Thanks to PCBWay.com/?from=atomic for the fantastic PCBs and SMT assembly.
ESP-IDF 6 is here, so let’s get it installed and running properly in Visual Studio Code.
In this video, I walk through setting up ESP-IDF v6.0.1 using the VS Code ESP-IDF extension, creating a new Blink project for an ESP32-S3, configuring the project with menuconfig, flashing the board, monitoring the serial output, and even getting JTAG debugging working.
We’ll cover:
00:00 ESP-IDF 6 is out
00:23 Installing the prerequisites
00:49 Setting up the ESP-IDF VS Code extension
01:18 Using the ESP-IDF installation manager
02:30 Downloading and installing ESP-IDF tools
04:21 Creating a new Blink project
06:06 Using menuconfig / SDK configuration
07:24 Building and flashing the ESP32-S3
08:17 Fixing flash settings, CPU speed, and flash size
09:48 Enabling PSRAM
10:52 Fixing JTAG / OpenOCD issues
11:56 Debugging with breakpoints in VS Code
13:27 ESP-IDF vs Arduino — which do you prefer?
