Every few months a photo goes viral out of Mindanao with the word "alligator" attached and a claim of 30 feet underneath it. The animal in the frame is real. Almost everything in the caption is not. This video is about the gap between the two, and about the fact that a 30-foot alligator genuinely did exist, just not in the Philippines and not in this century. We start with what actually swims in those rivers: Crocodylus porosus, the saltwater crocodile, the largest living reptile on Earth and the only reptile alive that treats the open ocean like a highway. Satellite-tagged males have ridden surface currents 366 miles in 25 days, with one waiting four days in a sheltered bay for the Torres Strait to turn in its favor. Then to Bunawan, in Agusan del Sur, September 2011. A missing 12-year-old girl, a missing fisherman, vanishing water buffalo, a three-week hunt, roughly a hundred people on the ropes, and a crane. What came out of that creek was Lolong: 20 feet 3 inches, 2,370 pounds, still the largest crocodile ever measured in captivity. Longer than the F-150 in your driveway, and nearly ten feet short of the number in the headlines. We break down why 30 feet doesn't happen anymore. Crocodiles don't grow forever, the curve flattens hard after maturity, and reaching 20 feet takes roughly half a century. Commercial hide hunting between the 1940s and 1970s didn't just cut the population, it deleted the age structure. We also examine the most famous 30-foot claim ever made, Krys the Savannah King, shot in Queensland in 1957 and reported at 28 feet 4 inches, and what happened to the photographs that were supposed to prove it. Then we go back for the real answer. A honey bee's sting isn't a defense. It's a suicide pact. She drives it in, the barbs catch, and when she pulls away she tears her own abdomen open and leaves part of herself behind. She'll be dead within the hour. She does it anyway. Somewhere in the savannas of East Africa, one population of honey bee took that trade and built an entire way of life on top of it. In October of 1957, twenty six of those colonies got loose in Brazil. This video traces that weapon back to where it started. The sting isn't an invention of the bee at all. It's a modified egg-laying tube, repurposed by a group of Jurassic wasps well over 150 million years ago, which is why every bee that has ever stung you was female. Around 125 million years ago one lineage of predatory wasps quit hunting, switched their larvae over to pollen, and became bees. They kept the knife. The oldest confirmed bee fossil, Cretotrigona prisca, sat in New Jersey amber through the closing stretch of the Cretaceous, and it was a stingless bee. Then we get into the machinery. Two barbed lancets that ratchet deeper on their own. A venom sac that keeps pumping for up to a minute after the bee has flown off to die. Melittin, which punches holes in cell membranes, and a chemical alarm signal that smells like bananas and tells the rest of the colony exactly where to sting you next. None of that is unique to killer bees. The docile hive in your neighbor's backyard carries the identical equipment. What changed in Brazil was the trigger, and the reason comes down to two populations of the same species solving completely different problems. In northern Europe, the enemy is winter, so colonies hoard, endure, and are slow to escalate. In the savannas of East Africa, the enemy is theft, from honey badgers, ants, and people who have been raiding wild nests there for thousands of years. That colony evolved to nest small, breed fast, respond to any disturbance in seconds with everything it has, and pursue an intruder for a quarter mile. We cover the whole chain of events. Warwick Kerr's 1956 trip to Tanzania and South Africa, the 63 queens, the research station near Rio Claro, and the visiting beekeeper who pulled the queen excluders off in October of 1957. The coyote in your neighborhood is not the animal your grandfather shot at. It's bigger, it hunts deer in packs, and roughly a third of its DNA didn't come from a coyote. America spent three hundred years killing its wolves. Massachusetts Bay Colony issued the first bounty in 1630, and by about 1900 the job was finished east of the Mississippi. Nothing left in the Appalachians, nothing in New England, nothing in the Great Lakes states except a holdout in northern Minnesota. An ecological opening that size does not sit unused. What moved into it was not a wolf. Coyotes pushing east around the northern side of the Great Lakes ran into eastern wolves in Ontario, interbred with them, and came back down into New York and New England carrying wolf inside them. Javier Monzón's genetic work on 437 of these animals put the average genome at roughly 64 percent coyote, 26 percent wolf, and 10 percent domestic dog. They are half again the size of a western coyote, wider through the jaw, and they kill white-tailed deer. This video follows that animal from the abandoned farms of New England to the streets of downtown