updated
๐ If you're struggling with your toddler's big emotions and would like to learn strategies for managing challenging toddler behaviour, our course Happy Place is here to help. Check it out here: brightestbeginning.com/happy-place-course//?lead_source=youtube_198
In this video you'll learn about 3 common phrases that often work in the moment with toddlers, but don't always deliver the message we intend them to. While they might seem helpful, you can swap them for some alternatives that are shown to be much more effective in terms of providing support and encouragement, building your child's confidence, and fostering emotional well-being.
In this video you'll learn what these phrases are, and the alternatives you can use instead.
Please don't feel guilty or bad in any way if you do use these phrases. That's not the intent of this video at all. Using them here or there isn't going to harm your toddler's emotional development. This is simply about highlighting some alternatives that help deliver on the intent in a more effective way.
As always, I hope you find this helpful!

At some point, your toddler is going to start whining when they want things. It's inevitable. But how you respond has a very real impact on how often they whine for things, and how severe it gets.
Toddlers are learning to communicate effectively. They are constantly experimenting to see what works and what doesn't. When something gets them a positive result, they do it more. When a behaviour doesn't deliver a positive result, they do it less.
This is why it's important to avoid the mistake you'll learn about in this video when your toddler starts to whine and complain. By avoiding this mistake, you'll help reduce the frequency and severity of their complaining. You'll also learn what you can do instead when your child does complain, to help direct them to more positive behaviours instead.
As always, I hope this helps!

I accidentally caused our first daughter to go from being a great sleeper throughout the night, to waking frequently. It all came down to one tiny mistake, that in hindsight, I could have easily avoided.
In this video I'll walk you through what that mistake was, and how my belief that she was teething (she wasn't!) led to me making it. You'll also learn 2 other common things that can cause increased night wakes and worse sleep for your little one.
If you're struggling with baby sleep, or you just want to prepare yourself so you know how to manage it when the time comes, I hope you find this video helpful!

While this is normal for new parents, in many cases thereโs actually nothing to worry about. We both know that as a new parent, thereโs already enough going on. The last thing you need to be doing is stressing about things that you donโt need to be concerned about.
So in this video, hopefully I can help put your mind at ease a little by walking you through five things that often cause new parents a lot of stress but don't have to.
I hope this helps!

These items can inadvertently make your babyโs food seem disgusting to them, make it extremely difficult for them to eat, cause excess gagging, and even delay oral motor development.
Switching them out can be the difference between really challenging mealtimes with your child, and mealtimes that are easy and enjoyable for everyone.
In this video, I walk through what these common feeding utensils are, why they aren't always the best option, and the alternatives I recommend instead.

The truth is, most babies don't need expensive toys to keep them entertained. If you've ever given a baby a gift, you've probably experienced this first hand... Often they're more interested in the wrapping than the actual toy inside ๐.
These 10 baby games are some of my favourites because they also only take a few minutes to set up. Perfect if you're looking for some age-appropriate, quick, fun activities to do with your little one without going out and spending more money on new toys.
As always. I hope you find this helpful!

It might seem intuitive (and you may find yourself doing it without even knowing it already), but even if it is, hopefully this encourages you to do it even more often throughout the day.
It's known as 'serve and return' and is such a nice, natural way to interact with your little one it's incredible easy to do each and every day.
I hope you find this helpful!

Research shows that there is one thing you can easily add to your family's daily habits that can very quickly improve multiple aspects of your baby's sleep.
2 separate studies show that doing this helps babies fall asleep faster, fall asleep earlier (earlier bed times), wake less often during the night, and have increased sleep duration.
While I can't say this will work for every family (we know there are no certainties with these things), it's so easy to do, I think it's definitely worth trying with your baby.
I hope it helps!

Settling your baby to sleep for naps or bed time is a common struggle so many parents face. There are lots of helpful tools out there that can make it easier - one of which is wake windows.
While I do think wake windows are a handy resource, they're just one piece of a much larger puzzle when it comes to knowing when your baby is ready for a nap. Unfortunately, trying to stick to strict wake windows without understanding that they are just one component of great naps and night time sleep can cause extra stress, rather than making the process easier.
In this video you'll learn how to get your baby to fall asleep easier by combining wake windows with 2 other essential components that are needed for your baby to fall asleep and enjoy a full nap or night sleep.
I really hope this helps!

However, this doesn't teach them how their actions affect others. They also need guidance on how to fix things, as this is a skill that takes practice.

This extremely popular sleep aid does appear to help with baby sleep. But when used incorrectly, it can lead to long-term and even permanent hearing loss.
White noise for babies work for many to help them fall asleep faster and reduce night waking. It's a useful tool and I do recommend it. However, both the volume and duration of exposure need to be considered to ensure your little one's ears aren't accidentally damaged while using white noise.
Because of how long their ears are exposed to white noise, it doesn't have to be what we would often consider loud in order to be harmful to their hearing.
In this video, you'll learn how to use white noise safely and how to test to see if you have your white noise machine set up in a way that's optimal for your baby.

