Check out Yond: https://www.yond.studio/
Starting a motion design studio is a daunting task, but it's exactly what a group of my friends have done at Yond. This dynamic team complements each other so well with their individual skill sets that they have broken into the motion design scene with force, and in this interview, we'll learn about how they've found their success. We cover all aspects of a motion design project, from client interactions to concepting and asset creation. We'll even get into some animation breakdowns in After Effects. This conversation gives excellent insight into what it takes to form a studio and create fantastic work.
Thanks so much to Kyle, Alesis, and Andrew for taking the time to give us a glimpse into how they work together.

After Effects has released over 100 new animation presets in the past few years, but unless you're digging through the presets folder and applying them yourself, you'd never know they were there! That's why I did the dirty work for you. I've consolidated each and every one of the new presets into a single project file divided into their own comps and organized by date and category for easy viewing and access. Don't sleep on these presets! They're masterfully crafted and ready to use in any project.

Overlord 2 is here at last. One of the most successful third-party tools for After Effects has gotten a major upgrade, and now operates independently of Adobe software.
Some of the many new features and quality-of-life improvements include:
• Dependable Linear & Radial Gradient transfer
• Clipping masks become Ae track mattes
• Preservation of parametric rectangles & ellipses
• Support for text on a path
• Ai groups transfer as Ae shape layers
• Split Ai shapes to Ae shape layers with group layer controls
• Transfer guides
• Transfer swatches
There's much more to learn about Overlord 2, and many more features to come. Soon Overlord will be able to transfer from Figma and Photoshop to After Effects, with the potential for supporting other apps in the future.

Text animators are easily one of the most confusing features of After Effects, but they're also one of the most powerful. If you can get over the initial hurdle of understanding how they behave and how to modify them, you'll infinitely upgrade your efficiency when it comes to animating text. And that's exactly what I'm going to teach you how to do in this video. Plus I'm giving away all of the presets (and more) that I made in this video, so don't miss those!

Reece Parker is a multi-talented artist and director behind some of my favorite animated projects. Besides the several projects he's created for Battle Axe, his portfolio is full of projects for clients like Amazon, Apple, Google, Microsoft, Meta, IBM, Netflix, Spotify....the list goes on. But even with all of those big-name brands, Reece still takes time to make personal projects regularly, and I think that's contributed to his success as an animation director.
In this short conversation, I pick Reece's brain about what a cel animator does, how Reece got his start, the software he uses, and his process for animating something by hand. We talk about claymation, Adobe Animate, Procreate Dreams, using Timelord for Photoshop, and how to bring it all together for a completed animation.

One of the things that gets me most excited about Rive is the ability to blend timelines together into a single animation. You're able to work on different aspects of the same assets one at a time and then combine them all to create a much more complex animation. And the best part is, it's extremely simple to do.
In this tutorial I'll show you how I created the animation for the Transform Sammich product page on the Battle Axe website, combining two separate timelines into one animation using the State Machine and animation layers. Rive has captured my attention and gotten me excited to animate in a way After Effects hasn't in a very long time. In this tutorial, I'm going to get you up to speed with working in Rive, navigating the workspace, designing elements, and putting them in motion with keyframes. As an After Effects user, it's extremely easy to pick up and start making motion design projects right away. Plus it's completely free to try out with a free Rive plan.
I'll walk you through your first Rive animation project, making connections between the After Effects workflow you're used to and how to work similarly in Rive.
I think you're really going to like Rive, especially once we get into some of the unique animation features it has over After Effects. Make sure you're subscribed and stay tuned for more Rive tutorials coming very soon.

Adobe added a few updates to the After Effects Beta that I'm VERY excited about. There's a UI theme refresh, GPU accelerated UI responsiveness on Windows, pasting keyframes across multiple layers, and pasting reversed keyframes!
Let me know what you think about these updates and what you'd like to see improved next in After Effects

Creating natural, realistic-looking shadows in After Effects is complicated, slow to render, and hard to manipulate -- until now! I've created a set of presets for After Effects that allow you to instantly add realistic shadows to any layer with controls that make it extremely easy to manipulate their appearance. You can even use a single layer as a controller for all the layers that use the presets in a comp at once AND use the position of the controller to control which direction the shadows are being cast! Plus I added a preset for adding a customizable light source that adapts to the layer it's parented to and creates a great-looking light to compliment the shadows.

