I am fascinated by our desire to know the history of guitars used by our guitar heroes. The better the story the more we want to know. Well "Greeny" has a great story and I've tried to do it justice in the short history format here. I hope you enjoy learning it as much as I did.

I'm delighted to have my friend Tim Lerch back to talk about a subject important to us all...Why do we play?
From Tim's many year of teaching and his own thoughts on playing, mixed with my five watt world wanderings about learning and playing over buying gear, this seems like a great subject for an hour among friends.
Your questions will be a big part of this discussion so come prepared to be a part of it all!

I have long been a fan of both styles of Telecaster Thinline guitars. I've owned more than a few and have enjoyed them all. Not sure why it took me this long to make this particular history.
Thanks for watching,

I've wanted to have David Barber on the livestream for a couple of years now. David is one of those guys where whenever we get on the phone we have to set aside a couple of hours.
As one of the original boutique pedal designer/builders I've relied on David for information on everything from what makes a great Marshall in a box (see Beano on a Budget) to how they got a particular guitar tone on a record.
When kicking around ideas for a conversation we realized that our "essential gear" list was vastly different and we thought it would be fun to explore that with everyone...particularly the why of having a little and the why of having, well, a LOT more.
Come and join us and bring your own stories of what is essential for you to do what you do.

Before you fill the comment section, yes, I know, this turned out to be a history of Sir Paul McCartney's use of the Hofner 500/1 bass guitar...but really...how could it be anything else. I've tried to give you a good helping of that, sound examples and a bit of history all rolled in one. Hope you dig it.

There was a recent post on The Gear Page where a user said, "I don't gig. Do I really need an amp?" Jeff and I were kicking the pros and cons around and decided we'd like to do that with all of you instead. So bring your opinions and let's have at it, the digi-heads and the tube amp loyalists, come one, come all. Should be fun.

One of the best parts of working on the Tony Iommi guitars video was getting to work with Angus Clark. Angus is a long time scholar of Iommi's guitar tones and has put together a couple of tribute SG's to get those classic sounds. So if you've always wanted to know how Iommi did that, tune in and let's kick it around for an hour.

One of my most profound musical memories is hearing Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" when it came out. I had no idea music good sound, or feel, like that. So I really enjoyed digging into what Iommi used to create those tones and the choices he had to make along the way.
I hope you enjoy it.

This was tough. We lost one of the most important guitarists of my youth in Jeff Beck. It's like a chapter of my 20's has ended abruptly, without the anticipated resolution. I haven't covered every instrument he was ever pictured with of course. I try to highlight and spend time on the instruments used on the big records or concerts as those most important in the artist's career. Here of course, it's sort of "which Les Paul" and "which Stratocaster" and hey, it could be a lot worse right?
Hope you dig it.

This was so long coming! Per is one of my favorite improvisers in any genre, and I've been wanting to try to get him on the live...and here we go!
Guitarist, composer, and producer Per Nilsson has been on the metal scene for a decade or more. We're going to talk about Scar Symmetry, playing w Meshuggah, his influences and musical background and not least of which, his incredible Strandberg Signature NX True Temperment guitars.
Go to Instagram to load your questions for the stream and join in live. This is going to be great.

There aren't many types of music that ALWAYS give me chills and AC/DC does that. How is that possible? Yeah, it was part of my growing up, it was always around but I wouldn't say that I've always been a big fan..and yet.
I also think that Angus Young is one of THE most underrated soloists of all time. For rock and blues, you'd get a big chunk of it with just Angus and Billy G. Check it.

As many of you might remember, there was a time when the DGT was my only electric guitar...well I had three of them but that's another story. Now David has worked with PRS to put build an SE level DGT. I've had one for three days and I can't believe what they've created for this price point.
As Leo Fender and Paul Reed Smith know, working directly with players is the secret to creating exceptional instruments.

As I outline in the video, Les Paul Customs have been throughout my history as a listener and honestly always felt well beyond even my dreams of ownership. From KISS to Rabea Massadd, I keep coming across folks making GREAT sounds on a Custom.

I'm doing this a little upside down as I usually bring out the Short History first then do the live stream. But I have a special guest scheduled for the week after next so lets talk about the stuff that didn't fit into the Custom script tomorrow shall we?
And the special guest ...Per Nilsson from the band "Scar Symmetry" and Meshuggah! Per is one of my all time favorite improvisers and I'm very excited to have him on to talk about his music, his approach to improvising and his new signature model Strandberg guitar.
Join me with your questions and stories about Les Paul Customs, or anything else you've got on your mind here at the end of the year..

