The Edmund Optics 35 mm Fixed Focal Length Cx Series Liquid Lens is integrated into the Buccaneer Main Mission (BMM) Satellite, marking the first documented deployment of liquid lens technology in a space-borne application.
As a core component of the MANTIS (Manoeuvrable Antenna and Terrestrial Imaging System) payload, our objective assembly utilizes a Corning Vari-Optic liquid lens to provide advanced imaging capabilities.
This technology enables rapid remote focusing, with the ability for the satellite to monitor itself by taking "selfies" and can also refocus to image the earth behind it (see photo).