You've probably already checked out Rotobrush 3.0 in After Effects, BUT have you tested out the latest version available in the beta version of After Effects? The AE dev team is actively working on improvements and you can try them out RIGHT NOW! With the latest update, you should see improvements in the time it takes to freeze the propagated frames, as well as how long it takes to unfreeze, make changes, and refreezing.
In this video I quickly test out the beta version and compare it to the standard version of AE using the same clip.

I'm going to show you how to use the new Advanced 3D Render Engine in Adobe After Effects 2024 to create a flat-shaded extruded button using TRUE 3D geometry! We'll also learn how to write some expressions to link the position of the layer to its extrusion so we can easily control which direction the extrusion moves, and we'll even create an almost isometric 3D camera. And if you don't want to make your own, I created a template 3D button with lots of customizable controls so you can instantly build your own without any of the work! It dynamically updates to the size of the text and is fully animatable through essential properties and the essential graphics panel. And since it uses essential properties, you can have as many custom instances of the button rig as you want without duplicating any precomps!

It happened AGAIN. I tried learning something I didn't know much about the usual way, by googling, and it was a frustrating process. Then I asked ChatGPT and got the answers I was looking for immediately!
And besides just learning Blender, ChatGPT also helped me create two Add-ons that make lighting scenes SO much easier! I now have a Target Light option in my lights menu and a Cyc Wall object in the Mesh menu. Each Add-on has custom controls that help you light a scene and create a seamless backdrop for your models. In this video, I'll tell the story of how I used ChatGPT to learn Blender and make my lighting process so much faster.

What are the BEST character rigging tools for After Effects? Well, I know my top 3, and in this video I'm going to compare them all. Even though After Effects was never meant for character animation, third-party developers have made it possible for us to rig and animate characters. Each tool does things differently and has both strengths and weaknesses. By the end of this video I hope you can decide for yourself which tool is best for the job.

3D models are starting to feel like a natural part of After Effects, and the updates just keep coming! 3D model import has been possible in the beta version of After Effects for a while now, but the dev team is really pushing what's possible lately. In this video, I'll show you how to work with 3D models in After Effects, and how to use features that were recently released. Image-based lighting with HDRIs, voxel-based shadows, and the new Adobe Standard Material is making 3D much more interesting in After Effects.

Most motion designers don't have a good idea of who makes the third-party tools we use on a daily basis, so I hope this puts a face to the name of Battle Axe, and you come out of it realizing that we're not Adobe :).
This is the first of what I hope to be many episodes in this format. If there are any other tool developers you'd like me to speak with on my channel, be sure to let me know in the comments!

In this video, I'll show you my complete process for rigging the Ninja Turtles using Rubberhose 3 from Battle Axe. We'll start by transferring the Illustrator artwork to After Effects easily using Overlord. Next, we'll rig the character using Rubberhose 3, replacing the arms and legs artwork with hoses, and parenting other artwork layers to the hoses. Then I'll show you how to make custom controls for more advanced rigging features like the color of the character, prop selectors, mouth shapes, and even facial controls. With everything in place, I'll show you how to use the Rig to EGP feature of Rubberhose 3 to create a source comp that can be reused over and over as a precomp with access to all of the custom rig controls we've created. It's an incredible workflow and unlocks so many possibilities for what can be done with characters in After Effects.

Easing keyframes is one of the most essential things you need to know how to do in Adobe After Effects. I really believe you should know how to use the graph editor, both the Speed and Value graphs, to shape the motion you're trying to create, but sometimes that can be a very time-consuming process. Fortunately, there have been a handful of really great third-party tools developed for After Effects that help make easing keyframes much easier and more efficient. In this video, I'm going to share my top recommendations for scripts and extensions to help with easing keyframes in After Effects that I believe are worth your consideration. All of these tools will help you get the motion you're after more quickly. I'll cover what each tool does and then compare them to each other.

Rubberhose 3 is here! This incredible After Effects extension has been rewritten from the ground up and is packed with new features. In this video I'll walk you through all of the major new features and how to use them. Here are just a few of them:
- Bend along any point of the hose
- Multiple bends on a hose
- Parent any layer to a hose
- Convert a Shape Layer path into a hose
- Major RubberRig improvements
And that's just scratching the surface. Creating, animating, and modifying character rigs has never been easier. With version 3, harnessing the power of the essential graphics power is at your fingertips, allowing you to use multiple instances of the same character rig with completely different animations.
There's so much I want to show off, but there's no way I could contain it all in one video. If there's a specific feature or workflow you're interested in, be sure to leave a comment letting me know.

