked it to be. When fitted inside the enclosure it measures roughly 90*70*30mm and ideally I would have like it to be half of this size, something like 90*30*30mm would have been great but I just couldn’t fit everything in that size unless I was going to do a double sided assembly which I tend to avoid because it significantly raises prototyping and manufacturing costs.

It's been quite a while since the last InTheMail so a lot of interesting stuff has been gathering in my special bin.I’m gonna start the video with this lithium ion battery charger. If you remember this cheap cordless drill which I reviewed in voltlog 285, maybe you can remember that it had a pretty low cost battery charger which I sent to the @DiodeGoneWild youtube channel for a teardown. So ever since then I’ve been charging this on one of my bench power supply units which is not very convenient because I can’t take it with me everywhere I go. So I’ve started searching on Aliexpress for a little more quality in one of these adapters and after many tries, I’ve found this model which doesn’t have any indication of being higher quality other than being different and slightly more expensive than other listings so I said why not give it a try, do a quick teardown to see how it’s built, maybe I can find something better that can also work as a recommendation for other people looking for something similar.So this is 21V rated, obviously intended to charge these 5S packs and it was a rating of 2A so pretty much 1C charging rated or slightly lower if you have 2.5 to 3Ah cells inside. No screws on this unit, cable feels OK, it’s pretty soft PVC, and has markings for 22AWG 2464 type. It’s not very light but not heavy enough to immediately inspire confidence either so we need to open it up. Let me insert a spudger and I’ll be right back

There are however a couple of downsides worth mentioning: first it does not have an IP rating so it should be kept away from water to prevent any damage. This kinda limits the outdoor activity because you would have to watch out and keep it dry at all time. Dust or sand could also quite easily get inside the unit if you take it to the beach.Another important safety aspect is to not let it overheat so you should not run this in direct sunlight, you shouldn’t let it sit operating or not inside a vehicle where the temperature might exceed 50 degrees Celsius. This might harm the battery cells inside and might lead to unpredictable behavior. The wall charger can also get pretty got during operation so I would probably not leave that unattended.And some piece of advice to prolong the life of the battery cells, don’t just store and forget it. Charge it to roughly 50% level and check every 3 months or so and recharge if needed.Overall the market is quite diversified, There are smaller models, bigger ones, different output configurations so you’ll probably have to find one that suits your needs best but this one seems like a nice all rounder which sells for a very competitive price and is stocked in the EU warehouse so it’s worth considering it on your short list because of it’s good specs and good build quality.
