Windows Whistler Build 2458 Billy OReilly 2024-08-17 | This is Windows XP build 2458 (2458.main.010310-1552) in VMware Workstation Pro. This is a Beta 2 build which was compiled on 2001-03-10 and expires on 2001-09-06 and was released to testers on 14 March 2001.The requester of this build mentioned that they had trouble installing this build which was the reason for them requesting it. BetaWiki has made this note for the build: "On some copies of this build, the system may either freeze during boot or bugcheck due to a bug with the network interface controller driver. It is recommended to replace NDIS.SYS with NULL.SYS or a copy of the problematic driver from build 2457 or 2459." It appears that some .ISOs are broken however mine is fine so I had zero issues installing it.Oh and this is the first build I used VMware Workstation Pro 17 on and I kind of regret it as I found that it is broken. Windows Longhorn Build 4011 Billy OReilly 2024-08-15 | This is Windows Longhorn Build 4011 (4011.main.030305-2045) in VMware Workstation Pro (mostly). This is a Milestone 4 which was compiled on 2003-03-05 and expires on 2004-03-01 and was made available on 21 July 2006. I had DCE working in this build, but only for a little while because it makes the OS more unstable. This build was quite a pain to install because I found out after hours of attempts that this build for whatever reason cannot be clean installed in VMware (thanks to NTLDR errors after finishing the second portion of setup). This can most likely be upgraded in VMware and I'm sure there's easier ways of getting the OS to work, but my goal was to do a clean install and get DCE working.How I got this to run:I used VirtualBox 7.0.20 to get past the first portion of setup and VMware Workstation Pro 6.5 for the rest. You can use newer versions of VMware of course, but make sure backwards compatibility is set to version 6.5-7.0, but if you use newer versions than VMware than 6.5, DCE will not work.Use Longhorn packet (which can be found off BetaArchive) and copy the .ISO's files there and save it.I first of all created the VMware VM, then created a VirtualBox VM using Server 2003 guest settings and attached the .vmdk file to that to run setup (don't worry about setting the BIOS date yet if you plan on doing exactly what I did). According to BetaWiki, approximately four hours after the compilation of build 4093, the development of Longhorn was reset and they started fresh by using a work-in-progress version of the Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1. This is the official Beta 1 build which was compiled on 2005-07-20 and expires on 2006-09-30. This build was officially released on 27 July 2005 and, as of the uploading of this video, was the earliest known build to use the final name. Aero is available in this build but is rather quite buggy so I left it off throughout the video, but I do show how to enable it. Audio drivers are also not installed in this video due to issues with explorer when audio drivers are installed in VMware (BetaWiki mentions it occurring on "modern versions of VMware" but I tested it as far back as the actual version of VMware Workstation 6.5 and it still had the same issue. This is a Milestone 5 build which was compiled on 1993-11-23 and found on July 2014 and then made available online on 2 August 2014. This build is about the same as build 73g except for 73f is an internal build and features an internal version of WinBug meanwhile 73g was released to external testers and featured a different version of WinBug. Windows Longhorn Build 3706 Billy OReilly 2024-06-29 | This is Windows Codename Longhorn 3706 (3706.Lab06_N.021029-1731) in VMware Workstation. This is a Milestone 3 build which was compiled on 2002-10-29 and expires on 2003-10-24. This build was made public on 23 May 2006. This build has DCE available, but you need VMware Workstation 6.5 as backwards compatibility is not enough. So since I could not run Workstation 6.5 on my Windows 11 host, I did nested virtualization instead. So basically I made a Windows 7 Pro x64 VM and installed VMware Workstation 6.5 just for this video (I could have used the server indeed, but this video is pretty much a test to see if I can abandon the Windows Server 2008 R2 server I am renting and switch to nested virtualization instead which would essentially be free). If you try nested virtualization, please note that you need a good CPU for it to work well (I have a Core i9-12900K so it's no problem). Windows 8 Build 8045 Billy OReilly 2024-06-28 | This is Windows 8 build 8045 (8045.0.fbl_grfx_dev1.110713-1730) in VMware Workstation Pro. This is a Milestone 3/Developer Review build which was compiled on 2011-07-13 and expires on 2012-03-22 and was made available on 26 January 2020. This build has some interesting features such as a new crash screen, new Aero theme (WITH REDLOCK) and recovery options and more. The immersive control panel is interesting, however it appears very buggy. When I tested the build out on another VM before recording, I could not get it to load and it would be stuck on a light blue screen and I tried changing settings in VMware and it wouldn't work.
