Is No Gi BJJ Just Catch Wrestling in Disguise?
updated
He says the reason is because of the poor technical training that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gyms often provide.
I thought this comment was pretty interesting and thought we could chew on these ideas for BJJ together.
In this video I talk about the times when I first started training BJJ, during its mainstream boost, and the times before then too and how different the training structure was compared to now, and how much higher the attrition rate was back then compared to how it is now.
I also answer a few common questions: is Jiu-Jitsu for everyone? Why do some people stick around while others don't? and what other things should we consider before comparing the training of BUDS and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
Hopefully you find the ideas in this video useful for you.

With that being said, today a viewer named Wes writes in and says:
"Hey Chewy, my hips are very inflexible. Do you have any suggestions on how to perform Triangle Chokes in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with this problem?
This can be a very simple problem to fix if approached properly.
I'll give you guys a few stretches to help improve your flexibility and some smaller details to help you finish your Triangle Choke.

Coach Bob says that in his gym he is there to push people to be competitors and to win. He's there to train, drill, and roll and overall develop a competitive crew.
However, in his experience, this type of attitude affects many practitioners negatively and seems to run people off.
Coach Bob ask how to get people to stick to training, while simultaneously making his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu students better.
In this video I'll discuss what I try to do in these situations and how to handle hobbyist vs. competitors in a Jiu-Jitsu gym.

He's getting into BJJ but feels like he's having a lot of issues with the grips in the Gi. He was wondering if I had any particular Gi specific grip set ups for Wrestling Based takedowns.
This is a pretty common issue for former Wrestlers who transition into Gi Jiu-Jitsu, so it's a great question to answer.
In this video I show you my favorite "Wrestling Style" takedown and set up that I use in the Gi. It also works well in No-Gi.
Hopefully if you're a former Wrestler in BJJ, or anyone else looking to improve their takedowns in the Gi, then you found this video helpful.

He says that he's recently noticed an online trend of grapplers saying that you do NOT need to drill, on top of saying that it's actually a waste of time.
He asks if I think you MUST drill to be good at Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Well, in this video I talk about my experience with drilling, the potential benefits of doing it, and some of the drilling experiences I've heard from other grapplers that I have trained with directly.
hopefully these ideas can be helpful for you.

Later on he was looking online and couldn't find a gi size that matched up with his build.
So he's curious about what to do since normal gi sizes don't fit him.
In the video I'll give Chris some ideas on what to do if you need non-traditional sizes for a BJJ gi. But I also address what I see as a issue with the person at the gym who gave Chris his 1st gi.

He is a 3-Stripe White Belt In Jiu-Jitsu, on top of being a bigger, so he tries his best to be as good of a training partner possible without hurting anyone, rolling soft in all his rounds.
Well, recently Derrick and his coach were rolling, and they ended up in the 50/50 Position and, out of nowhere, he injured his coach.
It was a complete accident and even the coach doesn't blame Derrick.
Even though this is true Derrick still feels bad and doesn't know what he should do to make up for the injury.
Well, I give Derrick a few pieces of advice, while also telling you a few stories about injuries I personally suffered in practices, and how I tend to deal with my own injuries when they happen in class.

If you're not familiar, the gift wrap position is tough to deal with, and if you don't know how to deal with it, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is going to be rough for you. The position usually happens after someone gives up an angle from the mount position and opens up tons of options for them.
So in the video I'll show a simple way to escape the position by palming your face. Now the escape isn't easy and you will be exposed to multiple submissions, but the escape will give you a fighting chance.
Hope the escape helps!

Every time Bob has competed, they have lost their second-round match.
They feel exhausted and worn out after every first-round match at Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournaments and can't wrap their mind around WHY this keeps happening to them.
They say that they can roll all day in the practice room, but get extremely exhausted in actual competition.
Bob asks me how he can prevent this exhaustion and burn out from happening at tournaments.
Here's what I think.

