It came into our workshop after it was apparently repaired by another repair shop... and it was a disaster! The leg was broken. Some of the furniture joints were glued together with polyurethane (a big no no). There was a screw in the leg to hold it in place. A wedge was missing that holds the chair back in place. There was a splinter of wood missing on the chair back. In a previous repair, a chair back spindle was replaced but the woodturning didn't match the rest of the spindles.As with all our Fixing Furniture videos, we show you how to repair and restore this piece of furniture to get it back into working order. Our customer spent years searching to find 8 matching chairs. They finally had their collection of chairs, but the leg on this one chair broke. Their plan is to paint the 8 chairs black so they look consistent around a large table. We don't need to finish this char but there's a lot of work to do. Rattan Cane Sofa Restoration in Historic Perth, Ontario - a Fixing Furniture Restoration Project Fixing Furniture 2025-06-05 | This beautiful rattan cane back sofa needed some restoration work. The sheet cane had become brittle and was broken. This is from the Coutts Coffee shop in historic downtown Perth, Ontario, where customers love to relax on the sofa.The first step in any rattan cane project it to understand if it's hand-woven cane or pre-woven sheet cane. Hand-woven cane is time consuming to restore compared to pre-woven sheet cane, which is what is on this sofa. I measured the material needed and placed my order for delivery.I start by removing the old reed spline, which is the boarder around the cane. I use a cane chisel (see link below) to efficiently remove the spline, cane, and glue residue from the slot in the sofa back. I then sand down any rough edges that break the new sheet cane. After touching up bare areas with stain and washing the frame, it's time to trim the sheet cane to size. I cut it about one inch wider around the sofa back.The rattan sheet cane and the reed spline need to soak in water to make them more flexible. I soaked these for one hour. I start by removing the sheet cane from the water and rolling it out on the sofa back frame, ensuring the shiny side is facing the front of the sofa. I line up the cane on the bottom edge of the back, which is a long, straight line. This is where the cane webbing pattern will be most visible and noticeable if it's not straight. I start the installation by using my Cane Webbing Installation Tool (see link below) to press the cane in the groove on the ends of the sofa back. Once pressed in, I hold them in place temporarily with a piece of reed spline. After checking alignment again, I press the cane webbing into the groove along the bottom of the back. I then press the cane in at the top, which requires cutting some of the cane away to relieve the stress of the material to allow it to flex.With the sheet cane pressed in place all around, I then cut off the excess cane around the outside edge. I then apply white glue in the groove and tap in the reed spline. This holds the sheet cane in place as it tries and becomes tight. Citing the reed spline is easy at the bottom corners where it isn't visible, but more challenging where it needs to be metered and cut to fit around tights curves. After the reed spline is in place, I wipe up the excess glue and wait for the cane to dry for 24 hours.The sofa looks great and we set it back up in Coutts Coffee, where we filmed some of the building to appreciate the architecture and decor. Restore an MCM Coffee Table from Denmark - a Fixing Furniture Restoration Project Fixing Furniture 2025-03-29 | This Mid-Centry Modern (MCM) coffee table has been well used and unfortunately, poorly repaired. I show how to repair the table and remove the major marks on the Teak table top. It's a challenge to restore damaged table tops with oil finishes as the wood is so susceptible to marks from moisture and alcohol.This coffee table was made in Denmark by Toften, which is burned into the bottom of the table top. The legs are coming apart at one end and on the other end, they were repaired with glue and screws though the front of the legs. The top has black rings and white rings in the oil finish from damage over the years, and in some spots the wood is bare.I start by taking off the legs and inspecting the damage. I then take advantage of the abnormally warm weather of the day and move the table top outside to strip off the old finish and start repairing the marks. I use a paint stripper without methylene chloride, a hazardous chemical. I apply it liberally and keep it wet over the course of 30 minutes. I then scrape if off with a putty knife and wash it down to neutralize the stripper.While the stripper took off the old finish and the white ring, there's a very dark mark on the table. The next step is to use wood bleach to reduce the dark mark. I use a strong solution of oxalic acid and let it try overnight. The next morning I wash the table top off with water to remove the crystals from the oxalic acid, which are dangerous if you sand them.Once the table has dried, I applied a