all of those starclan animations in the background are part of a HUGE collab :) I can't wait to see the final thing, so proud of everybody on the part 68 team
This part has actually been complete for a couple months now, I've just been so busy that I haven't been able to post much lately x')
Big thanks to Ben for helping me with the backgrounds! @BenScribbles

This one was a BEAST. I would have done a little more compositing work with the shadows and fixing minor mistakes etc, but my laptop would've melted x]
Support my collab partners!! They did such a great job:
@PixylMawthz : shocked ashfur + first pass of cleanup for shot 1, 2, and ash/bramble in 4
@bregottski : polishing & painting my background sketches
sorry there's no process breakdown in this one, but here are my WIPs if you're interested in seeing them:

for DragonWolfRooke's awesome AU MAP, next up forever: youtube.com/watch?v=9WbymvJUHi8&t=2s
anyway, I edited together a quick video showing the main things I did for Bramblefur: Ashes! I was working on those roughs for a month and a half I think. I loved animating that creepy ass creature
thanks so much to everyone who lent a hand!! I really loved the collaborative pipeline style to this project 💚💚
watch the finished project here: youtube.com/watch?v=kBn0dCAI0eU
song used: youtu.be/78wDn_A20-w
characters are ashfur (possessing brambleclaw) and squirrelflight from cheeteh z's warrior cats AU!
Something I made incredibly quickly for class! I have to make two more films this semester so they might pop up here later, keep your eyes peeled for that.
Mint (Mintnose) is Lou @Sparroet 's character
Hornet (Hornetwhisker) is mine :) I love them both sm
Can anyone decode this? ;D key can be found in the video -- "GldYllx"
This was so fun!!! though I think I've had this part for so long that you can see several different Nettle Art Styles. Whoever correctly comments the number of cats I drew for this gets a pat on the back in the replies. Fun fact, that date in the corner is the day the song released :]
the owa owa intensifies

Script:
Hawkstorm looks down at Tadpole in confusion at first and then his expression turns cold. Hawkstorm yells “We are the saviors!” at Firestar.
Tadpole tries to hold down Hawkstorm’s paw but Hawkstorm dissipates Tadpole’s ghost as he raises his paw to attack Firestar. But then Brambleclaw tackles Hawkstorm down.
Note: Make sure the characters have wind blowing through their fur!
Music: God's Whisper by Raury
Characters: Hawkstorm (alternate universe Hawkfrost), Brambleclaw, Firestar, Tadpole
Programs Used: Blender (previs), Toon Boom (Animation), After Effects (3D background, compositing, shading) Clip Studio Paint (drawing the background layers, design study)
Project Specs: 1080x1920, 30fps, animated on threes with some twos/fours/fives sprinkled in
Designs: Cheeteh Z, MANCHKIN! (background concept art)
Host: Cheeteh Z
Time taken: about a month. I'm not gonna be this extra with a time-crunch MAP part again hahah, especially with uni. Was great fun though :]
Process:
1) PREVIS: For parts with dramatic movement or rotation, I always try to do some concept drawings & floor plans
→ I usually start with a design study of the character (you can find a drawing of Hawkstorm in my community posts) to understand the shapes of the body, head and markings. You might notice Brambleclaw is kind of inconsistent... this is because I didn't do a design study for him!
→ Blender is a great way to quickly nail down the floor plan of a scene. You can download free 3D models from places like turbosquid and sketchfab, just for a quick placeholder. I would play around with Blender more if I knew how, it can do pretty much everything!
2) BACKGROUNDS: I feel like I always enjoy the process more when I start my background first - it helps me place the anim in 3D space correctly. That being said, I didn't finalise the camera movements before I began animating, which is why you can see a lot of floatiness in the final product. This part taught me that I need to finish the background completely before moving onto the second pass!! Anyway here's my background process:
→ Thumbnails/colour keys: Get a rough idea of the composition & colour you want, make sure it'll work well with the animation
→ Painting: In Clip Studio Paint I draw each background element onto a separate layer. This means I can export them as transparent PNGs, which can be put into parallax. At 00:36 you can see how the files on the top right form a stage on the bottom left.
→ In After Effects I space out my background layers along the Z axis. Then when I use the 3D camera tool, it gives the illusion of depth (v cool)
3) ANIMATION
→ 1st pass: In Toon Boom, I roughly block out the characters using the 3D background as reference. I keep it very rough at this stage so it's easy to make fixes.
→ 2nd pass: Here I add more structure to my keyframes. I break down the character into simple shapes so it's easy to keep consistent. I usually inbetween the body before adding physics-y things.
→ Physics-y things: the ears/fur/tail are being battered by the wind so I did a lot of it straight ahead on a separate layer. Also I feel like it's easier to make a satisfying secondary motion if the centre of weight is already done!
→ Cleanup (lineart + colouring): My least favourite part. In my opinion vector programs are much better for cleanup, I work so much faster after switching from bitmap.
4) COMPOSITING
→ PNG sequences: I export different layers of animation as PNG sequences and then import them into After Effects. The separation of layers means I can adjust/shade each character individually. If I need to make the lineart/eyes glow or something, I'll export those separately as well.
→ Shading: Since I didn't have time to add manual shading, I added them through layer styles! They're easy to use. You can time the angle of them so they look like the light source is changing direction :] Also I added some fractal noise on top of Tadpole to give him some texture.
→ Animation: made the grass wiggle with turbulent displace.
→ Misc: added some masks (tadpole's paw, shadow on firestar)
→ Camera: Made some tweaks + zooms. VERY LAGGY
→ Editing: Added some motion blur
Total AE crash count: 12. My laptop didn't like the grass. Save every 2 minutes in Adobe programs :'D
And that's it! Hope that answers some questions
