How to Sketch Blueberries - loose and abstract (four ways)
In this video, I’m sharing a simple blueberry sketch from my 100 Days of Creative Drifting project—and walking you through how I created it using four different approaches.
Rather than a full recap of the days, I’m focusing on one page and using it as a starting point to explore different ways to sketch and paint the same subject.
This is a relaxed, process-based tutorial centered around curiosity, experimentation, and trying things multiple ways to see what happens.
A quick note: I’m very much a beginner when it comes to sketching and watercolor. I’m not an expert—just someone practicing, exploring, and learning as I go. If you’re in that same place, you’re in good company here.
✨ Technique 1: Water-Soluble Crayons + Watercolor + Pen
Starting with loose shapes using water-soluble crayons, adding watercolor for depth, and finishing with pen details.
✨ Technique 2: Fountain Pen Line Work + Watercolor
Using expressive line variation (thick and thin) to build form before layering in watercolor.
✨ Technique 3: Watercolor Blobs First + Pen Details
Beginning with simple watercolor shapes and color, then defining the forms afterward with pen.
✨ Technique 4: Fineliner Sketch + Watercolor
Sketching the blueberries first with a fineliner and then adding watercolor to enhance shape and dimension.