custom-mixed acrylic stain to the table top and let it dry thoroughly. I then applied Danish oil, which is a mix of oil and varnish. This provides more protection than other types of oil finishes. Once dried, I applied a dark paste wax to help protect the table from scratches and moisture. It's not the most durable finish, but it's a finish that's appropriate for MCM Teak furniture.Repairing the legs required disabling all the parts, removing the old adhesive, and fitting some custom sized dowels in the holes that were very worn. I filled the screw holes from the previous repair with burn-in wood filler and I touched up the color on the filler from the previous repair. Once I glued up all the parts with hide glue, I was able to reassemble the table.This MCM coffee table is now ready to go back to the customer. They asked for a touch up of the finish on the top, but it needed more than that to disguise most of the damage from years of use. How to Repair Antique Wooden Drawers with Locks - a Fixing Furniture Restoration Fixing Furniture 2025-01-18 | Wooden drawers wear over time from the wood parts rubbing together. This is the most worn out set of drawers we've ever had in our workshop. The drawer sides and runners are made from pine, which is a softwood, which is less durable than hardwood.These drawers are also missing the locks that were once in them. Scott shows how to install reproduction half-mortise locks as well as how to source the right lock.Scott flattens the bottom of the drawer sides with several different planes. He then glues on wood strips to replace the wood that has worn away. Once the glue has dried, he trims the new wood on the table saw and refines the fit using planes so they slide into the desk drawer openings. Vintage Sled Restoration for Holiday Decor by Fixing Furniture Fixing Furniture 2024-11-29 | The Flexible Flyer sled was an innovation of the late 19th century that provided steering on the sled. This Speedliner sled was likely made in the 1960's and it's not a valuable antique. It will make an awesome holiday decor item for our front porch though. The Speedliner sleds were manufactured in Canada by Werlich in Preston, Ontario. The brand name is Playthings, which is part of a decal on the sled.Restoring this sled was a challenge due to the deteriorated finish and decals. Rubber for Wheels - How to Repair Wheels When Restoring Furniture by Fixing Furniture Fixing Furniture 2024-08-02 | Repairing old rubber on wheels for furniture isn't challenging if you know the right techniques and materials to use. In this video, Scott shows how to measure, cut, glue, and install new rubber on furniture wheels. If this isn't a project you want to take on, share this video with your local repair shop so they will know how to do it for you.The first step is to remove the old rubber tire. On this wheel, the natural rubber is held together with a wire. By using side cutters to cut the wire, the old rubber falls away from the wheel.The next step is to measure the diameter of the replacement rubber you need. If you can't measure the old rubber, use different size dowels to place in the groove of the wheel to see what size fits best. For example, a large tea wagon wheel is typically 1/2 inch rubber where the small wheel is typically 3/8 inch rubber. If you don't have dowels available, a AAA battery is approximately 3/8 inches wide and a AA battery is a little larger than 1/2 inches wide.Now you know the size of the rubber, the next step is to measure the length of material you need. Use a string to wrap around the wheel, inside the groove and mark where the end meets the string. Lay the string down next to a tape measure and measure the length. It's best to add an inch for a margin of error. With the diameter and the length, you can now order synthetic rubber for your project. This is difficult material to find, so we've sourced it to make it available for furniture restoration. You can order it here on our website woodenitbenice.ca/collections/all/rubberOnce you have your material, you can lay it in the groove of the wheel an overlap the end. Mark the length you need. For large wheels, subtract 1/4 of an Inch as the synthetic rubber will stretch. For small wheels, subtract 1/16 of an inch. If the rubber is loose after the installation, it can be cut off, trimmed shorter, and reinstalled.Only cut the rubber with a brand new utility knife blade. This will prevent the rubber from being pressed down, which could result in an uneven cut. Holding the knife square to the rubber and plumb (straight up and down), cut the rubber with a slicing action. Trim the other end if it's not cut square.To glue the ends of the rubber together, use thin CA glue (aka super glue or krazy glue). Hold one cut end horizontal and apply the CA glue. Align the other end on top of the glued joint and hold for 30 seconds. Allow the glue to cure for as long as possible before installing the rubber - 30 minutes would be fine. NOTE: on small castor wheels, the rubber needs to be glued on while the loop is within the metal wheel supports as shown in the video.Clean off any glue with 0000 