This technique is something I started playing with as a BJJ White Belt to setup keylocks as I'll show you. It's very similar to the iron squirrel that you guys have seen in past videos if you've watched for a while.
From there I use this same palm-to-face idea to blocks someone's arm and work in past their knee shield and apply lots of pressure on them as well.
In this video, I'll show you exactly what he's talking about, on top of a cool trick to set up a few other submission attacks like the Key Lock or other Arm attacks in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

He says he's been in the BJJ gym for about 18 months and can hold his own against white belts, blue belts, and even stay alive against purple belts. He's even placed at Blue Belt tournaments in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
His worry is that he has received no stripes on his white belt, even though he's seen all the success listed above.
He wonders what I think and how he should talk to his BJJ coach about the subject of stripe and/or belt promotions.

This is a good question! I used to deal with this same thing years ago where I wanted to go hard with my BJJ coaches but didn't want to disrespect them.
And as a BJJ Black Belt who's got a modicum of celebrity in the Jiu-jitsu space I can tell you that there are cases where we can train super hard and it's a great rolling session. On the flip side, I've trained with people where I feel irritated and don't want to roll with a person again.
I'll explain the difference between the 2 in the video and I hope this helps you if you're in a similar situation.

The takedown is also relatively safe as it doesn't require you to drop to your knee. I know this is something that worries many Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practitioners who aren't used to the movement or worry it will cause them to get sprawled on and smashed. It uses a front headlock to setup a basic high double leg takedown.
I also included a short clip from 1 of my BJJ matches so that you can see the technique and what it looks like during a competition match.
Hope you enjoyed the video!

A couple of blue belts came up to me asking questions about their grips burning out and getting tunnel vision during their rolling. After listening to their situation, I gave them some simple advice. Something that helped me with my BJJ.
Now the advice is very simple and can be applied by anyone from white belt to black belt. But it doesn't make it easy! Like anything else in BJJ, you have to put things into action with practice.
So, if you struggle with your grips burning out during BJJ competitions and rolling, then I hope the video helps.

I roll with white, purple, and black belts in this video with the same goal in mind during the roll:
Hit my NEW Arm Bar technique.
When you train Brazilian Jiu-jitsu it's good to flow, it's also beneficial to have specific goals during your live training like I did today.
Whether you're training MMA, Wrestling, BJJ, etc., intentional practice is pretty useful, in my opinion.

We’ve all been there at some point.
One of the times in my BJJ when I felt like this was when I was training at a super tough gym as a Brown Belt. I was visiting and wanted to get some tough training. I got exactly what I wanted, but it was tough! I remember even the blue belts were killing me by the end of it.

These include 6 pretty fundamental drills from the guard. These would be great for any White Belt trying to build good movement from the position. But you could also use them at any belt level to get a good Brazilian Jiu-jitsu style workout in.
Right now, in the gym we are doing a ton of standing work in the gym. Takedowns, throws, etc. So I wanted to get away from it during the drilling class to move in some other directions. .
These drills are a great way to build up your timing from closed guard and they're low impact on the body, but still very effective (in my bearded opinion)
Hopefully you find these BJJ drills helpful for your training.

She's really flexible!
The problem is that she has TOO MUCH of it.
She said she recently started training and was informed by her coach that she has hyper mobility.
She says when she stretches that she doesn't feel the stretches and wants to practice BJJ without doing harm to her body as a result of her hyper mobility.
She was wondering if I could give her any insight on stretches/tips that would come in handy for someone like her who has hyper mobility, who also trains Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
I give my thoughts and share a similar experience that we had with this issue in the gym with one of my Brown Belts, Patrick.

He was watching a technique video from Henry Akins, learning a move called the "Soul Stealer" and some options from there.
He's been experiencing some success with the Akins technique on the younger people in the gym, allowing him to really slow down rolls.
But his coach came up to him the other day in practice and told him that the position was dangerous and is not a good option for where Antwon is now in his technical progression.
Antwon ask me if he should follow his coach's advice until he's more experienced, or should he call BS and do what works for him now (the technique that is backed by a world renown Brazilian jiu-jitsu Black Belt)
Here's what I think...