One of my first, and certainly most profound electric guitar memories was hearing "Are You Experienced" played on my father's Heathkit stereo that had been relegated to my brothers room. This is the same system that would play the first time I heard Van Halen I and Rush's "2112". Played in my brother Brian's room, tucked under the eaves of my family's 1860's farm house, playing through a single 4' tall speaker cabinet my father had also built (when he built the system records were still mono), the sound always floored me.
** So many good comments have mentioned already but this is NOT an encyclopedic listing of every guitar that Jimi ever used. Some were just in a single photo and I couldn't confirm he'd used them on stage or on a recording. So I am glad folks added them here if they were important to their knowledge of Jimi's journey.
And so the journey through the instruments of my guitar heroes continues with this issue. I hope you did it.
All the best,
Keith

My love for Esquires goes back to the 90's and Allen Hinds' recent use of just an Esquire for most of his gigs a couple of years ago was really inspiring for this.
One of the things I like about making videos at this point is being able to work with such great people from other channels. Chicago Music Exchange was VERY generous in letting me share their multiple clips on vintage Esquires here and Nathaniel, well, what can you say about a player like that!
Andertons, and Lee, the captain, of course, have also been very good working with me on these and here are they are again, very generous.
Of course friends I've made through the channel Rhett Shull and Robert Baker are both playing great stuff and were willing to let me use it again here. Without all of these folks the videos...would be quieter. :)
Hope you love it.

*** Correction: EJ had a chance to see the video and had two corrections to my research. He said he bought that band jacket in a thrift shop and it actually comes from a high school in west Texas. And the guitars that were found 24 years later were not "in a pawn" shop, they were at Heart of Texas Music, and when Eric Verified the serial numbers the woman that had brought them in gave them back to Eric, having had a suspicion they might have been stolen long ago. Thanks to EJ and his friend that reached out to clear these up for me.

Well we're firmly into "Strat-vember" now but I've been waiting to do this one and it seemed to be the right time.
For the past two weeks I've mostly been playing two Strandbergs, my Boden NX and the new Masvidalien NX (borrowed and now returned the good people at Ish Guitars). I'm been working on a number of EJ chord videos that John Cordy has made over the last few years and realized that you can do ALMOST all of EJ's tones on the bridge or bridge middle positions. I've also been digging into the EQ blocks on the Stomp and Rockett MeLody to sculpt those tones closer to what I've heard on EJ's records for years.
Now before you jump in and say "those aren't Stratocasters" (as my good friend Jeff McErlain often does) go watch EJ playing a Gibson in a video and realize that I'm exploring territory where EJ has already gone before (no surprise there.)
Thanks for checking it out. I really enjoyed making it.

I'm smart enough to know what I don't know. So though I've years reading about Gilmour's rig much of that reading was on Gilmourish.com, the passion project of my guest Bjorn Riis. We're going to cover Gilmour's amp rigs in the first half and then talk about his effects and how to get those tones with current offerings and on a budget.
Hope you dig it.

Just squeaking outside of "Strat-ober" I've planned to make this for a long time. I guess we're into "Strat-vember" now eh?
I've been playing the new American Vintage II '61 Strat for the last few weeks and I'm surprised at how much I get along with this vintage radius fingerboard and frets. With a lighter body (this guitar is just over 8lbs) the guitar might take up long term residence here. And that's sent me down the rabbit hole to looking at all my favorite wielders of the Stratocaster. More to come.
Thanks for checking it out. I love this story.

I'm smart enough to know what I don't know. So though I've been spending a good amount of time dialing in some John Mayer tones for the Line 6 pack I'm building I've also been watching videos by Justin Jeske, who's channel specializes in John Mayer and John Frusciante's gear. We'll go over the different eras of Mayers career talking about the amps and pedals, what's new over time and what has stayed the same.
No matter how you feel about Mayer's song writing, there is no question that he has been a consummate gear hound over the years and has achieved some truly beautiful blues tones.
Hope to see you there.

To hear the John Cordy intro in its entirety go here, it's great:
youtube.com/watch?v=mtf1O9WkvvI
A continuation of "Stat-ober", these videos aren't in any particular order. Of course SRV should have been before John Mayer, he being such a massive influence on John playing and choice of instrument specs. And then Jeff Beck should have been ahead of both of them and he's still to come.
But the story of how I came across SRV at the beginning of the video is one of the most profound musical memories of my life and there was never any doubt that I'd want to do the reading and a video about the most important guitars in that legacy. I hope you enjoy it.

I'm currently spending a lot of time playing and reading about Stratocasters so it seemed the right time to do this Short History. I should add that this is just John's electric guitars and I did skip some that were played in just one or two shows for the sake of making it a reasonable length. But I do spend time on the instruments that have been the most important for Mayer and the influence that those had on the guitars he'd play later.
I didn't know a lot about John Mayer prior to starting this research and I really enjoyed it. I've even added a few of his tunes to "my book". I don't tend to listen to the radio but man, you can't have missed Mayer's impact on contemporary music this past 20 years.
I hope you enjoy it.