Chicago, where Stan Gehrt's Cook County Coyote Project has tagged more than nine hundred of them living invisibly among people. Which means the animal in your yard has been here before, and is now going back to a size it already held once. The 2021 dire wolf genome adds the counter-case. That animal split off from every living wolf-like canid around 5.7 million years ago and never interbred with any of them. When its prey vanished, it had no genetic door to walk through. Coyotes have that door. The last stop is Galveston Island, Texas, where a resident named Ron Wooten kept roadkill samples in his freezer for years until researchers found that about 30 percent of those animals' DNA traces back to red wolves, a species declared extinct in the wild in 1980. Some of that genetic variation no longer exists anywhere in the captive breeding program. People call them ghost wolves. Coyotes crossed the Panama Canal in 2010. For most of the time our species has existed, we were not the only humans on Earth. We fixed that. The worst thing that ever happened to our species left no bones and no crater. It left a scar inside your DNA, and you're carrying it right now. Every other extinction event on Earth is written in rock. You can drive to the iridium layer that marks the end of the dinosaurs. You can photograph the boundary where the Great Dying erased 96 percent of life in the ocean. But the catastrophe that came closest to ending the human line left no crater, no ash bed, and no mass grave. The only surviving evidence is a subtraction, a set of variations that should be in the human genome and simply aren't. For twenty years the leading suspect was a volcano. Around 74,000 years ago, Mount Toba in northern Sumatra erupted with more force than the largest eruption Yellowstone has ever produced, blanketing an area half the size of the lower 48 states in ash. Stanley Ambrose proposed that the volcanic winter that followed starved our ancestors down to a few thousand survivors. Then archaeologists at Pinnacle Point and Vleesbaai in South Africa found Toba's microscopic glass shards sitting inside human occupation layers, and discovered that the people living there never left. They got better at making tools instead. Which leaves the real question wide open. In 2023, a team publishing in Science used a new method called FitCoal on the genomes of 3,154 living people and reported something far worse and far older. Between roughly 930,000 and 813,000 years ago, the entire breeding population of our ancestors may have collapsed to about 1,280 individuals, and stayed there for 117,000 years. Three Boeing 747s would have carried everybody. Around two thirds of our accumulated genetic diversity vanished, and the timing lines up with a long, unexplained gap in the African and Eurasian fossil record. We don't have a name for these people. We barely have their bones. What we have is the damage they left behind, written into the DNA of every single person alive right now. In 2023, a team of geneticists ran a new kind of math across the genomes of 3,154 living people and found a scar in the numbers. Around 930,000 years ago, the breeding population of our direct ancestors collapsed to roughly 1,280 individuals, and it stayed that low for about 117,000 years. That is roughly five thousand generations of living at the edge of extinction, more than twenty times longer than all of recorded human history. This video walks through the full case. Why a species can leave a fingerprint of near-extinction inside living DNA hundreds of thousands of years later. Two independent teams have argued the bottleneck is a statistical artifact, and one of them has offered an alternative that is arguably stranger than the crash itself. The animal that most likely did it was living in the same cave, in alternating layers, century after century. This is the story of the cave hyena, Crocuta crocuta spelaea. A 225-pound bone-crusher that hunted in coordinated clans from Spain and Britain all the way to Siberia, that could split a leg bone as thick as your wrist, and that spent tens of thousands of years fighting Neanderthals for the same handful of dry caves in the rock. We get into the 1997 Triceratops fossil from Montana that walked around with healed T. rex bite marks on its horn. We look at the Dueling Dinosaurs specimen, two skeletons buried mid-fight, now sitting in the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. And we talk about why Triceratops outnumbers every other large dinosaur in the Hell Creek formation, which is a math problem that does not work if T. rex was actually hunting them the way most people think it did.
We also dig into the history. The first Triceratops horn cores came out of the ground near Denver in 1887 and got named after a bison. John Bell Hatcher pulled a more complete skull out of Wyoming the following year, and Othniel Charles Marsh finally got the name right in 1889. Then the public got handed the wrong version of the animal, and it stuck for over a century.
