John Philip Sousa - “Riders for the Flag” (1927) - The Presidents Own United States Marine Band United States Marine Band 2024-02-16 | "The President's Own" United States Marine Band presents The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa, a multi-year project to record and publish scores for all of Sousa's Marches. Sousa, known as "The March King," was director of the Marine Band from 1880 to 1892. Recording directed by Col. Jason K. Fettig. http://www.marineband.marines.mil/This march was composed at the request of Colonel Osmun Latrobe, Regimental Commander of the 4th U.S. Cavalry, and was dedicated to Colonel Latrobe, his officers and men. The 4th Cavalry showed its appreciation in a unique manner by presenting Sousa with a handsome parchment, colorfully decorated with the crossed flags of the unit and personally signed by all the officers and enlisted men.The march is unusual in construction in that it is the only Sousa march with a coda.Paul E. John Philip Sousa - “The Atlantic City Pageant” - The Presidents Own United States Marine Band United States Marine Band 2024-02-16 | "The President's Own" United States Marine Band presents The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa, a multi-year project to record and publish scores for all of Sousa's Marches. Sousa, known as "The March King," was director of the Marine Band from 1880 to 1892. Recording directed by Col. Jason K. Fettig. http://www.marineband.marines.mil/In the late 1920s it became increasingly difficult for professional concert bands to find employment at amusement parks or expositions, even for a few days. As the engagements at Philadelphia’s Willow Grove Park were coming to an end, the Sousa Band was happy to extend its regular tour by playing at the Steel Pier in Atlantic City, New Jersey. They began regular seasons there in 1926, and Sousa penned this almost-forgotten march to celebrate their second annual engagement. The march was reportedly written at the suggestion of Atlantic City’s mayor, Anthony M. Ruffu. Sousa probably had the Miss America Pageant in mind; at that time it was known as the Atlantic City Beauty Pageant.Paul E. John Philip Sousa - The Minnesota March (1927) - The Presidents Own United States Marine Band United States Marine Band 2024-02-16 | "The President's Own" United States Marine Band presents The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa, a multi-year project to record and publish scores for all of Sousa's Marches. Sousa, known as "The March King," was director of the Marine Band from 1880 to 1892. Recording directed by Col. Jason K. Fettig. http://www.marineband.marines.mil/It seems incredible that an institution would refuse a composition by a composer of Sousa’s stature, but this happened in the summer of 1927 in Minneapolis. Clarence W. Spears, coach of the University of Minnesota football team, had verbally requested the march for his school in 1926; the following year the march was formally requested by the alumni organization. When the time came for the dedication of the march at the Minnesota State Fair on September 3, 1927, the delegated alumni representative was out of town, and Lotus D. Coffman, president of the university, was asked to accept Sousa’s manuscript of the march on behalf of the university. He refused, however, because he felt the march should be presented at a university function, not at the state fair, and he was wary of commercial implications. Nevertheless, the dedication ceremony was held, and the Sousa manuscript was accepted by the state fair president.Sousa used Indian themes in the march, though sparingly, because he had been impressed by the number of Indian names in Minnesota. He later added field drum and bugle parts upon the request of Colonel Frederick G. Stutz, commanding officer of the 206th National Guard Infantry Regiment of Minnesota. Nowlin makes his public debut as 29th Director of “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band, kicking off the season with a tribute to John Philip Sousa. Sousa was only 25 years old when asked by the Commandant of the Marine Corps to serve as the band’s 17th Director. In 12 years, Sousa simultaneously transitioned "The President's Own" from a local military band into a world-renowned musical organization and transformed himself into a national celebrity known as "The March King." Sousa’s musical interests were often reflected in his programmatic style, as is represented in this performance. At the helm, he brought orchestral music to the masses through wind band transcriptions, highlighted the virtuosic skill of soloists, and unabashedly inserted his own compositions into the mix, a programming structure that is still emulated by the Marine Band today. U.S. Marine Band - Change of Command United States Marine Band 2023-12-21 | On Dec. 20, 2023, Lt. Col. Ryan J. Nowlin was officially designated director of the Marine Band at a change of command ceremony held at The Midwest Music Clinic in Chicago. The ceremony, overseen by Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps Gen. Christopher J. Mahoney, took place midway through a Marine Band concert in which Col. Jason K. Fettig conducted the first half and Lt. Col. Nowlin conducted the second. As a symbol of the transfer of leadership, the John Philip Sousa baton was passed from outgoing to incoming director.

Sousa responded by composing this, one of his most vigorous marches, and dedicating it to Mayor Smith and the people of Detroit. Connor Mikula speaks with Marine Band Director Colonel Jason K. Fettig about The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa, the first comprehensive collection of Sousa's marches produced by "The President's Own" since the 1970s. The seven volumes span Sousa's entire march-writing career, from 1873-1932, and offer free resources for 129 marches. Modern recordings, historical information (courtesy of Paul E. Bierley, author of The Works of John Philip Sousa), as well as full-band scores and sheet music for marches that are in the public domain, are all available for public use as a result of this multi-year project. The volumes are available for free download exclusively on the Marine Band website.