I just had this question again this morning and I get asked so often I thought we should spend an hour kicking it around. I'll talk about amps I've owned and loved and some that have gone away and why.
My apologies if I rambled on at the expense of folks wanting to hear more from Shawn. I asked him to join at the last minute and didn't want to put him on the spot too much. I'll have him back in the future to be sure.

The first echo/delay unit I owned was a Deluxe Memory Man. I would get lost for hours, like playing my acoustic guitar in a stair well, the sound of the pair of solid state Peavey amps transformed into a cavern of sonic delight. So this has been on my list for quite a while and I thought what better time to do it than when EH has just released the Nano DMM and Andy Timmons and Keeley have just released the Halo delay.
I'm working with a new format in this video. Trying to up my screen retention and hence, get the video out to a wider audience. But it does not mean I am any less thankful to all the good people that have given me permission for use in this video. If anything, there is so much more to be thankful for as there are such amazing playing examples here by friends far and wide. (In alpha order, except for John Cordy, I mean, he wrote the music right?)
First I need to thank John Cordy for writing and recording the intro and outro music for use in the video with the "Elephant Man" DMM model in the Line 6 HX Stomp. Find more great videos everyday at John's channel: youtube.com/c/johnnathancordy
I need to thank Guitarist Magazine for permission to use the clip of Eric Johnson explaining his use of a Deluxe Memory Man in a loop on his pedalboard.

I need to thank R.J. Ronquillo for his permission to use a clip of him playing an original composition to demo the new Nano DMM.

I need to thank my friend Shawn Tubbs for his permission to use the clip of him playing the J. Rockett Clockwork delay.

I need to thank Dan and Mick of "That Pedal Show" for their permision to use the clip of Andy Timmons demo'ing the new Halo pedal on their recent show with Andy. I cut away just before Dan wiped his eyes but you can see it in both their faces as Andy plays.
youtube.com/watch?v=CMdG-WjTtgk&t=913s
A special thanks go to Perry McMannis for going through another of my scripts. There is a special echoey place in Perry's soul and I think he has the delay pedal collection to prove it.
Thanks to all of you that have stopped by to pickup a t-shirt, hoodie, or one of the new Helix/Stomp/Pod Go preset packs.
And finally a very special thanks to all of the friends of five watt on Patreon. You're the guitar community I've always dreamed of and I enjoy all of our messaging back and forth from the corners of the five watt world.

Eric Clapton established himself as a guitar hero long, long ago. The only musician to be inducted into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame in three separate bands, he's changed styles and guitars repeatedly throughout his career. Whether your favorite Clapton is with Cream, Blind Faith, Derek and the Dominos or Unplugged, there's a lot to learn from this man's catalog and his legacy.
So this was a logical next chapter in the "Guitars of our Heroes" series. I hope you enjoy it.

In 1988 I met and started studying jazz guitar with Rick Beato. Little did I know that we would become lifelong friends...despite my seeming inability to immediately ingest everything that Rick was putting in front of me. If you want to learn more about what that was like go watch my video about lessons with Rick from early in the channel.
At the time I owned a Hofner 3T, a copy of a Steinberger guitar that made it easy for me to take it on the road with me in my role as an admissions counselor. Eventually I'd buy a certified jazz box, a Fender D'Aquisto, in piano black with ebony, well, ebony everything. It was incredibly beautiful but to be honest, I never bonded with it. It was too big for me and I didn't have the hang of not getting it to feed back. But that started my love with the shape of jazz guitars and it has never really abated though now I know I'm done with my little fully hollow Gibson ES-390.
And so it was inevitable that I'd want to make this video about the first F-hole guitars and all the beautiful L5's that came later. If you're reading this I assume you have the itch too, so tell your friends. I'm just a little worried that this one might seem to esoteric to see many views. Prove me wrong, I'd love that.
Thanks for watching.

Keith

One of the reasons I love making these is that I learn so much doing it. I have never followed the Dead, separate from always enjoying Garcia's acoustic side projects with David Grissman. So diving into the history of his electrics was all new to me. To that extent, please be kind if my sources don't match yours or your memory. As I say, "please add it to the comments for everyone to enjoy", but be nice. :)

Pink Floyd was the soundtrack of my early college years and beyond. Along with Mark Knopfler, and later Pat Metheny, David Gilmour is likely my greatest influence as a guitarist...or such is my hope at least.
And so with this new series this video needed to be made and a conversation with Jeff McErlain put it in my head to do it with his long time friend Angus Clark along for the ride. I think they did an amazing job emulating Gilmour's tones here.
I hope you like it.
