Using an iPad, Apple Pencil and Procreate makes sketching on the spot easy as I carry my kit with me everywhere. During a staycation at the Island Shangri-La Hong Kong, I found a variety of subjects to draw on location, most of which were done without even leaving the room! Yes, the hotel has a great gym and pool, but we never even peeked ;p
All artwork in this video were done on location, through direct observation, except for the quick portrait of Michelin-star Chef Uwe Opochensky (that was part memory, part reference and part imagination).
My daily drivers are the 2018 and 2021 12.9” iPad Pro, Apple Pencil and Procreate.

Several weeks ago, before most of the world went into lockdown, I headed out with a few urban sketchers friends to the HK countryside, to explore & draw the quaint little fishing village of Sam Mun Tsai (三門仔). In addition to showing a slice of life in the village, I also explain my processes for the 3 sketches I did, as well as how I got around problems while drawing and painting the scene on location.

It used to house a complete law enforcement complex, with everything from living quarters to prisons and a court, and has been transformed into the latest arts and culture hub in the city.
One of our USkHK administrators was a lead engineer on the site for the last 6 years, and gave us a special tour, as well as early access so we could sketch unhindered, and the opportunity drew a record crowd!
I only did a 15min sketch this time. Busy chatting with new and old friends, as well as shooting video. I’ve been inspired by all the YT videos I’ve been watching, and am teaching myself to edit better. If you like the video, please subscribe. I’ve been shooting a lot of content and have plenty of dedicated iPad info coming up in the coming weeks!
