The earliest evidence for vertebrates in the fossil record are the EXTERNAL 'teeth' of jawless fishes found in rocks dating from the late Cambrian Period.

In an attempt to learn more about these 'odontodes', Dr Haridy and colleagues set out to create high resolution 3D images. What she discovered was one of the most remarkable cases of mistaken identity and convergent evolution, but that was only the start!

Through her work, she was not only able to determine the true identity of these 'teeth', but even managed to explain why we get toothache!