I'm filming this because it came up in my recent Chewjitsu BJJ camp here In Louisville, KY.
We had about 26 people come out and train some Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It was great!
One of the things I like doing during the camps is to have the campers do Ice baths and try some breathing exercises that I personally practice.
In today's video I show you guys an exercise I use to practice breathing through your stomach, rather than your chest.
The exercise in this video is called 90/90 breathing and is for anyone who can't breathe into their stomach vs. just breathing into their chest. When we are at rest the goal is to breathe very deep into our stomachs so that we can recover properly.
Hopefully if you train Jiu-Jitsu, then this video is useful for you.

So, the interesting conversation that popped up is one that I think could serve many of you guys in the BJJ community (or in life)
The idea is focused on my lack of expectations for this weekend's tournament.
I got asked from a competitor out of Chicago "How did you NOT expect this thing to be huge? you have all these followers?!"
I told him something that may suprise you...
I didn't set any expectations.
In this video I 'll dive deeper into how this form of thinking started and how it has helped me in BJJ, Business, and Life. And, hopefully how it can possibly help you out to.

He said that this last he's been competing in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and winning tons of gold medals. He said recently, he was getting ready for a competition, one of the biggest ones in the country and leading up to it his teammates and coaches were very confident in his abilities to have success at the tournament.
He goes out to the competition and loses first round, by 2 points, to the person who would eventually go and win the bracket.
He sends me a message saying that "I let my coach down, what do I do?"
I asked him WHY he believed he let his coach down. His reply was "I did not live up to the expectations everyone had for me."
So, I questioned him. Asking him, based upon which actions from them, his coaches and friends, made him feel like he let them down.
You might be surprised at his response, and honestly, this is probably how most coaches feel. If you're ever feeling let down about a loss at a Jiu-jitsu competition, then maybe this conversation between myself and the messenger can be useful to you.

In the video I'll share some details on the basic rear naked choke from back mount. From there I'll show 3 different variations that I've used over the years both in BJJ competitions and MMA spanning back all the way to when I was a Blue Belt back in 2005.
Hope the choke details help you and your BJJ!

The question comes from Christian who is newer to BJJ, but his biggest worry is about rolling with other White Belts who finish submission too quickly.
He asked, "is this a valid concern? or is this something I need to get used to?"
Of course, White Belts are going to be a little spazzy, but this definitely IS a valid concern.
In this video I'll explain to you how I'd approach training safely as a White Belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu against other White Belts in BJJ, and how to train safely in general, regardless of belt rank.
Hopefully you find these Ideas useful for you.

He says that he knows his coaches believe what they're saying. The issue is this...
He doesn't see it.
He asked me "How do you discover something about yourself that other see, but that you don't necessarily see in yourself?"
In this video I go into a few stories about times in my life I felt like an imposter, and no matter what anyone told me I didn't believe I had "IT", just like Marshall.
If you're feeling like Marshall, I'll also give you a really simple way to "update" your identity a little faster, so that you can see what your coaches are seeing & so that you can develop a real superpower, SELF TRUST, that is often developed by going through certain tough situations whether that's through training Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Wrestling, MMA Fighting, etc.
Hopefully you find the ideas in this video useful for you.

I'm 38, a little bit younger than Mark, but right in that range where recovery is even more important as we age.
Because of that, today I wanted to show you guys what I do to recover on a semi-daily basis.
The stuff that I show you in this video is geared more towards the days where I am rolling BJJ. If I was lifting, then some of the things I do in this video would be a little bit different.
Anyways, I jump into a few ideas on recovery like Ice baths, stretching, foam rolling, massage gun usage, supplements, sleep, etc. that I find to be useful for my recovery and longevity as an aging grappler.
Hopefully a few of these ideas can be useful for you.