In this video I'm going to walk you through my experience using Klutz GPT, an After Effects extension that allows you to access Chat GPT directly inside After Effects and is tailored to writing, applying, and debugging scripts and expressions. I have no script writing experience but was still able to use Klutz GPT to successfully create 3 useful, completely working scripts for After Effects. This blew my mind. Even better, through the process of working with the AI, I was able to start picking up on how the javascript code was working, and actually began to understand it and make my own modifications. The AI literally taught me how to code. If that doesn't get you excited about AI, I don't know what will. I've made all three dockable script panels available to download and even converted them into Kbar scriplet versions with custom icons. Try them out for yourself and let me know what you think!

A tilt-shift lens is one of the craziest lenses you can use on a camera and it gives a surreal miniature feeling to basically anything you point it at. We can recreate this feeling in After Effects with just a few steps and layer on some other creative techniques to make boring stock footage look like it was shot with a cinema camera. I'll show you how to create a completely customizable faux tilt-shift effect and how to optimize it for render time. We'll also look at how to add some cinematic lens effects and distortions for a more analog feel, color grade the footage with Lumetri color, plus how to create a chromatic aberration RGB split. Then we'll learn how to use Photoshop to generate a depth map using AI in order to more accurately blur your shots, and how to use a third-party plugin called Depth Scanner to do the same thing for video.

In this three-part After Effects tutorial, I'm going to show you how I recreated the Cobra Kai end title from start to finish with zero third-party plugins. I'll go in-depth to show you all the little details I included to match the original composition as closely as possible. And the great thing about mine is that it's completely procedural, so you can use any graphic or text as a source and the entire composition will update. My own stock assets are available for you to download so you can follow along, as well as the final AE project file in case you don't have the time to recreate this scene for yourself. Don't forget to tag me if you share any of your results!
Part 3 will cover simulating floating ash and embers using CC Particle World to create an atmosphere for the scene. We'll also add some finishing touches and make procedural adjustments to the composition.

Duik Ángela is here, and I've got the complete guide to help you start rigging and animating characters in After Effects! Character rigging and animation is a complicated subject that takes a lot of practice to get the hang of, which is why it's so important that you really understand what you're doing before you start. Fortunately, I've created this complete beginner's guide to rigging and animating your first character using Duik Ángela. You're going to learn what kinds of considerations you need to make when designing a character for rigging, how to build a skeleton using Duik's bones system, how to automatically rig the character with Duik's auto-rig feature, the best way to clean up your rigged comp for easy access to only the controls you need, and how to use Duik's auto walk and run cycles feature to animate your character. It's a lot, but it's all here. I promise that once you're done watching this tutorial you'll have a firm grasp on everything you need to rig and animate your own characters in After Effects.

Adding texture to your motion graphics is one of the easiest ways to give them a fresh personality, and grain is one of the easiest textures you can generate. It can even be used for shading. Unfortunately, the standard noise effects in After Effects don't have much control and always have a fixed size. That's why I've come up with my own technique for generating a grain that can be resized and customized. I'm even giving away three free presets for rounding the corners of any layer, adding an effects-based inner shadow, and the chunky grain effect I teach in this tutorial.

I use Null Objects in After Effects all the time, but it's always annoyed me how they clutter up my project panel with solids. The nulls are dependent on those solid layers, so if you delete them, all instances of those solids will disappear and break your comps. The same goes for solid and adjustment layers. Wouldn't it be great if we could eliminate the solids folder altogether and create independent assets that don't rely on any other sources? Well, now you can! Introducing Void, the latest free script from Battle Axe.
Void allows you to create shape layer-based assets that replace and improve the functionality of Null Objects, Solid Layers, and Adjustment Layers. You can even use Void to replace all of the nulls, solids, and adjustment layers in a specific comp or the entire project with the click of a button. We've created a compact Script UI panel that gives you all this functionality, a Kbar button with multiple functions, AND the ability to assign keyboard shortcuts to each layer type to completely integrate Void into your regular workflow, leaving solid layers in the past.

Twisty text is a really fun, complex looking kinetic typography technique in After Effects, but it’s really not that hard to pull off. I’ll show you how to get that twisted text look with the Time Displacement effect in After Effects, and how to pull it off using Cinema 4D Lite, which is bundled with After Effects. If you haven’t taken advantage of having access to Cinema 4D with your Creative Cloud subscription, let this tutorial end that streak. Now let’s get to some twisting!