But our children don't naturally know how to play by themselves. They need to first have an environment that supports independent play, and then they need us to teach them how to do it. Once they get started, they will continue to learn and explore, but most need that little bit of help to start.
In this video you'll learn the strategies we use as Occupational Therapists to teach young children the skill of independent play. Once they've got this skill, you'll be able to get that all important time to yourself to get things done around the house, or just take a moment for yourself, without relying on screens if you don't want to.

Doing this daily can help reduce the risk of your baby developing a range of problems such as positional plagiocephaly and torticollis. Often by the time these conditions become noticeable, they already require intervention to resolve, so it's obviously a much better outcome if you can avoid them altogether.
While positional plagiocephaly and positional torticollis can't always be avoided, there are things you can do to help reduce the likelihood of them becoming an issue. Implementing the steps in this video is one way you can do that.
I hope this helps!

When this starts, itt's easy to fall into the trap of teaching them that screaming is the way to get you do quickly do whatever they want. Rather than learning to develop more sophisticated communication skills, they fall into a pattern of just screaming whenever they have a want or need.
In this video I'll share how you can avoid this common pitfall, and how you can encourage your little one to continue developing those all important communication skills beyond the scream.
As always, I hope it helps!

In this video, Physiotherapist Meghan Stephenson shares her best tips for pregnant women to modify the way you do many common daily activities to help minimise the risk of experiencing post-birth urinary incontinence, abdominal separation, prolapse, back pain, and ongoing pelvic pain.
These changes can help protect your abdominals and pelvic floor, along with your back and hips.
While this certainly doesn't guarantee that you won't experience any issues post-birth, it can help you reduce the likelihood and severity of these common conditions.

Now, I'm definitely not saying to never help your baby! There's definitely nuance here. But by deciding when to help, and when to take a step back and give your baby time and space rather than jumping in on a whim, you're doing what's most beneficial for their development.
I hope this helps!

Often it all comes down to one foundational piece of the puzzle not being quite right. This can lead to kids not wanting to sit at the table to eat, refusing to try food, tantrums and meltdowns, and what seems like picky eating.
But when you get it right, mealtimes become so much easier. Even if it feels like you've tried everything and none of it works, this one change might be all you need.
I hope this helps!

The truth is, this is perfectly normal. What we want to avoid when this happens is turning a mild regression into a more serious issue that is ongoing and difficult to resolve.
This video will walk you through how to respond when a toileting regression occurs to make sure your child gets back to using the toilet successfully as soon as possible.
I hope this helps!

A common reaction (especially if you're out in public), is to quickly tell your child to stop doing what they're doing, and tell them not to do it again. You might even feel some embarrassment yourself depending on the situation.
Unfortunately, even though it's not intentional, this can often make toddlers feel ashamed and like they've done something wrong.
But these behaviours are actually perfectly normal, and something every child will do as they develop. That means it's important to respond in a way that doesn't make them feel like they're doing something shameful or wrong.
In this video you'll learn how to respond to these situations in ways that won't cause embarrassment, shame or guilt.

But a fascinating study revealed that the way we praise our children can have a huge impact on their long term confidence and outcomes in academic and other areas of life.
In this video I'll walk you through the different ways in which we can compliment and praise children, and how these different approaches impact our little ones. Then we'll look at what appears to be a much more effective way to praise and encourage children based on the recent research.

Selecting age-appropriate toys helps facilitate healthy gross motor and fine motor development. When the toys are age-appropriate, they're also more fun for children because they can actually use them, and they provide stimulation and challenges that are suitable for their current stage of development.
At 9-12 months of age there are some big changes in your baby's development that mean it's time for a little toy box upgrade to really help the development of their fine motor skills. In this video you'll learn which toys to swap out, and the best toys for 9-12 month old babies. And don't worry, these aren't super expensive options either!

If your little one isn't tired, hungry or in need of a nappy (diaper) change, here are 3 other causes of crying in newborns, and how to know which one is causing your baby's distress. Most importantly, you'll learn how to differentiate between them to help avoid mistaking one cause of crying for something completely different, like assuming it's just purple crying when your little one has an underlying problem causing them to be in pain.

Punishment (whether it's taking away privileges, yelling, cancelling activities, or many other examples) is a really common tool used to try to put an end to undesired behaviour and teach children how they should behave in the future.
But what research shows us that punishment doesn't actually work for toddlers. In this video you'll learn why it doesn't work for young children, and what you can do instead that's much more effective.
This isn't about judgement (most of us have used some form of punishment at some point). It's simply about presenting a more effective way to teach your child appropriate behaviour that I think many parents will find helpful!

Selecting age-appropriate toys helps facilitate healthy gross motor and fine motor development. When the toys are age-appropriate, they're also more fun for children because they can actually use them, and they provide stimulation and challenges that are suitable for their current stage of development.
At 6-9 months of age there are some big changes in your baby's development that mean it's time for a little toy box upgrade to really help the development of their fine motor skills. In this video you'll learn which toys to swap out, and the best toys for 6-9 month old babies. And don't worry, these aren't super expensive options either!

This video walks you through what I wish all parents new about developmental milestones - why they're important, when they're useful (and when they're not), and how to use them in a way that's actually helpful.
Hopefully after watching this one it helps you look at developmental milestones a little differently, and more importantly, helps alleviate some of that unnecessary concern if it's something you've experienced.
