Migu
Shroob Castle New Route
updated
This is a 4 second improvement over youtube.com/watch?v=RSzay0NHVBg
There are minor timesaves throughout the run found mostly by Rupa and TASed by Rupa and me, most significantly in Goomboss and Endless Stairs Skip.

After that, Rupa and I saved off 5 seconds, mostly due to an idea by Bobbybob to make 1 star door skip 2 seconds faster both times! Read more here: tasvideos.org/9217S
Rerecords: 439841 (only 5650 more since the previous TAS)

This TAS aims to beat the game without using the Tunneling glitch (which makes it possible to beat the game with 0 stars.) We are working on a run which uses this glitch as well. Here is the current (unoptimized) 0 star run: youtube.com/watch?v=KwLCxGTTk5M
36.93 seconds have been saved over the previous run. The biggest timesave is a faster method of 50 star door skip and endless stairs skip (found by J_Duude, Really_Tall, and Bobbybob). We use a new route for collecting the 3 required stars as well, completely skipping LLL. There are smaller improvements in almost every section.

Additionally, Rupa found a faster strat in BITS which is not included in this video. We'll we'll see if we can find anything else before uploading a newer version
This TAS is 1.07 seconds faster than the last public TAS of this star (youtube.com/watch?v=ATxmVEo7-io) if you ignore the cap animation (which takes 1.44 seconds). This would be 14.69 as Mario. The timesave comes from multiple improvements, but the biggest difference is completely different ending movement (which Really_Tall thought of).
This uses a Luigi warp (which is exclusive to US 1.0 version) to teleport Luigi into the stump in the SW room. If you do this while the babies are in another room, the babies will be sent to a glitched top screen that persists when the adults change rooms. If you switch to the babies in this state, they'll go back to the place they were before. Instead, if you save and reload, the babies will properly be on the top screen.
So the full strat is:
1. Place the babies near the stump for later
2. Set a position in the follow path that will correspond to the stump
3. Without overwriting the follow path, use the cannon to get the adults to the cactus across the spike pit, and ledge clip onto it
4. Take the babies to a different room
5. Use the cactus ledge to warp Luigi into the stump
6. Use ball to warp Luigi back to Mario, then go to the pipe room
7. Save and reload
8. Leaving the top screen triggers the stair-lowering cutscene
When you sell a mask, the game checks the child trade slot and tries to delete whatever is there from your c-buttons. Normally this is the mask, but we RBA blue potion to put bugs in the child trade slot, so the game tries to delete bugs from your c-buttons. We don't have bugs equipped so nothing happens.
In order to get the next mask equipped without manually equipping it, you have to dupe over the mask. When you buy a mask, the game checks the child trade slot and if the item there (bugs in this case) is also on a c-button, that c-button will be replaced with the new mask.
Mario: 15.90 (to star dance)
Yoshi: 20.97 (to fadeout)
+9f waiting on star select for RNG
-8f landing on the cave plank, by skipping the punch to collect the 4th blue
-2f on the plank, by saving 2 Y run before
+8f charging Y run by the last goomba longer
+2f waiting before the second pipe
-102f better coin RNG and movement to cave
-4f between the 3rd and 5th red
-4f between the 6th and 8th red
This was my first TAS of this star combo to see if it was fast enough for 150. We eventually improved this by 8 seconds, which you can watch here: youtu.be/P5QEAyyfw0w?t=766
In the 150 star TAS, after cancelling the piranha star, we set up cancelling The Tip Top of Huge Island star into Wiggler's loading zone (1+2+6), and later do the switch star by itself (7). One other option was to instead get the switch star after cancelling the piranha star (1+7), and do 2+6 from the start of the level. Even though this means replacing a big painting entry with a small painting entry, it's slower overall by 4 seconds. Check out that cool strat to enter the cave with a long jump by Really_Tall though.
This is a route test for an 80 star TAS. Adding on Wiggler to this star combo, like in 150, takes about 50 seconds so it's too slow for 80 star. This isn't completely optimized - over half a second was later saved on the piranhas section.
This was the strat I TASed for this star before Sharkey had the idea to ride the shell all the way to the far side of the star platform, improving the time to 12.82. Check that out here: youtu.be/P5QEAyyfw0w?t=714
I removed more of the pixel vomit by pausing often to clear it. There are still a lot of times it's not that easily removed. Most of these times are during high jumps, when you can't pause. Also while changing action commands, you can pause to clear it, but then a later action command will activate it again pretty soon after. So I usually only paused once while changing commands - there's no glitched graphics between commands 122 and 160, so I paused after getting to 122.
I'm also going to make another video going into detail about these glitches, mostly the teleports.
Thanks to Josh65536 for noticing this spot would work and helping a little with math.
This is the first ever tunnel through non-axis-aligned walls. It's mechanically the same as axis-aligned walls but the math is more complicated.

Cutscene skip (slower) on the left, strat used in the actual TAS on the right. The actual cutscene skip happens at 0:55. Sadly the follow path just takes too long to set up, as a pretty precise position is needed. We actually improved the no-cutscene-skip strat by an additional second over this clip by removing the cutscene where Mario is stuck after leaving the castle. But the cutscene skip was already slower by a second.

At 0:04 I used a glitch to gain control in the cabin loading zone by eating a coin. It doesn't save any time (I actually thought it would lose time to lick, but I found one frame where licking tied just walking in, so I could show this off).
Pause clipping is a new glitch found by youtube.com/user/jraugutt. It only works in some levels, where the camera zooms out when you pause. This zooming out unloads objects that are off the camera, so the brick doesn’t exist for one frame.
Not the greatest quality/production, but it should be good enough. I also explained some of the most important information.

3:06 Collecting 7 attack pieces with WtA that can't be collected with WtW (or remove (WtO)

Luigi warps work by warping to a preset position on the "follow path" which is a list of the 128 most recent positions Mario has walked to. I set up this position in the list in the west room of the desert since it's the only other room whose z-coordinate goes high enough. Then I have to be careful to not overwrite this value while going over to the cactus to do the warp. I decided to hit the statue blocks to show how this would be done in a full-game run.
Once you get in front of the fire, you need to hold up and press A 1 frame later.
First I get "stair glitch" by unstacking on the stairs in toad town (also works with spinning). This means that whenever the bros unstack they are sent backwards a couple steps. This effect persists through loading zones and you even keep it if you go inside bowser. The only ways to lose it are reloading a save or walking normally on stairs.
Next, this can be used to enter the loading zone out of the clinic during a cutscene where the intern tells you to rescue birdley before you leave. This lets you keep the fast forward button in normal gameplay. Anything that normally can be fast-forwarded removes the glitch.
Already more broken than the original :)
