#judaism #shabbat #jewishI Just Burned All Our Bread. Heres the Reason.Judaism Unpacked2026-04-03 | Most people spring clean before Passover. Jews take it to another level - then burn the evidence.
Every year, the day before Pesach, Jews destroy all their chametz - leavened food - in a ritual called Biur Chametz. The night before, you search your entire home by candlelight, with a feather and a wooden spoon. Whatever you find, you burn in the morning.
But it's not just about bread. Chametz represents ego, the part of us that puffs itself up. Matzah is flat. Humble. Pesach asks you to become that.
Would you go this far to get rid of your bread?

But the stories behind these icons are deeper than most people realize. Five of Judaism’s most recognizable symbols get unpacked here: the Star of David’s surprising rise, the Menorah’s ancient power, Chai and the number 18, the priestly hands behind the Vulcan salute, and the tablets of Sinai—plus the hidden meanings, myths, and origins most people never hear.

#judaism #history #israelThe Ancient Israelite Decision Device?Judaism Unpacked2026-02-27 | The Urim and Thummim lived inside the High Priest's breastplate, behind 12 gemstones engraved with the names of the 12 tribes.
It was consulted for the biggest national decisions. When asked, the letters on the gemstones would light up and rearrange to spell out God's answer.
But nobody agrees on how it worked. Rashi said it was a parchment with God's name inside. Maimonides rejected that entirely. Others think it was sacred lots.
And then it disappeared, the Talmud says Israel wasn't on the spiritual level to receive that kind of clarity anymore. A divine answer device.
If you could ask it one question, what would it be? 👇Are Jews Allowed In Churches?Judaism Unpacked2026-02-24 | Can Jews enter a church? 🕍✝️
Honestly, this one surprises a lot of people. The answer is yes, but with a pretty important distinction.
There's no Jewish law that says you can't walk into a church. Throughout history Jews have entered churches for all kinds of reasons, civic events, cultural visits, you name it. The building alone isn't the problem. The issue is what happens inside.
Judaism takes idolatry very seriously, and it's not just about statues. It's about the iconography, the crosses, the depictions of Jesus as divine, images of saints. Directing prayer toward these, or worshiping in a space where this is the whole point, is where Jewish law draws a hard line.
So entering a church? Generally fine. Praying there or taking part in a service? That's where it becomes not permitted.
Let us know in the comments, did you know this or did it surprise you?Why Was King David So Great, And So Dangerous?Judaism Unpacked2026-02-22 | King David is famous for one perfect moment: the sling and the giant. But Judaism refuses to end the story there. David rises from overlooked shepherd to Israel’s greatest king, unites the tribes, and makes Jerusalem the capital. Then power exposes his worst choices: Bathsheba, Uriah, and a cover up that shakes his family. David repents, but consequences follow. Why is Judaism’s greatest king so flawed?

#history #israel #kingDoes medicine have to be Kosher?Judaism Unpacked2026-02-17 | A lot of people assume Jewish dietary law applies to anything you swallow, including medicine. That assumption makes sense. Judaism takes food seriously.
But medicine isn’t treated as food in Jewish law.
Halacha draws a clear distinction between eating for nourishment and taking something for care or healing. Pills, treatments, and medical interventions fall into a different category altogether.
That’s why, when health is involved, especially when there’s real need or risk, medicine takes priority over dietary restrictions. The system isn’t rigid, it’s ordered. Values are weighed, not flattened.
This doesn’t mean kosher “doesn’t matter.” It means Judaism recognizes moments when preserving well-being comes first, and the rules respond accordingly.
Judaism isn’t about blind restriction. It’s about how values are ranked.Parsha: Why Jews Don’t Just Wait for MiraclesJudaism Unpacked2026-01-30 | When the Israelites reached the sea during the Exodus, they were stuck. An army behind them, water in front of them, no clear way out. A well-known Jewish tradition says the sea didn’t split immediately. One person, Nachshon ben Aminadav, walked in first. He kept going until the water reached his neck, and only then did the sea part.
Some people read this as a literal event, others as a story meant to teach an idea. Either way, the takeaway many Jewish commentators focus on is not waiting for a miracle, but taking initiative. Taking the step matters. Doing something, even when the outcome isn’t clear, matters.
There’s a saying many people connect with Jewish culture, “God helps those who help themselves.”
Does this idea resonate with you?The Most Jewish Dish You’ve Never Heard OfJudaism Unpacked2026-01-22 | On a Thursday night in Crown Heights, cholent takes center stage. #buddhism #spirituality #religionThe Jewish Secret Hidden in the ZodiacJudaism Unpacked2025-11-27 | Astrology seems mystical, irrational, even un-Jewish — yet it runs like a quiet thread through centuries of Jewish thought. Maimonides dismissed it entirely, Ibn Ezra saw cosmic wisdom in it, and classical texts leave room for both perspectives.
In Jewish thought, the stars do not dictate destiny. They illuminate possibility — hints of potential shaped by choice rather than fate. Even “mazal tov,” rooted in the word for constellations, becomes a reminder that the universe above serves as a mirror for purpose, meaning, and direction below.

#socialmedia #wisdom #controlThe 6 Words Every Jew D!es Saying | UnpackedJudaism Unpacked2025-07-24 | Meorah Ha-Me'ir unpacks the Shema—six ancient words whispered in joy, desperation, and dying breaths. From Moses’ last speech to the lullabies sung over cribs, the Shema has echoed through Jewish homes and history not as a request or a praise, but as a declaration of oneness—of faith, of identity, of God. And it’s everywhere: in mezuzahs, in tefillin, in our memories.
Meorah explores what it means to believe that God is One—and that everything is one with God. How six words can unite generations, infuse the mundane with meaning, and transform routine into reverence.

Was the universe created in six days — or over the past 13.8 billion years? Jewish thinkers have long wrestled with this question, exploring how ancient texts and modern science might actually be saying the same thing in different ways.