steel wool, which is super fine steel wool. This will make the area dull like the rest of the rubber.The last step is to stretch on the rubber. Hold the rubber on the wheel where the glue joint is and work the rubber around the rim until fully seated in the groove. That's it! How to Restore Old Stools, Shorten Them, and Remove Paint Drips - a Fixing Furniture Restoration Fixing Furniture 2024-07-13 | These stools needed a lot of work to restore them. With paint drips and splatters, loose joints, some bad replacement parts, mismatched finish, and two different heights, it took finishing, woodworking, and furniture restoration skills to get these looking similar.In a previous repair, the taller stool had two stretchers replaced with dowels that didn't match the design of the stool. I took the stool apart to replace the stretchers but someone added nails to hold the stretchers in place. Finishing nails are hard to remove and I find a mini cats paw (see link below) is the most effective way to pull out finishing nails. I've tried many methods over the years and there's no way to remove a finishing nail without damaging the wood. Fortunately, these nails were on the inside of the stool so the damage was easy to patch and hide.Making the new replacement stretchers was more difficult than I anticipated. The tenons were round and on an angle from the stretcher... a woodworking challenge to reproduce. The key was accurate joinery layout and the use of a plug/tenon cutter.Once the stool was glued back together again, it was time to shorten it to match the other stool. I used a compound miter saw and a stop block to make quick work of it.Matching wood stain can be challenging and this project showed that. Antique Furniture Restoration on a Broken Platform Spring Rocking Chair by Fixing Furniture Fixing Furniture 2024-06-01 | Learning antique furniture restorations skills is about gaining knowledge and experience. Watch Scott as he repairs this broken platform spring rocking chair. It's in bad shape and needs a lot of repair to get it back in working order. From turning a new part on the lathe to matching wood stain, you'll see how it's done in our workshop.The convolute spring for rocking chair was invented by A.W. Schram and Arthur White. They have a patent dated January 5, 1897 for the device. It's an interesting idea for a platform rocker however there don't seem to be many around anymore.This rocking chair has a number of problems with it, including previous repairs that were done wrong. The key structure to the chair is the back posts, and one is broken off. Someone attempted to repair it with a dowel, but that failed. The chair has been refinished, but the person who refinished it put finish over the area where the arm posts should be glued to the chair. As a result, the posts pivot, which no longer provide support for the back posts, making them weaker. There is also some loose veneer, improperly fitting joints, and some missing screws. Indiana is known as the "Hoosier State". How to Refinish a Farmhouse Table and Apply a Polyurethane Finish, a Fixing Furniture Restoration Fixing Furniture 2024-01-27 | Refinishing a table like a farmhouse table could seem intimidating. Scott walks through this project step by step, sharing over 20 tips to help you be successful with this type of project.This farmhouse table has a Pine top and the lacquer finish is degrading. It's lifted off in spots and softened in others. Moisture and heat shows how bad the condition of the finish is. Scott starts off by showing different tools and techniques for stripping off an old finish. From using sanders, scrapers, and strippers, you can learn what approach you want to use in your project.Once the finish is removed, Scott sands it down to reveal any flaws. This table has dents it in from a lot of use. Scott shows how to easily remove the dents before the final sanding with 220 grit sandpaper.Pine is a difficult wood to stain unless you know the right technique. Pre-finishing and wood conditioner are both demonstrated to get the best result when staining Pine. The stain is applied, then wiped off for a consistent look to the table top.Polyurethane is a very durable finish, and Scott chose an oil-based polyurethane for this project. Three coats are applied with a quality brush. Between applying each coat, the surface is smoothed. It was build in 1859 by Nelson Gilbert Reynolds, who was the Sheriff of Ontario County. Mr. Reynolds was named after Lord Nelson, so when Mr. Reynolds named the castle, he named it after Lord Nelson's victory at the Battle of Trafalgar.In 1874, Mr. Reynolds sold Trafalgar Castle, which became the Ontario Ladies College and is now known as Trafalgar Castle School. This is a private school for young women. The building has been well maintained by the school as you can see in the video.Trafalgar Castle was the largest private residence in North America when it was built. It was the largest private residence in Canada before Casa Loma was built in Toronto in 1914. There have been a number of improvements to the castle over the years. It was the first building in Whitby to have