This year we are heading to Eastern Europe to see what Christmas Markets looking like in that part of the world. Our first stop, the capital city of Slovakia which is Bratislava. We visited two different Slovakian Christmas markets in the old town and were pleasantly surprised to say the least.
Our first stop was in Main Square (Hlavné námestie) where the Old Town Hall is located which is also a great place to get a bird eye view of the Christmas Market by climbing the clock tower. This market had more Christmas food options than we had ever seen in any other holiday market around Europe. Arrive hungry! Popular food items at the Bratislava Christmas market include traditional Slovak dishes like fried meat in a roll (cigánska), potato pancakes (lokše) and fried dough (langoš). Sweeter options include chimney cake (trdelník), and warm drinks such as spiced honey mead (medovina) and mulled wine (varené víno) are also staples.
Our second stop was the Christmas Market in Hviezdoslav Square (Hviezdoslavovo námestie) which is more a promenade style market with one row of kioske also selling different drink and food but the one that won our hearts was the pork grilled on open fire. Some of the best ham we have ever hate and such an iconic Christmas food as well.
As Christmas foodies, this is one of our favorite European Christmas Market of all times. Of course they had arts and crafts and different items that make perfect Christmas gift but food was truly the star everywhere you looked.
