Aged cheddar that’s ahead of its time

The Toasted Cheddar Chalupa has arrived at Taco Bell. And take it from us: it’s not your momma’s Chalupa. Sure, our original Chalupa is one of the finest items to ever grace our menu board. But the Toasted Cheddar Chalupa is for the gentleperson with refined taste, because it’s got 6-month-aged cheddar toasted right onto the iconic Chalupa shell. Yes, you heard right: six-month aged cheddar. An addition like that is truly something special and one that’s poised to change the Taco Bell world (and the world at large, really) forever. This begs the question, what should we do while we’re waiting for that cheddar to age to perfection? We heard (maybe made up) that it takes exactly 5 months and 29 days to return to Earth from Mars. Imagine being in a spaceship for that long, waiting for a Toasted Cheddar Chalupa. Food for astronauts has always looked pretty wack. While the astronaut ice cream we used to get on elementary school trips to the science museum was pretty good, those poor space travelers can’t really enjoy a cooked meal –let alone one toasted to flaky, cheddary perfection. If you’re ready for a Chalupa that’s out of this world (nope, not sorry about that one at all), go ahead and please your palate with the Toasted Cheddar Chalupa - available for a limited time and at participating locations only.

It was a strong year for new barbecue in the area, and this one has the added accolade of being the work of two women, something rare in the ‘cue world. Award-winning pitmaster Lee Ann Whippen (you may have seen her on BBQ Pitmasters and Throwdown With Bobby Flay) has partnered with Jennifer Daskevich, the 2013-2014 World Sandwich Champion who has won more than $100,000 in competitive cooking prizes, to open this casual South Tampa order-at-the-counter spot with picnic tables and appealing front-porch seating. With the tagline “meat with attitude,” the most interesting thing they are doing is the restaurant’s namesake dish, a riff on the classic Tampa deviled crab, only this one stuffs the nubby brown breaded football about the size of a baked potato with smoked pulled pork. They also do a “‘Queban,” a Cuban jazzed up with smoked brisket, pulled pork, smokehouse bologna and all the traditional accessories on La Segunda bread. It’s metal trays with paper liners and plastic foam ramekins for sides, nothing fancy, but the range and quality of house-made sauces (one mustardy, one sweet and tomatoey, one noticeably spicy and another one lush and white) will make you giddy.

and wrapped into a burrito shell. Our extremely official scientific spice research team hunted far and wide for the hottest pepper we could find, which made for a lot of burned tongues and landed us in sunny Rock Hill, South Carolina. That’s where we stocked up on gallons and gallons of water and went to sample the famed Carolina Reaper Pepper—a Ghost Pepper x Habanero hybrid that clocks in at scorching speeds and was literally declared the World’s Hottest Chili Pepper by the Guinness Book of World Records. We say that’s about as legit as it gets.

Yeah, it’s spicy, but Taco Bell’s not here to hurt you. We got this dish right. We mixed the Carolina Reaper with craveable ranch to make a creamy sauce that kicks, but won’t burn your mouth house down. We poured it all over those perfectly crisp, boldly-seasoned fries and then topped it with grilled steak for some extra sizzle.

Reaper Ranch sauce and sizzling steak make this one the ultimate one-upper. How do you top a favorite like Taco Bell’s Nacho Fries? How about turn up the heat and slap on some meat? That’s what we did when we were challenged to one-up America’s favorite fries and came up with the Steak Reaper Ranch Fries Supreme. Though it wasn’t that simple—we took some nuance with it, of course.

Our extremely official scientific spice research team hunted far and wide for the hottest pepper we could find, which made for a lot of burned tongues and landed us in sunny Rock Hill, South Carolina. That’s where we stocked up on gallons and gallons of water and went to sample the famed Carolina Reaper Pepper—a Ghost Pepper x Habanero hybrid that clocks in at scorching speeds and was literally declared the World’s Hottest Chili Pepper by the Guinness Book of World Records. We say that’s about as legit as it gets.

Yeah, it’s spicy, but Taco Bell’s not here to hurt you. We got this dish right. We mixed the Carolina Reaper with craveable ranch to make a creamy sauce that kicks, but won’t burn your mouth house down. We poured it all over those perfectly crisp, boldly-seasoned fries and then topped it with grilled steak for some extra sizzle.

the Justice League inspired Batman Burger #hongkong, aka the Diner Double Beef Burger. This is a double cheeseburger with a fried egg added to it, w/ a black pepper sauce on top and a peppered mayonnaise on the bottom. Also, this exact burger was also released at the
Minions "Eggcellent Silly Double Beef Burger.
How to make this happen w/out traveling back in time and to Hong Kong,get yourself a McDouble minus all toppings excepts onions,
not a Double Cheeseburger because this only has one slice of cheese.Get an Egg McMuffin, remove the egg and do what you will w/ the rest. Buy Black Pepper sauce, we got ours from the local MD Oriental Market for $2.99.
Then take some mayo and liberally sprinkle it w/ large black pepper flakes. Combine and enjoy... or don't.
