For a franchise as storied as the Los Angeles Lakers, it has to employ people who bleed purple and gold. According to Rick Fox, LA did a great job by landing Magic Johnson in 2017 as their president of basketball operations, but things could have been even better had they managed to get Kobe Bryant up in there as well.
"One-hundred percent, Kobe Bryant anywhere around the organization bodes well for all of us,” Fox told Bleacher Report in 2017. “Just his presence. Just like Magic's presence bodes well for things moving forward.”
It was a no-brainer
For those who didn’t know, Fox was Bryant’s former teammate, the Lakers’ primary enforcer on the defensive end in their historic three-peat. With that in mind, it’s quite understandable that even though he didn’t have the experience in hiring people, Fox rooted for Kobe to be part of the Lakers’ front office.
But apparently, even Johnson, the newly appointed Lakers president of basketball operations at the time, shared the same sentiment. For Magic, Bryant was way more qualified than half of the experienced front office guys in the league and having him on board was absolutely a no-brainer.
"First call I make if I'm in charge? Kobe Bryant," Johnson said on ESPN's First Take. "Because Kobe understands winning. He understands, also, these players. I would call: 'What role you want? ... If you've got a day, just give me that day.' I'll take that. Whatever time he has, I want him to come and be a part of it."