In my honest opinion, I believe that this idea of "Old Man" BJJ is a bit BS and even a bit restrictive.
This all comes from a recent story of this "older" Brown belt, Tim, rolling with one of our black belts, Mark, who has an insanely difficult guard to pass.
Tim felt like his "Old Man" BJJ style was not working against this specific type of guard. But, Eventually Tim breaks the rules and try's some "Young Man" BJJ & a looser style of passing.
He stands up and he starts trying to pass side-to-side to get through the guard instead of smash passing low.
When Tim does this, he notices that he starts to get reactions out of the younger Black Belt, and although he couldn't finish the pass, he felt like made a ton more progress in the roll.
In this video I'll talk about the downside of putting a label on your BJJ as it relates to your age (like Tim did here), your weight, height, etc., and how far too often we rely on these labels to search for SIMPLE solutions to complex problems.

He asked, what "No Slams" means in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
He wants to know if he can do a Double Leg and elevate his opponents or if the rule specifically permits BJJ practitioners, in competition, from literally just picking their opponents up and slamming them on the ground from guard.
In this video I'm going to explain when it is ok to "slam" people in BJJ and when it is NOT.
Hopefully this answers the question clearly!

I'm sharing this with you guys to show you how I personally like to drill and how I use this type of workout to really level up my cardio for BJJ.
I just got back from taking a month off, so drilling like this has been a great way to shake off the rust and get back into Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
Focused drilling sessions are one of my favorite ways to get Jiu-jitsu cardio in, and I would recommend you try it out.
In this video we did a ton of movement drills with the focus on mastering the fundamental movements. You can try to implement these movements to your own training if you'd like.
Hopefully, if you're trying to get back in shape for grappling, these movements can be useful to you.

With that in mind, he says his favorite way to train BJJ is No-Gi.
Recently however, he decided that he wanted to pursue more Gi training, going up to his coach, letting him know about his injuries, and was looking for some grip fighting tips from his coach.
After the talk with his coach, Aaron says that his coach threw in a little dig. Saying:
"By the way, the Gi is more technical than No-Gi..."
Apparently, this led into a whole rant, and may have triggered Aaron a bit, who believes that both No-Gi and Gi are technical, just different.
He asks if I believe his instructor actually made a good point or not? and if I think that Gi is more technical than No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Here's what I think...

"Chewy what is the worst screw job you've seen in a Brazilian jiu-jitsu competition."
Well, after training BJJ for so long and watching so many matches, you might be surprised that I have seen a ton of "screw jobs".
BJJ competitions tend to be famous for egregious calls in tournaments, which can be pretty annoying as an athlete, coach, or even spectator who is trying to understand the sport.
In this video, I share one bad call that I have experienced both as a coach and then one particularly bad call I experienced as an athlete in a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competition as a Blue Belt.
Hope you find these ideas useful.
Also, let me know down in the comments below if you've gotten any horrible calls and let me know what they were.

Fortunately, or unfortunately, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu also opened him up to aversity that he wasn't used to. For example, he found out that he is a quitter. Whenever things start getting tough in the rolls, he just gives up. By the way, these are his words, not mine.
When his coaches initially noticed the issue, they kind of gave him a pep talk. However, over some time they just stopped trying.
His question to me is if I have any advice on how to overcome the mental block that he recently discovered when he trains BJJ, and how he can grow his "fighting spirit."
So, in this video I'll answer his questions and tell you guys about how I personally had to develop my own "fighting spirit" and grit through BJJ, and even tell exactly what I had to tell myself DAILY to do it. I'll also share the rough inner dialogue I sometimes had going on in my head after training sessions.
I hope you guys can find these ideas useful.

