No one knows when it was built or why. Many Mon people were building temples in this area in the 7th-11th century. I think it is one of theirs. The Burmese king insisted on capturing the land, but the Khmer, the Mon, and the kingdom of Sukhothai joined together to foil the attacker. The Mon people were the first to settle in the area - there are Mon settlements/villages still inhabited by Mon people in many areas. The two Mon warriors were instructed by the Burmese King to assassinate Prince Naresuan. After a meeting, they joined the Ayutthaya army and foiled the attacking Burmese.This temple was built in honor of the two victorious Mon. Many Mon temples were built in this area before it was the kingdom. Records show construction in the 1400's, but Mon Buddhist had built temples in the area during the Dvaravati era (6th-10th centuries) Many kings 'restored' the ancient temples according to ancient recordings. The ring of swans is impressive as are the ancient naga carvings. The stone tablet was designed by King Naresuan, final King of Ayutthaya. King Borom Trailokanat of Ayutthaya and 2,000 of his followers were ordained as monks at this temple in 1416. The royal elephant army resided here during wars with neighboring Myanmar (Burma).