electricity. An indoor pool was build in 1910, which is thought to be one of the oldest in Canada.Additions were also added to the castle over the years. The architecture of the additions mimic the original building in a tasteful way so that it appears as one cohesive building. A wing was added for student dormitories. How to Repair & Age Wood: A Rustic Wooden Chest Repair by Fixing Furniture Fixing Furniture 2023-03-25 | It's a broken rustic wooden chest. Watch how to repair it and also how to age bare wood to make it look like the rest of the chest. You'll learn valuable furniture restoration tips as Scott walks through the detailed steps of how to successfully repair the chest.Repairing a broken piece of furniture like this starts with inspecting the damaged wood and deciding what to do with it. For this chest, there are some loose parts and some poorly-repaired parts that need to be separated and reglued. After that, it's planning what wood to cut out to install wood patches.Part of the problem with this chest is the hinges have been replaced multiple times. There's evidence of 2 previous hinges before this one came off. I replace the hinges with hinges designed for a chest. I also install a lid stay to keep the lid from falling back and straining the hinges.I disassemble the lid and plane the two board so they can be glued back together again. I use a jointer plane for this which is a hand-powered alternative to a jointer machine. Once the lid is glued up and back in one piece, I modify the chest to accommodate the smaller lid.With some new wood and some modified wood, those parts look too new. I share my techniques for aging wood so that the modifications are not obvious to the untrained eye. It is a very repairable finish, so this project doesn't need the finish stripped off - it can be restored by using a technique called amalgamation. Refinishing a Vintage Table with French Polish - a Fixing Furniture Restoration Project Fixing Furniture 2022-12-17 | This vintage wood table had a damaged finish on the top and on the shelf. There was no way to save the finish, so I used furniture stripper to remove the old finish. I share some refinishing techniques and collaborate with Trena on the @johnsfurniturerepair YouTube channel to test out a new furniture stripper.Once the finish was removed from the table, the top still looked really bad. I sanded it down past the stain to the bare wood before building up the color with dye stains. I chose to use a French Polish finish on this table. I've been doing a lot of research on French Polish and this was my first time using it on a project. Clamp Tool Review - Trigger Clamps, Spreader Clamps for Woodworking and Furniture Restoration Fixing Furniture 2022-11-18 | Do cheap wood clamps work as well as brand-name clamps? Which clamp is the best buy? Which is the easiest to use? Which is the strongest? I review 6 clamps by testing them in my business and gets a second opinion from another furniture repair business owner, Trena Reynolds from @johnsfurniturerepair YouTube channel.I bought the two cheapest trigger clamps I could buy on Amazon. The major manufactures sent me a sample of their wood clamps; DeWalt, Irwin Quick-Grip, Bessey, and Jorgensen. I used the clamps and put them through tests to see how they perform. In the end I chose one clamp as the best value and one clamp as the best overall as my favourite.The first test was the clamping pressure test. These tools are important because PVA glue (e.g., yellow glue or carpenter's glue) and hide glue won't work on wood without clamping pressure. I built a wood frame that holds a scale to measure the clamping force of each of the clamps.The second test was to understand how well the pads work. Do they grip or slip off when used on uneven surfaces? I used a wooden chair where the legs were splayed, which is a common situation when I re-glue old chairs.The third part of this tool review was subjective. To get some help to evaluate how easy it is to convert these clamps to spreader clamps, I brought the clamps to Trena's workshop, where she helped me look at each one. How to Replace Rubber Tires on Tea Cart Wheels | Furniture Restoration by Fixing Furniture Fixing Furniture 2022-06-25 | Restoring tea cart wheels and rubber tires might seem like a challenging project, but I show you step-by-step how to do it. Furniture restoration requires specific knowledge and that's why I share these videos - to give you the knowledge to be successful in your projects.You can purchase the rubber here woodenitbenice.ca/collections/all/rubberThe first step to resorting the old tea cart wheels is to disassemble the tea cart. This tea cart needed to be reglued, but this step also makes it easier to work on the individual parts. Once everything is apart, I start working on the wooden wheel.The old rubber needs to be removed. On these tires, there's a wire running through the middle. I cut back some of the brittle tire to expose an area to cut the wire with side cutters. With the tire off, I can inspect the wooden wheel closely to understand if any repairs are needed.On the first wheel, there are