One of my guys was having trouble defending it today in class, so I thought I'd share what we discussed here too.
This is a pretty common pass in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, both Gi and No-Gi. In fact, it's also one of my personal favorite passes.
With that being said, every BJJ technique has counters and defenses & I wanted to show you a few of my favorite options here.
Getting stacked sucks. So, hopefully there's a few ideas here that you find helpful.

Well, today was my very first training session back in about a month and I could feel it. If you're older and do BJJ you probably know exactly what I'm talking about.
As you age in BJJ you can really tell the difference that a long break makes. I'm not "old" in the sense of full life. But I am for BJJ. That being said, in my mid 30s I definitely don't recover the same as I did when I was 25.
Anyways, I wanted to share a couple ideas with you guys in relation to getting back to training BJJ after a serious injury, health issue, or whatever else took you off the mat.
Hopefully you find these ideas useful to you.

Sadly, what happen to John will, at some point or another, happen to every Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competitor. I know it's happened to me plenty of times. And if you're not ready for the situation it can definitely throw you off and potentially ruin your performance. As was the case with John,
He said he did ok at the competition, but he felt like all the changes threw his game off and he wonders if I've ever experienced something like this, and If so, how do I deal with it?
So, in the video I explain an important idea for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competitions to keep your mindset in the right place and how to deal with unforeseen situations that happen at competitions.

Steve's question to me is whether or not I believe you should go to a low Mount or if you should get to a high Mount which is very common and very effective in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
His question is focused on which mounted BJJ position, would be more effective in a Street fight situation, against an untrained person. So in the video I share some ideas on how to use mount in a Hand-to-hand fighting situation on DUH STREETZ. And I share why I really like low mount vs an untrained person.

He is a former Wrestler who got into BJJ, and he was pretty good at it, and the other day he was rolling with a blackbelt in the room.
Well, he tells me that he is pretty competitive, and during the roll, at some point, he got a little rough with the black belt.
Well, the black belt didn't like that and decided he was going to put it on Bob. The Black Belt wasn't a jerk about it after the roll and even told Bob that this was basically a teachable moment and they moved on.
Bob felt really sorry after the roll, not meaning to roll too rough with anyone, including the Black Belt...
But, after some thought, Bob got pretty upset about the way the Black Belt handled things, seeing as he wasn't trying to be disrespectful.
Bob wants to know if I think he's being unreasonable and how I interpret situations like this in BJJ.

Bob says that his buddy, the fellow black belt from another gym, is coming to train with him. Which he is happy about. However, his friend keeps showing up 45 minutes late to the classes he attends.
He interprets these late appearances as a form of laziness on his friend's behalf, or maybe he just doesn't want to do warmups. And he believes he does it because he's a Black Belt and feels like he can do it. Regardless, he's not sure what's up.
At Bob's gym, attendance is pretty strict, and he wants to know how I'd handle a situation where a someone is chronically late to classes and if I have ever faced a similar situation, and if so, how I dealt with it.
In the video I'll explain what I think and give you some ideas on BJJ warmups too.

Regardless of your prior grappling experience, White Belts of all backgrounds tend to struggle pretty often escaping side control and just feel stuck.
The tip that I am going to share with you in this video works for side control, mount, or any defensive position, but can be really useful for side control specifically.
This technique/idea made escaping side control way easier for me, and hopefully for you newer white belts watching, or anyone else, it can also be a useful idea that'll help your game too.

Well, a few classes in, Bob's coworker & Bob finally rolled.
In the Roll Bob takes it easy, even allowing his friend to submit him when they rolled. The issue began after the roll when Bob's co-worker says "Hah, you couldn't even get me." This being said after their light roll (where Bob was just playing).
Well to make it worse, a few days later at their place of work, the co-worker also boasted about the roll against Bob & the Head Instructor; embarrassing Bob and leaving him frustrated about what to do next.
This obviously rubbed Bob the wrong way and he is wondering if he should: confront his co-worker directly about the issue, have a talk with the coach, let it go, or if I had any other ways to resolve the problem in mind...
