This particular one is made from Merbau, cut on the CNC and glued together to form a 3D statue.
Haven't heard of Ned? Criminal or hero, tormented by the constabulary or a rabble-rouser... the debate goes on, even after all this time has passed. One thing for sure he was a legendary figure in history! Born around 1855 in Broadford, Victoria (hey, that's the next town from me!), he had various arrests in his life before his notoriety for assault and later, for receiving a stolen horse. The real trouble started for Ned when he shot Constable Fitzpatrick in the wrist who tried to arrest Ned's brother, Dan. It was all downhill from there. A wanted man in Victoria and New South Wales, he held the biggest reward for capture up to that point. It all came to an end at the infamous shootout at the Glenrowan Inn where, Ned's gang fashioned a suit of armour from plough shears. Wearing the armour, Ned and his 'gang' confronted the police head on, who described the scene as "... it looked for all the world like the ghost of Hamlet’s father with no head... " Ultimately, after an estimated 15,000 bullets were fired, Ned sustained 2 shots to his legs and one to his arm he was finally arrested, transported to Melbourne and tried - sentenced to hang. Poor Ned... (Really? Shot 3 times, but still had the strength to wear 45kg of steel armour AND fire his pistol back at the police? Go Ned!!!)

Made from automotive filler (bog), this is used to make a sand mould prior to the casting process. Once cast, the blanks were taken to a fitter who machined the final details into the aluminium and then a single row of .303 dummy shells were layed into the final casting and an engraved aluminium plate fixed over them (also one of my jobs for him) As a non-working magazine replica, this will be mounted to a replica Lewis Gun on the rear gun-mount tripod of a Willies Jeep (a real one, not a replica!) for RSL display days and fund raisers.
Approximately 12 hours of work has gone into this including the design time. I spent WAY too much time machining because I've never machined bog before this job. I didn't know what to expect, so I kept all the speeds and cut depths down low. A good fun job... but not a practical business venture.
