Low back pain (LBP) is the fifth most common reason for all physician visits in the USA. Athletes are particularly at risk (especially in certain sports.)
🤓 So what does science say? What's the "best treatment"?
The 2011 study, "Treatment Options for Low Back Pain in Athletes", analyzed over 20 treatments for LBP (to find the best options for athletes.)
The conclusion?
To quote the authors:
"Despite the high prevalence of low back pain and the significant burden to the athletes, there are few clearly superior treatment modalities."
🤷♂️ Why Traditional Options Don't Work So Well:
The study examined the efficacy of several treatment options and found that:
There is no clear "winner" for fixing back pain Most modalities have no evidence they even work (versus resting)
"The treatments available are broad...but very few treatment modalities have evidence of efficacy."
🤦♂️ The reason that most of these treatments are not very effective is:
They don't take a systems approach Most are based on theory and not experience Too much responsibility is put on the therapist to "fix" the patient
Do any of these methods help people with back pain?
Absolutely!
Depending on the skill of your doctor or therapist you may find some relief. People do get some help from visiting their chiropractor, physical therapist, or acupuncturist.
😬 But, overall. it can be very "hit-or-miss".
The bottom line is: this 2011 study demonstrates, many people are left frustrated and dissatisfied with traditional options.
It's time for something better.

Science informs traditional methods (and science is great)...but it doesn't always have all the answers.
More often than not, solutions to problems come from those "in the trenches" rather than those in the lab.

18 years of sitting, studying, and computer games had finally wrecked me.
This shoulder impingement (and "quasi-modo"/hunchback posture) led to neck and shoulder pain.
It was so bad I couldn't even do basic gym movements. Movements like bench press, overhead press, or overhead squats.
One day (after yet another shoulder impingement injury) my strength and conditioning mentor got fed up.

In 2011 I began looking for non-surgical ways of treating the cam impingement, labral tear, and bone cysts in my right hip.
This led me on a long and expensive journey.
In fact, I checked my Quickbooks (to see how much I’ve spent on fixing my body) and the number actually surprised me.
In total, I've spent $25,837.29 out of pocket (which doesn't include what my insurance covered.)
👉 These costs included:
regular physical therapy chiropractic massage ...and various other treatments
The sad part is, out of all that therapy and all of those treatments, I felt only about 5% were worth it.
The rest of the time I typically felt no benefit at all.
In fact, in all those five years, I only came across two practitioners who I think are really good at what they do.
Investing $25,837.29 and spending 2-3+ hours per day (or sometimes a lot more) researching healing modalities taught me some valuable lessons and led me to one particularly great healer - Phil Petachenko in Encinitas, CA.

For example, here's what deep squat flexibility/mobility could do for you:

Pain Motivation 😩 Reason #2 to get deep squat flexibility is because pain SUCKS.
Your range of motion will decrease with age (unless you do something about it), and your body will start to break down (unless you do something about it!)

What I saw shocked me...
The instructor was on the mat rolling with a student. Suddenly, an errant elbow crushed his nose and blood 🩸 started gushing everywhere!
People around me gasped and the room got dead quiet.
🗣 I heard a few people whispering...
"Oh, this always happens with that kid" (the student).
"He's super aggressive and out-of-control."
"I avoid him at all costs."
💪 Miraculously, I didn't let this horror scene ruin my 1st day of BJJ.
I put on my Gi and started warming up.
"💩 happens! I thought... "I'm sure it was a freak accident..."
As luck would have it, no less than 20 minutes later I was face-to-face with the same student who had broken the teacher's nose.
It was time for my 1st ever no-holds-barred grappling session.
"Fuuudge..." I thought to myself.
Would lightning strike twice? Was my nose (or neck) about to get wrecked?
😅 Long story short...I didn't die.
The kid (a brown belt) certainly didn't take it easy on me.
After trying to choke, tap, submit and mangle me for 5 minutes, he finally managed to "catch me" right before the teacher yelled "TIME!"
Even though I got tapped, I was proud of myself.
🎉 I had made it 5 minutes (as a Day 1 white belt) vs. a brown belt.
Not too shabby!
In the weeks that followed, I realized I had a lot to learn.
However, I did have 2 big advantages that helped me survive intense grappling training.
I'm athletic (thanks to my strength & movement training) I'm flexible (thanks to my flexibility & mobility training)
Even though I knew ZERO BJJ techniques, I used my athleticism and mobility to my advantage.
Unfortunately, after talking with a LOT of other BJJ athletes, I found out that many aren't so lucky.
😭 Many have lots of pain and tightness in their bodies.
Many have an "injury list" a mile long...
Many even have the same problem I HAD (hip impingement).

I remember the morning when I woke up and tried to put my socks on.
The keyword is TRIED.
I had just injured my back the day before.
This was not new for me. In fact, I'd hurt my back 2-3 times before.
But this time it was different.
There was no quick recovery. No "bouncing back" as did before.
😔 My head dropped and, sheepishly, I asked my girlfriend:
"Can you put my socks and shoes on? I...can't do it."
What was worse was...
...she had to put on my socks and shoes for the next MONTH.
I was stiff. I was tight. I was weak. I was injured.
👉 Thankfully, fast forward 10+ years and life is a LOT different.
I fixed my injuries and got strong and flexible.
...and learned some valuable lessons since that fateful injury at age 26.

What struck me was NOT my wobbles (it's been a hot minute since I practiced handstands...)
...RATHER, it was my relatively clean "line" (the alignment) without any prep work!
AKA, ZERO stretching, ZERO mobilizing, ZERO preparation at all!
