In this video, UDoIt demonstrates the installation of Schneider Electric HEPD50 Whole House Surge Protection Device. This device suppresses surges that could damage electronic devices, including appliances, computers, smart home equipment, LED lighting, and more. More importantly, it would help to shield your fire detection and fire suppression devices from these same surges.
IMPORTANT
It is advised that you consult a licensed electrician to perform any electrical work. Installing the whole house surge suppression involves working with the electrical load center, which is also known as a breaker box or electrical panel to some. There are many factors to consider. For instance, you may not have enough slots in your panel to install this device since a double pole breaker is required. You may need to install a sub-panel just to accommodate this protection device.

INSTALLATION
The HEPD50 comes with a significant length of wire for connecting within your electrical panel. Depending upon your configuration, you may be able to connect the suppressor directly to the panel as I did with mine. Otherwise, you may need a separate electrical box to house the surge protection device and conduit to connect to the panel.
On my panel, I punched out one of the knockouts on the bottom. The nut that comes with the surge protection device must first be removed. I then routed the wiring through the knockout hole and affixed the nut from within the inside of the panel. Using pliers I tighten the nut while maintaining the orientation of the suppressor.
If you are installing this on the main panel the ground and neutral bars are bonded together. While a sub panel installation requires the ground connected to the ground bar and the neutral connected to the neutral bar. The ground wire is green and the neutral wire is white. The two lines L1 & L2, which are both black, are connected to the double pole 30Amp breaker terminals.
WHY WHOLE HOUSE SURGE SUPPRESSION
We've all experienced power surges. They come from storms causing power lines to arc, lighting, large power equipment cycling power, and many other reasons. Your equipment may also be causing power surges, such as your refrigerator, freezer, HVAC, air compressor, and large power tools. These surges can sometimes exceed the safe threshold of sensitive electronics, which could reduce their lifespan or destroy them.
By installing a whole house surge protection device like the Square D HEPD50 by Schneider Electric, you can have some peace of mind with your electronics. I first installed an HEPD80 in our home because I was welding. The welder was causing all of our Phillips Hue smart bulbs to turn on and in some cases completely stop working. Since installing the HEPD80, we have not experienced any glitches with our smart home devices.
That is why I am installing the HEPD50 on this other panel, to protect against frequent power surges that occur at the Jersey Shore, especially during the summer months.
