Join me for a shuddery tale of dark horror and evil things, and the uncanny funeral rites over the corpse of old John Grimlan.
Featuring the investigators of the occult John Conrad and John Kirowan, Robert E. Howard’s ‘Dig Me No Grave’ appeared in the February 1937 issue of ‘Weird Tales’.
To celebrate Hallowe'en and the renewed interest in these characters (thanks to Jim Zub’s ‘Battle of the Black Stone’ mini-series), I offer you a reading of Howard’s story contrasted with Roy Thomas’ comic book adaptation from the 1972 Issue #1 of ‘Journey into Mystery’. Thomas’ 8-page story features the art of Gil Kane and Tom Palmer.

Nemedian Scholar and Conans Compatriot!Stygian Dogs2024-06-03 | Hey you Stygian Dogs!
What follows is a conversation that I’d been greatly anticipating. And with ‘Howard Days’ just around the corner, it was all the more auspicious.
If you’re a regular reader of the monthly ‘Conan the Barbarian' series from Titan Comics and Heroic Signatures - or watch my reviews of the aforementioned - you’ll be well aware of Jeffrey Shanks, whose essays have appeared in each issue of the series, including the two Free Comic Book Day issues. It’s my observation that - especially early in the series relaunch - Shanks’ essays did a lot to fortify Jim Zub’s bold creative choices, adding context and rationale to the story-telling. To me, they’re a must read, full of excellent reference information, while being especially welcoming to those who are newer to Conan and Robert E . Howard.
We start by talking about Jeff’s day job as an archeologist, his journey into Howard scholarship and his relationship with Heroic Signatures - one that will now include Comic Writing credits in 'The Savage Sword of Conan' #4. We go deep into Howard Days…veer into the world of early fanzines, he tells us about the Holy Grail for Howard collectors, his archeological dig at the Howard House - and SO MUCH MORE!
I hope you enjoy this conversation with Conan Compatriot - and Nemedian Scholar - Jeffrey Shanks!

One of the great things about being a kid of the '70s was storybook vinyl - and listening to this invoked a great deal of nostalgia.
Released in 1976, and Inviting you to ‘Hear 4 Exciting New Stories’, the ‘Conan the Barbarian’ LP is listed as #8180 from Power Records, a division of Peter Pan Industries.
Four stories are presented, 2 per side:
Side A - ‘The Jewel of the Ages’ and ‘Shadow of the Stolen City’
Side B - ‘The Thunder Dust’ and ‘The Crawler in the Mists’ (the latter story written by Len Wein)
Front and Rear Cover Art by Neal Adams.
Join me as I share what little details I could find, followed by a full play-through, as I archive this classic.
And then join me for a crazy deep-dive into 'The Crawler in the Mists', coming in a few days!

Yes...Conan too!Stygian Dogs2024-01-23 | Hey you Stygian Dogs!
A selection of 5 books that came my way in 2023! These aren’t necessarily books that were published in 2023 and they may not even be the best books I read during the year…but they are all titles that brought me particular satisfaction, two of them as a matter of anticipation, and the others marked by complete serendipity.
‘Conan: Blood of the Serpent’ by S.M. Stirling - amzn.to/4b9nsU9
When reflecting on the past year, each title readily comes to mind and conjures a vivid memory of time and place (and enjoyment) as I was reading. This is always a bonus…one of those ineffable things that WE bring to an author’s work and adds to the art that they’re giving us - a unique reciprocity and I guess, and part of the reason we love reading.

Anderson’ - Dave Gemmell and Stan Lee.Stygian Dogs2023-12-16 | In this, the final part of a conversation with ‘Conan’s Compatriots’ Steve Saffel and Brian D. Anderson, we hear more about Steve’s freelance work as an editor and the Heroic Legends Series from Titan Books.
Steve and Brian also share stories about writers Mercedes Lackey, Anne McCaffrey, Terry Brooks, Tony Isabella - and a particularly special anecdote about David Gemmel and Stan Lee.
I hope you enjoy Part 6 of a conversation with ‘Conan’s Compatriots’ Steve Saffel and Brian D. Anderson.
--------------------------------------
I’m very excited to share something new with all of you. Brian D. Anderson, author of ‘The Godling Chronicles’, ‘The Sorcerer’s Song’ trilogy (‘The Bard’s Blade’, ‘A Chorus of Fire’ and ‘The Swords Elegy’), the co-writer of the Akiri series (with Steven Savile) and author of the forthcoming ‘Conan: The Child’ from Titan Books (releasing December 26th) reached out to me and said, “Hey, why don’t we have a chat with Steve Saffel. He’s got lots of great stories.”
Umm…sign me up!
Steve Saffel is a writer, legendary editor and mentor with years of knowledge and experience. As you’ll hear, he spearheaded the Robert E. Howard publishing program at Del Ray Books and - prior to moving freelance to mentor independent authors - he was senior acquisitions editor with Titan Books working with Heroic Signatures on the Howard properties, including S.M. Stirling’s ‘The Blood of the Serpent’ and the Heroic Legends short stories currently seeing monthly release from Titan Books.
In a wide-ranging and free-wheeling conversation lasting over two-hours, Brian and Steve talk about all things Conan, Robert E. Howard, writing, editing, and publishing, with so many personal anecdotes and the wisdom that only years of experience can grant.
And, well, when you’re a guy like me - in this situation…you’re best to just sit back and listen. And I’ll extend that opportunity to all of you as I present that complete conversation in a series of 6 shorter episodes.
So join me as we listen in on Part 6 of a conversation with ‘Conan’s Compatriots’ Steve Saffel and Brian D. Anderson.

We look at balancing fan expectations and the opportunities that the Hyborian Age gives us in helping to develop Conan as a character.
Religion and culture are discussed and we see Steve work with Brian’s ideas in real time - and we hear about Steve’s documentarian grandparents and their connection to Joseph Campbell’s ‘The Power of Myth’.
And finally, Steve and Brian speak about Steve (S.M.) Stirling and his Conan novel ‘Blood of the Serpent’. I know you’ll enjoy this episode!
Also, don’t forget to check out Brian D. Anderson’s ‘Conan: The Child’ releasing December 26th from Titan Books.
