janel sterbentzI filmed this to show what some farmers are doing to their chickens. I am vegan and I find this very disturbing. They told me they do it this way because white meat sells better than dark. That they need to slit the throat and keep them alive so all their blood pumps out of the body.
They sell their meat a the local farmers market and call it free range, organic, locally sourced. Sounds good on paper except you never know how the animals are really treated!
According to PETA, 75% of large scale industrial slaughter operations first electrocute the chickens before their throats are slit, but often the electrocution levels are too low and the birds are still conscious when they are killed. The purpose of electrical stunning of the birds is not to reduce or eliminate pain or to induce unconsciousness, but to immobilize the conscious birds, who would otherwise thrash around. It also facilitates the removal of their feathers by paralyzing the muscles in which their feather follicles are embedded.
The other 25% of industrial farms use controlled-atmosphere killing (CAK) where oxygen from the chickens' environment is removed and slowly replaced with a nonpoisonous gas that puts the birds to sleep while they are still in their transport crates. Exposure to the gas stimulates breathing frequency and may lead to respiratory distress.
Small scale slaughtering normally entails either chopping the head off, breaking the neck, or using cones and slitting their throats as shown in this video. Slitting the throat is preferred by farmers because the heart still beats and pumps blood out of the meat, resulting in the preferred white meat.
The farmer in this video claims the chickens don't feel pain after their throats are slit but really there is no way to know, and it appears they are in pain to me.

Mission "We believe that children growing up in the most difficult circumstances are the most inspired to bring change to their surroundings. We invest in the most vulnerable children in one of the most difficult regions of the world to be a child. We collaborate with children in order to experience and develop a creative process which can provide every child with unlimited opportunities and methods of expression in the most meaningful way possible. We provide children with many musical solutions to life, not necessarily to create a musician out of them but simply to provide them with creative methods to express their own story and feelings without being directly exposed to their audience and to their surroundings."Woodlawn Lake Drone 4k : San Antoniojanel sterbentz2019-05-20 | Filming with Eduardo C GarzaBicycle Street Skills San Antonio 2019janel sterbentz2019-05-14 | This hour-long class covers the laws that apply to cycling, provides concrete examples of scenarios you may encounter, and how best to handle them. Local entrepreneur Tito Bradshaw was hit and killed on E Houston St at N Palmetto while riding his bicycle early Monday morning. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition with a serious head injury, and pronounced brain dead Monday afternoon. Tito was a pillar in the San Antonio cycling community, a bike shop owner, a community activist, a loving father and a faithful friend.
This tragedy could have easily been prevented if the city installed bike lanes on E Houston instead of an unnecessary center turn lane. The official bike route is on Paso Hondo, but cyclists prefer not to take neighborhood streets because it’s a pain to have to stop at every intersection, the street quality is usually worse, there is more chance of being chased and bit by dogs, and the lighting is usually worse.
We need to build a complete, efficient, convenient, interconnected and safe bike network in San Antonio! People who chose transportation that reduces pollution, traffic, crashes and increases well being should be accommodated and rewarded, not risk injury and their lives just to get around.Poem for the Farm Workerjanel sterbentz2019-01-15 | Written and performed by Eduardo C GarzaPoem for the Farm Workerjanel sterbentz2019-01-11 | So, you think the time of harvesting by hand is over? It may be that you think when you buy your fruits and vegetables at the supermarket that they got there by some machine like a train, a truck, or an airplane. Well that’s how it is. But first those fruits and vegetables passed through the hands of God and then through the hands of a farm worker whom you still encounter working hard under the cosmic elements that are the same elements that give us laughter, the sentiment that makes us want to cry, the rain storms, the heatwaves, love and disgrace. But one feels proud because another day of work is over and with that we can go to the store and buy some of the same products that we harvested today. Show a little respect then before you swallow. Think about me. Think about yourself. And think about those working in the fields. Long live the farm worker!Dolores de la Rose Gardenjanel sterbentz2018-12-07 | By Eduardo C GarzaDolores poem - just Eduardojanel sterbentz2018-12-07 | ...4K Aerial Views of San Antonio : November 2018janel sterbentz2018-11-28 | Music: DJ McAliz Actress: Lisa SuarezBo McCarver - Blackland Community Development Corporation, Austin TX gentrificationjanel sterbentz2018-10-22 | http://www.blacklandcdc.orgTrip from San Jose to San Antonio backwardsjanel sterbentz2018-08-07 | Shows the smoke from the 8/18 CA firesFuture San Antonio Forumjanel sterbentz2018-06-16 | facebook.com/events/769695453235390

We are requesting more enforcement of cars parked illegally in bike lanes, as well as ‘no parking signs’ along all bike lanes. The bike lanes need to be swept more regularly. Bike lanes and shoulders with debris/parked cars are dangerous and costly to cyclists. They increase the chances of falling, or getting a flat/blow-out.
