All proceeds go to the United Way of SWVA to help the people of Damascus, VA. Strength of Music Relief Benefit Nov 1st from 9pm-Close To be held at Capone's in downtown Johnson City, TN. A diverse lineup of local rock music. All proceeds go to the victims of Helene and those in need. 49 Winchester at the ETSU Martin Center Nov 30th at 7:30pm 49 Winchester and Chancellor Lawson play the ETSU Martin Center on November 30th, and you'll want to get your tickets early. All proceeds go to Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee. There are other shows throughout East Tennessee and the surrounding area (especially Western North Carolina). The Bijou Theater in Knoxville will host a great lineup on October 27th, including Darrell Scott, Adeem the Artist and Larkin Poe. Sturgill Simpson will play on October 21st in Cary, NC, replacing the show he was forced to cancel in Asheville. Eric Church and Luke Combs have also scheduled a large benefit show to raise funds for those affected in Western North Carolina. To be held in Charlotte, the show will also feature Billy Strings, James Taylor and others to be announced later. What’s Cooking: Magic Wok in Johnson City timesnewsonline 2024-10-10 | When Chao Wang took over the Magic Wok from his uncle, it already had two decades under its belt. Restaurants don’t last two decades - three decades now - unless they do things well, and the Magic Wok in Johnson City does things very well. With a menu that offers American-Chinese dishes and traditional Szechuan dishes, you can get food you’re used to and try new dishes that might become favorites. The food is always seasoned well, full of flavor, and served with a freshness not always found at “American” Chinese restaurants. “We are a little bit different than other Chinese restaurants,” says Wang, “because most of the restaurants around the Tri-Cities area they do either American-Chinese food, or Chinese and Japanese together or cook the American food, but we are different. We have two different menus. One is the American-Chinese food menu and the second is the authentic Chinese food menu.” “American-Chinese food is based on the sauce, pretty much the restaurants have the same thing, like a white sauce, brown sauce, general sauce and a garlic sauce. The sauce is pre-made. Authentic food is no sauce. Everything is add-on. The seasoning is add-on.” Not leaving dishes in sauce as they wait, or covering dishes in a pre-made sauce, each dish at Magic Wok comes out fresh and flavorful. Chao also uses corn starch in his dishes, rather than flour, so there is no thick breading around his meat when it comes to the table. “A lot of people want to eat gluten-free, and the corn starch is also gluten free,” according to Wang. “Plus the meat tastes fresher and it isn’t under a layer of flour and breading.” While the menu is wonderful and the food is fresh, a good part of Magic Wok’s reputation is built on his soups. The hot and sour soup is a longtime favorite at my house (and our office) and the wonton and egg drop soups have made their fans as well. Chao credits the flavor of his famous hot and sour soup to the use of real meat, rather than a reliance on tofu for the menu staple. “Our won ton is big,” says Wang. “Then we have chicken broth in there, and add vegetables like cabbage, water chestnuts, carrots and green onions. Most restaurants are only two pieces of won ton and the broth, that’s all.” “Our hot and sour soup is like an old fashioned hot and sour soup. We use pork, black mushroom and carrots, instead of tofu and other vegetables.” Wang recognizes that the most popular dishes on Chinese menus in America are heavily breaded, such as General Tso’s chicken and sesame chicken, but his recipe (as stated before) doesn’t use the flour to create a thick crust. Instead, he relies on the meat and spices to alone to offer the same flavor palette in a healthier style. He also recommends the Cumin Beef with Cilantro and the Chicken or Beef with Leeks from the authentic menu. You can find the Magic Wok at 701 South Roan Street in Johnson City. The restaurant is closed on Tuesdays, so plan your trip throughout the week and come ready for big flavors and large portions.

Melissa Taylor, RN, BSN, CHEP, is an emergency preparedness nurse consultant for the Tennessee Department of Health specializing in emergency response planning and responder mental health. She serves as a first responder and disaster mental health/crisis response strike team responder and spoke with us about her mission during the recovery effort. The Strike Team provides mental health first aid, crisis intervention, and triage after disasters and traumatic events.