a few loose joints. I begin by labelling the parts using masking tape so I'm confident how each piece goes back together again. Then I take a spreader clamp and begin separating the parts. There is a loose spline joint and some spoke that need reglueing.I reglue the parts back together with hide glue (only use hide glue when repairing joints in antiques as it can be unglued in the future if something gets damaged). I spread glue on the mortises and tenons to ensure there's enough glue and I reassemble the wheel.Clamping a wheel is tricky so I use a rubber band around the wheel and tie it tight enough to provide even tension around the wheel. There was one part that wasn't aligning so I added a clamp to push it back in place. I set this aside for the glue to dry and worked on the other wheel.Next is the front caster wheels. The rubber is rock hard and it fell apart. Replacing the rubber is a little tricky on this type of wheel. I use 3/8" rubber and wrap it around the wheel to mark the length I need. Then I cut it off and wrap it around the wheel to see how it fits. I prefer to cut the ends on a slight angle to make the joints tighter. Once I'm happy with the fit, I apply CA glue to the end and join the two ends together. Make sure you wear gloves as CA glue can stick you skin together. I then use 0000 steel wool to remove any excess CA glue.With the caster wheels done, I then move on to installing the new rubber on the large wooden wheels. This process is easier on these wheels. I measure the length, cut the rubber straight and test fit it on the wheel. Once I'm happy with the length, I then glue the two ends together. On a large wheel like this, the rubber can be glued together while not on the wheel as it can be stretched on afterwards. I set this aside and turn my attention to touching up the stain on the wheels.There are little marks on the stain so I touch them up with a stain marker. It's a simple process of running the stain marker over the defect and then wiping it with a cloth. The tricky part is finding the right color of stain to use... that's something that's easier with practice. Broken Chair Back Repair with a Lathe, Shave Horse & Furniture Restoration Skills - Fixing Furniture Fixing Furniture 2022-06-04 | Repairing this broken chair back is a challenge. I have a set of 4 chairs, so I can learn from the other chairs how they're assembled. It turns out that this chair was repaired before. There are scarf joints attaching the broken pieces together. They weren't done well, so some of them have broken. There are also dowels drilled into the chair back posts but unfortunately they weakened the chair back as you'll see in the video.To repair this chair back, the two posts need to be replaced. They have a mortise (a slot) in them so there's more work to these than just turning them on the lathe. I start by marking and drilling out most of the material for the mortice. Then I chisel out the edges to get mortises the right width. Next, I make a temporary tenon to glue into the mortise when I turn these on the lathe to prevent any tear out that would damage the edge of the mortise.Using the lathe, I turn the new chair back posts and duplicate the design to match the rest of the chairs. This is a dusty job but I find it rewarding to shape a square block of wood into a furniture part. After sanding, I apply a coat of black tempura paint to the whole piece, let it dry, then sand it off. This is a staining step called "setting the grain". It gets the open grain in the Red Oak very dark and will help the new parts match the old parts once the stain is applied.The top of the chair back posts need to be finished so I used my benchtop shave horse to hold down the work while us used a spokeshave, file, and sandpaper to do the final shaping. This is a critical feature of the chair that needs to match the other chairs in the set. I then apply the black paint and set the grain to match the rest of the chair back post.The next step is to apply the stain. I'm using a water-based stain that works well to duplicate old oak. When applied over the set grain, it looks just like the original parts. I finish off the parts with polyurethane, which matches the original chair.To assemble the chair back, I cut slots in the tenons at the bottom of the chair back posts. These accept a wedge to hold the chair back posts in place so they don't pull out of the chair seat. I glue up the chair back using PVA glue on the scarf joint on the slat that broke and with hide glue on the rest of the parts. Based on how these 25 year old chairs had 5 broken slats, they may break in the future, so using hide glue will allow the next repair person to disassemble the chair to replace the broken parts.With the chair all back together, it's time to return it to the customer. Sometimes people ask if all this work is worth it... that is an answer only the customer can answer. These are quality chairs the customer has owned for decades and they decided to repair them instead of replace them with something that may be less quality. I offer the skills, the customer decides if they want to make use of them.
